"Two girls on a ship full of homosexuals." I love it.
Yup!
Yes!!!
Bahahahahahahahahahahaaa! Yes!
Gotta love Jane Russell. Incredibly gorgeous, and from all I've read a genuinely loving, down-to-earth human being. RIP, Jane...
Great lady!
always came off as a wise and was a great gal and I loved her with macho leading men like Ckark Gable and Robert Mitchum. She also had terrific comic timing.
True story here - This is one of my favorite movies of all time and when offered as a free option for an overseas flight I punched it up for a comfort re-watch. At the scene, "Is There Anyone Here For Love," a German guy sitting next to me glanced at the screen and screamed in terror, "Shes watching gay porn!" Laughingly, I had to explain this movie. He'd never heard of it, but did know who Marilyn Monroe was. I'm not sure he believed me when I told him this was a beloved classic. Good Times.
LOL! That is hilarious! Thank you for sharing it ! See? I'm not the only one! Have a lovely holiday season and thanks for watching! best Wishes; Steve
The technicolor on this film is so vivid it will give you cataracts.
Fabulous!
Love the scene where Marilyn is stuck in a porthole and little George WInslow comes to her rescue. Comic gold.
" You've got alot of animal magnetism." Hilarious!
Great review of one of my all-time favorites. Marilyn was at her stunning peak, and the chemistry with Jane Russell is great. My favorite scene in the movie is in the dining when she first learned about tiaras. She said, "I just love finding new places to wear diamonds!".
She's so innocent and knows exactly what she's doing.
Steve you did such a fantastic review here..I am Jodi Fritz, Joe Franklin's widow..Joe wrote the first book on Marilyn...and Jane Russell was on his talk show---Joe invented the talk show --- this is a lot of fun.
THANK YOU
Dear Jodi; I had the honor of being a guest performer on "The Joe Franklin Show" as a comedian in my early days. The other guest was Karen Black. How lovely to hear from you. Being on The Joe Franklin Show is a terasured memory. Thank you for your kind words and for being in touch. My Very Best; Steve
Yes! My all time favorite MM movie! This is Marilyn in her very best, most magical, charismatic, vivacious performance of her career. It really showcased MM's great comic chops, as she plays the quintessential "dumb blonde", who's secretly smarter than most of the men around her. The costume design was gorgeous, the music was catchy and fun--I just can't get over how good this movie is, and it certainly stands the test of time! It's still so quotable. I FORCED my boyfriend to watch it so he'd understand why I always say, in my best Marilyn-esque baby voice, "I won't be in love with a man who won't trust me, no matter what I might do!"
Thank you for doing Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (though the title had nothing to do with the plot of the movie). It's such a classic.
Other great dialogue:
Boyfriend's Father: Have you really got the nerve to tell me you don't want to marry my son for his money?
Marilyn: No, I want to marry him for YOUR money.
No question, it's fabulous!
This is one of the best...they just don't make em like this anymore & besides they just don't have those fabulous actresses. I just adore Steve's reviews and tell all my friends (here in Australia) to watch them. They certainly were the Golden Years of Hollywood!!!
Kudos also to George Chakiris in the Diamonds chorus
Steve, I love this one too. The first number is one of my favorites. Even though it's interrupted by the credits thank God they return to the number and finish it. I think Jane and Marilyn are a wonderful pair and seem to make each other better by the contrast of their different personalities. They never looked better in extremely vivid technicolor (just as color enhances Marilyn in Niagara). I love the scene with Marilyn, little George "Foghorn" and Charles Coburn when she gets stuck in a porthole and little guy helps her with the aid of a deck chair blanket to fool Coburn into thinking she's just out for a little air instead of being stuck after searching for incriminating photos.
As always your impressions are spot on. Bravo.
I love this one two, You can tell they really liked each other. I love th scene with George Winslow at the table with Jane Russell.. " I'm old enough to know a good looking girl when I see one, personally, I don't intend to miss a meal!" Hilarious! Happy Holidays! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Great memories. Steve, Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy New Year!
GPB is a jaunty, brassy, colorful treat ... and that talented little boy George Winslow is part of what makes the movie such a delight. He is absolutely hilarious whenever he appears. The port hole scene is highly memorable.
Should be mentioned that Marilyn does her own singing in all her films.
