That scene where she's willing to go in his place gets me every time. A film I will never get tired of watching.
An utterly stunning film - one of my all time favourites. I love introducing this film and watching it with someone for the first time. I have never known anyone to hate it. ❣
Same here.
Saw it first run , way back when 1947? Loved then and ever since. One of the great films.
A contender for best British film of all time.
A contender for sure, but I’d give a slight advantage to Colonel Blimp

One of my top five of the greatest films ever made! A timeless stunning MASTERPIECE!!!!!
I only discovered A Matter of Life and Death a few years ago. I regret not discovering this incredible film sooner.
Raymond Massey as the patriot was amazing.
I watched this yesterday.. It is quintessentially British and I think it is BRILLIANT... The acting is superb and all the charatures are fabulous.
A truly outstanding film. As with a Powell and Pressburger film, full of lush colours, great script full of intelligence and humour, a brilliant cast, awesome sets and a style and panache that stamps their personal mark on British cinema. One of my favourite films. Always a joy to watch.
The local PBS station out of Philadelphia, WHYY, Channel 12, would reliably broadcast this movie and The Red Shoes during their fundraisers. The station's resident film expert/critic, Patrick Stoner, referred to Marius Goring's character as "The Heavenly Messenger" that struck me just right from the beginning which was most likely sometime in the early-'80s. I associate A Matter of Life and Death along with The Red Shoes with cozy, rainy weekend days and on occasion a fire going in the hearth.
One of my favourite lines, "' 'ave I told you about my operation?" running a finger across the place where the guillotine came down.

This is a wonderful film, definitely one of "The Archers" best.
I watched this film just about a month ago. Someone picked it out of the Criterion closet. I had never heard of it. I loved it.
My obsession, since I was a kid, was and is Conductor 71. I even made a video showing just only Marius Goring' scenes. One must also appreciate the music.
Mark, I often disagree with your reviews of new films, but you got this one 100% correct. Great review.
Truly a film that is summed up by the phase 'they don't make them like that anymore' in the best possible way.
2020: we are all radio operators.
One of my personal favorites of the Archers. (I think my favorite being The Red Shoes.)
I saw this as a small child and was totally mesmerised. Wonder full✨
When I was a small child, I was equally mesmerised by their first film: "The Silver Fleet". Have been terrified of submarines ever since.
I have this on DVD....one of my faves :) true classic
This movie is in my personal Top 5.
Highly, highly recommended: The memoir, "A Life In Movies," by Michael Powell (director of A Matter of Life and Death) [1905-1990]; Alfred A. Knopf [William Heinemann Ltd London 1986]) (1986 hardcover).
Spot on. I love this film. Thanks for the review.
It really is that good.
In the unlikelihood you'd need to learn how to live and how to die in just five minutes, have them watch the beginning of this masterpiece.
I spent years not knowing how the story sta, in the 70s sometimes tv was not my friend... But once I got a chance to s the whole film... I was so rewarded! It is a marvelous story and a wonderful filmic film!
A filmic film, indeed.
One of my favorite films. Seen it many times. Due to the knowledge of the spirit world in that day, the spirit world is actually far more colorful than this world, and love is far more powerful than the law, because love goes beyond time and space, past and present. I'm already in the middle of seeing the film again.
I love this movie my favorite from Michigan 2021 JJJ
Great film although I didn't like the courtroom bit at the end where they debate whether America or Britain is better. Didn't seem to fit with the rest of the film and was quiet tedious.
I love this film, but for me one of the few misfires is June the "American" having a cut glass British accent. You'd think they would have avoided that.
It is heaven court room scenes there are No Germans or Japanese seated in the audience.
Anyone know why not? ....
Raelspark because it was a propaganda film and not a documentary. we were the the good guys and they were the bad guys. showing the enemy in heaven would counterproductive. it is still a good film.
Raelspark the judge said that people with ties to the case will be seated up front. hardly a matter of propaganda as the Archers had a couple of years earlier made the Life and Death of Colonel Blimp where the main character is best friends with a German
and there is Asians on the jury
Chinese, not Japanese
clearly, no Nazis in Heaven.
Enjoyed it until the court scene at the end which was so boring.
I love the cinematography and art direction, but the screenplay is a terrible hodgepodge and the trial section, which has pretty much nothing to do with the rest of the film, is just hugely tedious and pretentious. Altogether rather disappointing.
