  • A young girl who loves to dance and is ready to marry chooses a log driver over his more well-to-do, land-loving competition. Driving logs down the river has made him the best dancing partner to be found. This lighthearted, animated tale is based on the song The Log Driver's Waltz by Wade Hemsworth. Kate and Anna McGarrigle sing to the music of the Mountain City Four.
    For ages 9 - 11
    Directed by John Weldon - 1979 | 3 min

I remember this fondly for a few reasons. First like a LOT of Canadians, I saw this all the time growing up. Like, daily. Second (and way more fun) I once went to a "Quintessentially Canadian Wedding". The food was great. Build your own Poutine Bar, Blueberry Grunts with Maple Ice Cream...etc. But the Couples first dance, was to this song. With the animation projected behind. It was probably the hardest I've heard a wedding crowd ever laugh.

I remember it always playing at the end of the broadcast day, 2am in the morning, LOL. It would play just before 'Oh Canada' and the test pattern. I was lucky enough to have my own cheapass B/W TV in my bedroom as a kid and would catch 'Dr. Who' every weeknight, no matter how bad it messed my sleep up for school the next day. 🙂

i came to Canada in March of 1989 and I arrived at 6ish in the morning when TVO was just opening for service. When I was a kid, my mom would turn the volume up on the TV when this song came on. I'd rush to the living room from whatever place I was in the house to sing along with it.

This, The Sweater, and The Cat Came Back are iconic memories of my childhood in the 1970 and 80s. Even years later, I am sure that 'The Log Driver's Waltz' closed out every night of broadcasting (after Doctor Who) at 2 (or 3?) am before O Canada played and the CBC went off the air for the night. Times surely have changed, but this video is eternal.

I have watched Beavis and Butthead before, and when I watch this, I like to picture what Beavis and Butthead would say to it. Probably something along the lines of:
(Logo of spinning thing at the beginning)
(Beavis makes noises of feeling dizzy. The thing stops.)
    Beavis: That was pretty cool!
    (Video starts)
Beavis: Why are these guys walking on longs?
Butthead: Because they are in the middle of the river, and they will fall.
Beavis: He has a stick. Sticks are cool!
    (Animated guy)
Beavis: Now he is a cartoon. This is cool. He's like going down a cartoon river dancing on a log.
    (brown-haired lady is seen)
Butthead: Whoa! There's a chick in this video.
    (Guy passes the moose)
Beavis: Hey, there's a moose. Mooses are cool! What is that dancing on the log with him?
Butthead: I think it's like, a giant rat, or a beaver, or something.
    (Doctors, Merchants and Lawyers)
Butthead: Hey, there are her parents.
Beavis: Hey, she's dancing with a guy in a suit. Suits suck!
Butthead: He fell. That was pretty cool.
Beavis: Hey, there's the log driver again.
Butthead: She turned into a stick.
    (guys fall off the log)
Beavis: These guys are falling off the logs.
    Butthead: Yeah. They're stupid.
Beavis: Yeah. Log drivers are cool!
    (married on a log)
Butthead: hey, check it out. That chick is marrying that log driver dude.
Beavis: Yeah. And they are doing it all without falling off the log.
    Butthead: That video was cool.

Somehow I suspect these lyrics are a metaphor for sex. Log driving = rutting in and out, step lightly = the physical act outside of rutting, white water = sexual fluids, "pleases the girls completely" = self explanatory... or am I completely off-base?

You guys are the National Film Board of Canada, and you've got spelling errors in your lyrics on the video! It's birling, not burling. It comes from an old Scottish word, birl, which means to revolve or cause to revolve. Seriously, my tax dollars pay for this poor quality work. SMH :/

It's my view that spelling mistakes like this often come from people not caring, a laziness.. When I first heard birling, I thought of burling, because I already knew curling. I looked it up, and within 5 minutes I knew the word was birling, and knew what it meant and where it came from. Someone there didn't bother to even ask if the word they were typing (burling) was even a real word. They'd never seen it before, and yet didn't even question it. Also, it's not a small spelling error. It's not a typo saying wltz instead of waltz. It's a word that doesn't exist, and no one even wondered what they were typing.
So yes I have a right to say the people that are paid to do things like this in particular, should hold a higher standard. At the least they should not be putting in a word they don't even know is a real word.
Your comment isn't any more of a ray of sunshine either. That's the pot calling the kettle black.

You should cool your jets. You really should take a page from your own book. The original video did not have c.c. lyrics on it, but a simpleton such as yourself cannot be bothered with such trivial matters right. You're to busy pointing out how your tax dollars pay for this work. You sound like the kind of dick who has never worked a day in your life... "Tax Dollars" what a fucking joke

Jesus is God in the flesh. We are all sinners, so we deserve the punishment for sin, which is the wrath of God. However, Jesus loves sinners, even though they sinned against Him. Jesus suffered the punishment for sin so that sinners do not have to. He did this by suffering and dying on a cross. He rose again from the dead on the third day.
Any sinner who fully trusts Jesus to save him or her is saved. That sinner has all of his or her sins forgiven. That sinner will never lose his or her salvation. That sinner will not go to hell. That sinner has eternal life.