Somebody posted that Marni Nixon was hired to clean up some of MM's high notes. Whatever. Marilyn's voice was part of the whole astounding MM package. She may have been emotionally destroyed by afternoons on the casting couch w/shriveled up old Joe Schenck to "earn" this role, but her performance is incandescent and eternal.
Like Bette Davis in "All About Eve", Marilyn was born to play Lorelei Lee. Nobody, but nobody else could have looked as she did in "Diamonds".
Major, major props to choreographer Jack Cole. Brilliant work.
When I was a child I used to come home from school and watch movies on TV. I remember "Seven Year Itch", "How To Marry A Millionaire" & "Blondes". I fell in love with Marilyn Monroe because I thought she was hysterically funny. I can watch her talk to Piggy in this movie and still crack up at how she delivers lines like, "I just love finding new places to wear diamonds." No matter what anybody says, she was a great comedienne.
All Marni did were those operatic high notes.
esquibelle w
Thanks for watching!
Yes. I read that those high pitch vocals were done by a voice over.
Your enthusiasm and knowledge for these old classic films are just so fun to listen to.
Thank you so much! Take care and keep watching! Best Wishes; Steve
My favorite movie...my favorite line in the movie...Jane to Piggy's wife..."if you're so serious why are you wearing that hat ? "
Thank you Steve....wonderful as usual !
Thank You!
Choreographer Jack Cole taught Gwen Verdon her moves, Buzz Miller -- and influenced Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse etc. Yes, he was Very Important.
I just watched him in Minnelli's "Designing Woman", where he has a big role as the eccentric choreographer, who is teased for being efeminate and proves tougher than any other character. Fabulous! Thanks for watching> Steve
Cole was also Rita Hayworth's choreographer at Columbia in the 1940s..
I first saw you in "Trick" and absolutely adored your character! I'm so glad I found your channel. I really enjoy your insights and intros :)
Oh boy, it's streaming on Netflix! Thank you Steve. You are always brilliant but this is one of your best reviews yet. Can't wait to see more of that kid--he's adorable.
He's amazing!
“They weren’t really dancers, but they can move well” big mood.
You ain't kiddin'! Gorgeous! Thanks to briliant staging by their buddy JACK COLE! Fabulosa!
I learned how to shimmy by watching this movie 😉
Well, someobidy had to teach you! LOl!
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as opposed to Non-Gentlemen who prefer brunettes. lol These movies are all time classic, fun and just filled with the stuff dreams are made of. Fun review Steve...I gotta watch it all over again.
I've been intrigued and fascinated by MM since I was in junior high, have seen many of her films but really wouldn't watch most of them a second time. This one I'd see again; I like the confident self-assured character she played and the "Diamonds..." number is brilliant and I don't mean just the colors! Marilyn seemed to be having a great time.
She felt safe under the eye of choreographer/ confidante Jack Cole. Thanks for watching & Happy New Year! Steve
Am I the only one who loves Hoagy Carmichael's song 'When Love Goes Wrong'?
I do! OXOX
"Cra-zee, Mademoiselle"!
Wonderful song, yes, but the "dance"! It's the shoulder-shimmyingest number in the show! So wonderfully burlesque~ Love it!
Absolutely fantastic! I am so glad I found YOU [this}. You're utterly delightful and this is the first one I have seen!
Im so glad you like them!
Yes, what a fun movie. One of my favorites with Marilyn and the cast. ♥
Everyone's having such a good time! Glad you did too! Steve
In, "Is There Anyone for Love," I love how the guys are all expressionless during the whole number but after Jane Russell is knocked into the swimming pool and ends the number soaking wet, they are all smiling.
That's because their physiques were already stealing enough focus. LOL! Steve
The documentary THE CELLULOID CLOSET mentions the number's gay subtext. (Though I'm straight, I was tipped off by the Greek soldier painted on the wall!)
Steve you have just made my day fabulous fun and informative review as always thank you, must dig out the DVD for tonight
Good idea!
Oh my goddd - YOUR BEST ONE (well so far)!! I'm sitting here in the kitchen eating a peanut butter sangwich at 1AM crackingthefukkup!!
Hooray! TOQ loves peanut butter and you too!
