Orson Welles in the doorway. He does a better job acting with his facial expressions in this scene than most actors can pull off in a spoken segment. Outstanding movie in everyway.

I try to watch this at least once a year. In the last 3 years, I have started going to Vienna to watch it in the Burg Kino. There is something very special about seeing this movie in the city where it was shot. It makes the movie even more special for me.

Superb movie. One of the strongest emotional scenes in a hospital's children's ward is achieved without showing a single suffering child; only the nurses attending those in the beds and the discarded toy of one of the children who didn't make it.
there is a small arthouse cinema in vienna [Burg Kino Opernring 19] which shows this film every day. i did a guided tour of the filming locations then saw the film (yet again) in the small movie theatre. brilliant day
The epitome of "Film Noir". I can't think of post WW Two Europe without scenes of this movie coming to me. In my mind it is always linked to another Orson Wells movie "The Stranger". Another post WW Two thriller where Wells plays the bad guy being hunted down. But the the setting is the opposite of a demolished Vienna. Instead it's a quaint idyllic New England town out of a Norman Rockwell painting- home to a prestigious prep school for the sons of America's oldest and most powerful families.
eric blair Odd Man Out is very good, as is The Fallen Idol and Our Man in Havana. But I think that The Third Man is my favorite film of all-time. So it must be Carol Reed’s best film, ha ha.

Graham Greene was a close friend of Kim Philby, and based Lime’s charming crook persona on Philby. In “The Ipcress File” the villain’s name is Ken Dalby.

i watch it like 2 days ago , it was a good film , but i didn't like it that much , the thing is i love the final part of the movie more than the first 2/3 of it , there is a twist after that the movie turn great , all of the stuff before it didn't click for me at all
I do love Welles' line about Switzerland, though the "brotherly love" should be regarded as tempered by the reality that many Swiss men served abroad as mercenaries. They still provide the Pope's personal guard.
Yrs ago, I had a Prof who had been in the Swiss army in WW2, and SAW ACTION. The German occupation commander of a town on the French-Swiss border was going to burn the French half as reprisal. The Swiss unit fought, captured & occupied the town, until Berlin sent a more reasonable cmdr. Don't confuse Swiss for sissies!

Lawrence of Arabia is a very good movie. One of the best movies to come out at that time. The Third Man is possibly the greatest movie ever. That is the difference between the two.

Easy Jake ... Welles was also a director, & was used to getting his way, even as an actor. After shooting 1 scene in the sewer, he refused to go back in there. They had to build a set for him at Shepperton!
I dont think its a british film in its foundation. The creator and major influence, visually and dramatically is clearly Welles. Reed never used those angles and never had that inspiration in any of his other films, though some were good, and he was a good director in his own right. He wasnt a genius though, like Welles
@Juan Altredo. It is a British film my friend. Graham Greene wrote it and Carol Reed directed. Robert Krasker was Australian and did the lighting and cinemaphotography. It's a very quirky movie and hence deeply British.

Hate to say it but I did not like this film. I felt the pacing dragged, I didn’t root for any characters, the damn theme song over and over hurt my ears and completely ruined any suspenseful theme the movie was going for... I really don’t get the hype.

No argument regarding the greatness of The Third Man but Reed's earlier, Odd Man Out (1947) with James Mason may well be it's equal.

You can root for Callahan, sorry, Calloway, and his subordinate Sergeant Paine. The only truly decent characters in the film.
