- Our third stop on our Moroccan summer adventure was Imsouane.
The small village of Imsouane is located on the coast of Morocco. The Berber name of the village literally means “the drinking mouth”, the Bay drinking in the swell from the wild Atlantic Ocean.
A highlight of the drive from Essaouira to Imsouane, was witnessing the goats eating from the Argan trees. Often described as a natural phenomenon unique to the North African nation, their climbing is instinctual to an extent: The goats are attracted to the fruit in argan trees and, agile as they are, will climb up the branches to reach the pulpy treats.
Imsouane is the favorite destination for many tourists, this is due to its breathtaking scenery as well as the calmness, tranquility and perfect waves for surfing.
Imsouane is growing in popularity every year with more hostels, restaurants and surf shops opening all the time. The village still retains its laidback and authentic charm - which some visitors liken to the Taghazout in the 60's and 70's.
Imsouane Magic Bay, (where we stayed), is the most popular surf spot in the area. The sandy beach makes it a friendly option for beginners.
Rides can run for up to 600 meters when the conditions are perfect, making it one of the longest waves in all of Africa.
The best time to surf in Morocco is between late September and April. Although Imsouane is known for having good conditions for surfing throughout the year. We were lucky to catch a few summer waves.
Just 1.5 hours from Essaouira this chill little surf town is a destination worth visiting.