I just discovered this channel and it seems absolutely unique, adorable and fun! So charming 💕
Greetings from Argentina and I hope the pandemic has not affected you, you definitely have a new subscriber, Queen
Greetings Ignacio!! Welcome aboard! I'm so delighted to have someone watching from Argentina! Thank you, so very much! I am SAFE and I hope you are too! Big Hugs from the Tired Old Queen at the Movies1' OXOX Steve
Fabulously entertaining - thanks so much for posting! I shall plough through all your other vids now :)
lol Not only that, but it is both so gay/camp, and such a buddy movie, that did you notice at the rom-com double wedding ending, Marilyn and Jane walk down the aisle WITH EACH OTHER! The guys are so peripheral (except the yummy one Steve mentions who's in the front of all the "ANyone Here For Love" shots ;))) One of my all-time Top 10 films, thanks TOQ!
We aim to please! So glad you liked it! It's a camp fest if ever there was one! best Wishes and Happy New Year! Steve
As an NYC tour guide I would explain to tourists the The Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women in Brooklyn by quoting some lines from the movie:
Esmond Sr., "Have you got the nerve to tell me you don't want to marry my son for his money?"
Lorelei Lee, "It's true."
Esmond Sr., "Then what do you want to marry him for?"
Lorelei Lee, "I want to marry him for YOUR money."
Lorelei: Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?
Esmond Sr.: Say, they told me you were stupid! You certainly don't seem stupid to me!
Lorelei: I can be smart when it's important, but most men don't like it.
A school of math and science just for young women so they can be smart and not worry about hurting the feelings of young men.
Ain’ t There Anyone Here For Love is a scene that’s a lot more revealing if you watch it most carefully.I had whooping cough and watched GPB many, many times. Those speedos show a lot when the guys are working out. A lot of gapping is going on, not that I was looking, but after 5-6 viewings you notice. Okay so I looked.
Who doesn't? Nothing like a room with a view! OXOX Steve
Some of the sets for this film were also used in "Titanic" and "Dangerous Crossing". A famous MM portrait shows here with hands on hips, wearing a gold lame gown. It was worn in this film but the scene was deleted because, as I recall, the gown was too revealing. The ocean liner shown in GPB was the Titanic but with only 3 instead of 4 smokestacks. I also saw the ship in the 1975 (?) TV movie "Last Survivors" starring Martin Sheen.
Good spotting!
"You'll hurt yourself" is a comic take on Jane's line to Jack Buetel in The Outlaw a decade prior (when he's about to shock the censors by making advances to her while in bed after a gunshot wound).
That's exactly where I use it! LOL! Thanks for watching! Steve
OMG! you are so funny! You have them framed 😂🤣😂🤣 I love it !
I have too many framed...but alas...
Yay! Educate the kiddies! Seeing this film on the big screen, in technicolor will blow your mind for the rest of your life. Chills.
Do you guys have any tea/ clips of Mommie Dearest? My favorite movie ever! Great camp!! Thanks
Steve, Steve, Steve, I could listen to you all day talk about Hollywood and all of these fabulous stars. I binge watch your reviews. You are fantastic.
Congratulations! You just won my heart! Thanks SO much for watching! Don't forget to subscribe so that you'll be noticfied about fuure episodes and please take a moment to push the "LIKE" button. It really helps. Have a great day! Steve
2:09.....pre Trixie Mattel.. Love you Steve!
Thanks Steve...when I was a little guy...my older sister and I loved MM's movies...appreciate the insight into Jack Cole's connection with MM..I do think Marilyn was athletic ..just not a trained dance...but she sure could sing a song...I also appreciated Jane Russell...truly a grounded gal and who could hold her ground...the Olympic team pool number is 'eye catching' and love when JR is swept into the pool and continues the number...love your reviews...I share them with friends....hugs
Thanks so much! I hope you and they subscribe. I love bringing new people classic movies every month! Much appreciated!
Fun review of a wonderous movie. I always thought Tommy Noonan was adorable in this and very sexy in A Star is Born and never understood why his movie career didn't really go much further than this in A pictures.
Me neither. He was a hottie! Love 'em with glasses!
Steve, where have you been all my life?? Love all your reviews. Great work!!
I've been right around the corner! SO glad you are watching!
"You'll find, Miss Lee, that I mean business!"
"Oh yeah! The why are you wearing that hat?"
Well, it's an answer...
The best Hawks "Buddy film" ever: though this time the two buddies are Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. That's the gorgeous Ed Fury whose hair Jane rustles at the very end of "Aint There Anyone Here For Love" .
