    How do I get tested for this? I don’t see my gut specialist until next month but he says he wants to do a colonoscopy. I don’t think he understands that taking antibiotics has caused me all these problems

    • @DrShelleyMeyer
      @DrShelleyMeyer  2 года назад

      Yes, they always seem to start with a colonoscopy, which can be good to rule out the bad stuff, but to diagnoses leaky gut a stool test is needed: zonulin, and a microbiome test are recommended as a start. This is usually done through a functional medicine provider or alternative healthcare provider.

    Hi Shelley, I got leaky gut. Besides that I got histamine-intolerance and candida overgrowth. Does FODMAP and low histamine diet works for this? Tried FODMAP 4 times. It worked maybe 2 times for a short time. For the candida overgrowth I do use Sacharomyces Boulardii

      The low fodmap diet and anticandida diet can be helpful but aren't typically long term solutions. I recommend them while treating with targeted supplements or medications when needed.

    I met with a functional doc today. And while it was comforting to feel seen from a more individual holistic perspective. But, it was also overwhelming. I felt like there may be so many issues with me that its unfixable:(.

    2 years in healing my leaky gut post 17 years of being on HBC pills. It’s been hell. I’m working with a functional doctor but not much is helping. I switched doctors and i think this will help. The first one had me on about 14 supplements and it was hard for me. We corrected low hormones and vitamin deficiencies but still my acne is here. That’s my main awful symptom. It’s debilitating at times. My digestion is also poor and I need HCL and enzymes to eat. I have so much food intolerances so I have cut those out again. Sometimes i have hope but the cost I have spent on my health has been stressful as well especially when nothing seems to work.
    I heard on another channel, the reason people struggle to heal their leaky gut is because the liver is taking extra hits due to the issues leaky gut is causing. So all the vitamins and nutrients can’t heal the gut because they are being used my liver. The key is to remove gut infections and seal the junctions and focus on liver detox first, apparently. Then add in probiotics and vitamins. Thoughts?

      I am so sorry this has caused you so much suffering and I hope your work with your new provider has been helpful over the last couple months. The liver does need to be able to detox well in order to process anything- including a complicated supplement regimen. I have not found though that the liver needs to be addressed first, but it is something that can be addressed if working on the gut and liver together do not provide relief. Everyone is different so it's hard to provide one path that works for everyone. A good test to look at support for the liver and detox markers is the Nutreval by Genova, and also Great Plains Labs has many tests that can look at toxins that can disrupt liver function, if you find your liver is struggling. I hope that is helpful

      @@DrShelleyMeyer Thank you! My new doctor found I have hydrogen dominant SIBO and potentially PCOS. Starting antibiotic and herbal treatment and I will definitely ask my new doctor about these tests! My skin is just horrendous and I know so many others who have had SIBO and/or PCOS and they did not have horrendous skin so I often wonder if my liver is struggling. Thank you again for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it!!

    I began to suspect I may have a leaky gut due to my body's reaction to food. Practically eating anything in the morning can give me crazy fatigue. Bread, cheese, meat, anything with sugar I'll be napping for 2 hours. The only thing that doesn't cause me crazy fatigue is hard boiled eggs and even with them I still feel a minor sense of fatigue. Before covid it was not this bad but after covid I went through a lot of trauma and stress with my health and family. Ever since then I started to gain weight rapidly and seems my metabolism had slowed down drastically. Hard time losing weight. Basically nothing in the morning gives me energy except not eating. I've had a mild form of lupus for a long time now but I think it could be linked to leaky gut

    I have histamine intolerance. Is that caused by a leaky gut ?

    • @DrShelleyMeyer
      @DrShelleyMeyer  2 года назад +1

      A leaky gut can definitely cause histamine intolerance so working on repairing a leaky gut while following a low histamine diet can then make it easier later to tolerate some high histamine foods (for most people but this diagnosis can be complicated).

    Thanks for the Shelley, this is something I've been looking into a lot as I think it's been the cause of my psoriasis flare up

    • @DrShelleyMeyer
      @DrShelleyMeyer  2 года назад +2

      Yes, it can be at the root of even psoriasis. Best to fix the gut first, then see where the skin is and fine-tune it from there. I hope this info is helpful!

    Thank you for this video! I was diagnosed with Leaky Gut 4 years ago and am still having problems despite working with a naturopath. There was a point where I felt really good and possibly got rid of it but I had a baby, am still breastfeeding and have had trouble eating enough clean foods and have had to rely on grains to help. I have had some sugar too. I'm working on healing my gut again but I have a question about the emotional aspect. How does one know if they have trauma that is trapped in their body? I have tried talking with a therapist, Body Talk, Reflexology foot zoning, Chiropractic Neurology, and am currently a part of a life coaching program to help me mentally. At what point would I need EMDR or something similar?

    • @DrShelleyMeyer
      @DrShelleyMeyer  2 года назад +1

      Great question and it sounds like you are working really hard on healing your gut so I applaud you for this. If you have had significant trauma but have not worked with anyone directly on this then I recommend pursuing EMDR. If you feel you have worked through any past traumas then you might not need it. Hope this helps!

    Hi! I have gut motility issues/leaky gut. It causes cholinergic uriticaria something extremely painful. Something targeting receptors preventing response to acetylcholine causing excess acetylcholine.

    • @DrShelleyMeyer
      @DrShelleyMeyer  2 года назад

      No it's not very common and the work up and solution can vary and is complicated so it's best you work with a functional medicine provider to help figure this out as it will likely take time and testing.

    Hi Shelby I wanted to know are functional medicines safe during pregnancy. I am new to this medicine and I am 16 weeks pregnant. In the first trimester of my pregnancy I had lots of antibiotics due to Hpylori and 3 months before that I had covid and my body is completely weak now and I have joints titling now with severe headaches like head nerve pinching and all the joint pains full day. I feel like my left jaw all the teeth are tilting. I want to try functional medicine but I am not sure is it good at this time. I want to heal but I am pregnant and not sure what to do. I have three teeth problem as well in the left jaw and I am scared of root canal at this time. So much confusion. Do you suggest me to go with functional medicine

    • @DrShelleyMeyer
      @DrShelleyMeyer  2 года назад

      I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. Yes functional medicine is root cause medicine so it can definitely help but in pregnancy certain supplements can't be proven safe so it does limit your providers choices when it comes to supplements to help. But we can still help when you are pregnant.

    Ia m going through hell and can't sleep most night cause of the pains, I took antibiotics for h.pylori and my life changed ever since,prior to that I never had digestive issues ..now everything makes me bloat and gassy,it builds up all through the day and my intestines feels like it's being pulled from inside and it seems like my intestines and stomach are moving inside me due to gas 24/7,I pass out gas all through the night and still by morning there is still more moving inside me...I did a bottle of betaine HCl and didn't get better also didn't burn me or did anything obvious till I finished the whole bottle,same with digestive enzymes. So confuse

      I am so sorry you are suffering like this. It may be helpful to do more repair of your gut as the video reviews, and also check out my h pylori video as there are ideas there too.