My favorite of the "Hawks Buddy Movies" is: "The Big Sky" with Kirk Doyglas and dreamy Dewey Martin. OXOX
Those flesh colored bathing suits changed my life when I was young. Nobody was more of a 'detective' than me, trying to see up the their legs and into their shorts. HAHA. Henry Spofford III kills me every time! "stop that!" hahaha
Wait...What Bathing suits!?! LOL! " I'm old enough to recognize a good looking girl when I see one. Personally, I don't plan to miss a meal." That goes for the athletes as well. Everybody out of the trinks and into the pool!!!
Loved this video, you're clearly so passionate about this and completely in love with everything you discuss in this video. So many little facts I didn't know before that I now know. You're so lovable! Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!
as a born marilyn fan WE LOVE ALL YOUR TINY MARILYN IMPRESSIONS in this household all three of us ! KEEP GOING ! ^^
Well thanks to all three and I certainly will!
One of my favorites. That little boy was fantastic. I read everyone in the film.
Little George " Foghorn" Winslow was certainly a gem! Thanks for watching! Steve
Whenever they had to move, guys picked them up!😂👍
Did Marilyn do her own singing?
I discovered your channel recently (or maybe RUclips suggested it), but I've been loving catching up on all your reviews. Hard to believe you've bern doing them for 10 years. 👍
12 years now. WHEW! Time flies. Yes, she did her own singing. She was also great friends with choreographer dancer Jack Cole, who knew exactly what her limitations were and handeled her accordingly. He always took good care of her and whenever the dancing got too tricky for her or whatever skin tight outfit, she was wearing, he would just have the guys pick her up and take her to the next location on the set. Then she'd sing a little, and they'd lift her up and whisk her off to another. When I watched her as a kid, it always seemid like she could fliy. I love her! Thanks for the lovely compliments and for watching. Steve
3:56 this scene caught me so off guard that i laughed for a good 5 minutes. it’s amazing.
YUP! It's fantabulous! Thanks for watching ! Steve
I love Marilyn and this is my fave movie of hers. I could watch it over and over. Great music and very funny. Iconic flick actually.
Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
George 'Foghorn' Winslow was interviewed later in life about working several days as the pint sized love interest of Marilyn. He said, I worked all day with this amazingly beautiful woman and at the end of the day she came out of her trailer and I didn't recognize her till she spoke.
I never heard this. So precious. Thanks a million! Steve
George Chikaris also had a bit part along side Rosemary Clooney in White Christmas 🎄
I love you Steve! You always give the best reviews! I so enjoy all the behind the scenes insights you give!
Thanks so much! So glad you like them! Steve
So much fun. Marilyn Monroe is brilliant in this, a pity she didn’t get more good comedy roles. Jane Russell is hilarious in the court scene.
This was such a marvelous behicle for both of them.,
I could honestly listen to another 2 hours of this
I'll give you another hour to cut that out! OXOX
3:37 Jane's line "Honey, you'll hurt yourself!" parodies one in The Outlaw' (released less than 10yr earlier) leading to likely but unfilmed lovemaking! Still in public memory then, I imagine.
LOL! As it should be. I've used it on occasion myself...nevermind. LOL! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Loved this movie, and if you look close, the scene where Jane Russell is doing that number with all those body builders from muscle beach, you can see a quick "ball slip" with one of those hunks. Those guys weren't wearing any underwear!
You say that like it's a bad thing! LOl! Thanks for watching..TOQ & "the Boys"!
This is the first movie I saw Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe in as a kid back in the sixties. They would broadcast it every few months in the New York area on WABC TV. It's my favorite for either lady. Both were at their peaks, and had great chemistry.
My favorite numbers both are with Jane. Is There Anyone Here for Love, and the courtroom scene in when she does her own rendition of Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend. Marilyn was great, but I always thought Jane gave it heart, a real dame.
Regarding Marilyn's tardiness, I heard Jane decided to take responsibility for Marilyn coming to the set. Every morning Marilyn would hear a rap on her dressing room door. "Are you ready, blondie?" And they would go to the set together.
Jane was a great lady!
Another of those "Diamonds" chorus boys is a young Robert Fuller, years before "Laramie" and "Energency!". True story- look it up!
Thanks sir! This time I will try to not mention the beautiful AD Gene doll. This movie is one of my favorite since I was a child. I remember seeing on French television on a Sunday afternoon back in… probably the mid 70s. It was all dubbed in French!!! Even the songs! That’s the day I swore I would always watch films in their original languages! Imagine: Diamonds are a girls best friend in French.. with the chorus voices in English (diamants… diamonds!!) the next day I bought the vinyl to be able to hear the real songs.
Thanks again for the great review and… love the Gene!!! I can’t help myself!
Hugs from Japan
GP
OMG! You're in Japan!?! I'm thrilled!!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful anecdote about seeing it in French and for complimenting my dolls. I love 'em! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ yes I’ve been living in Japan for 10 years now. Unfortunately most of doll collection is still in the uk… but I did manage to bring my DVD collection with me (and bought many here)
Will you review “My sister Eileen” someday please? I must admit it’s probably my favorite movie musical and I would love to hear what you think of it…
Hugs as always
GP
@@Frenchmisto I'll add it to my "To Do" list!
There HAS to be uncut (so-to-speak) film from this movie!!!
I've seen on set photos, but none of the outtakes.
Thanks TOQ great info :D
The only clip of this that I have ever seen is the one from Celluloid Closet. It looks like fun in a fabulous 50's sort of way.
It is!
Welcome back. Where have you been. Missed you two
In quarantine these days. Hope you are well and safe and thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
"The second reason is you've got a lot of animal magnetism."
That scene between Marilyn and the kid, when she's stuck, is priceless.
Priceless! Thanks for watching! Steve
I have This Film on DVD!!!! I Love it, Them...The Whole Story!!! I Probably Watch This at Least one time month!!! Thanks for Some Insight, TOQ!!!
What, are you trying to do, break the habit? Go back to twice a week, like the rest of us! LOl!
Great segment !!
Great music! Great costumes! Great cast... Love alllll of it. Thanks for the inside scoop.
Thanks for watching!
Tommy Noonan who played Lorelei's fiancé GPB would in the 1960's played Jayne Mansfield's husband in "Promises, Promises", another movie that takes place on an ocean liner.
Fabulous! Steve, you're the best! You summed up all my feelings about this film!
I love this one too and so smart of Hawks to pair the two. The really complimented each other, although the men all seemed gay to me. Mind you, I'm not complaining. LOL! Steve
I get a kick watching Jane in “Paleface” with Bob Hope, one of my favorite films.
Steve, I've watched this several times and I just love you!!!
Donald; I've read this several times and I love you too! Thanks so much for watching. Best Wishes and please stay SAFE! Steve
A great movie and one of Steve's best reviews.
Awww, thatnks!
0:45 George Chakiris on the far right with gray temples. He would later play Bernardo on _West Side Story_ .
Yup!
Yes!! More Steve Hayes!
"He...... he looka like a gay boy." ` Ms. Swan
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for doing thiis. Awesome to learn the back story of motion pictures
Total agreement...one of the "tragedies " of my childhood was not being able to buy the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes "paper doll book.
WHAT!?! There was a "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" papredoll book and I didn't know about it!?! I don't blame you! Boy, wait'll I get home! LOl!
Fabulous film.
loved this! thank you!
Thank you for watching! All My Very Best; Steve
No one ever talks about a production number called No talent Joe from a Betty Grable musical/comedy called Meet me after the Show in 1951,where Betty is surrounded by scandally glad muscle men. 2 years before this. Just thought I'd mention it.
"He had his fun doing it, didn't he?"
this makes me smile so much, love your energy ❤
Thanks for watching! Steve
I've seen it a million times and never thought Dorothy's dude was gay.
"Gentlemen Prefer Hunks"?
Great, Mr Hayes. Choreo Jack Cole was major. Influenced Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse.
LMAO...love this. However, my fave line of the whole movie doesn't belong to Marilyn. It's Jane's and one that I've lived my life by. "I like a man that can run faster than I can". LOL
LOL! I love that too. My favorite lines are by little George "Foghorn" Winslow; " I'm old enough to recognize a good looking girl when I see one. Frankly, I don't intend to miss a meal." Kills me every time! Steve
One of my favorite movies and one of my favorite reviews of yours. Really fun!
Thanks so much!
Jane doing her imitation of Marilyn in the court scene is delightful. Everything about this movie is wonderful, except Elliot Reid. He is such a drip, how could Jane's character fall for him?
They're all drips...except at the pool.
i love this ..ive seen this movie hundreds in my 60 years :) ..thanku for this and i agreeeeeeeeeeee :)
Hooray! Viva Marilyn and Jane!
Steve, you should review How To Marry a Millionaire!
I'm always excited to see a new video from you in my sub box!!
