Canada Vignettes: Log Driver's Waltz (Sing-along Version)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 окт 2024
- A young girl who loves to dance and is ready to marry chooses a log driver over his more well-to-do, land-loving competition. Driving logs down the river has made him the best dancing partner to be found. This lighthearted, animated tale is based on the song The Log Driver's Waltz by Wade Hemsworth. Kate and Anna McGarrigle sing to the music of the Mountain City Four.
For ages 9 - 11
Directed by John Weldon - 1979 | 3 min

I remember this fondly for a few reasons. First like a LOT of Canadians, I saw this all the time growing up. Like, daily. Second (and way more fun) I once went to a "Quintessentially Canadian Wedding". The food was great. Build your own Poutine Bar, Blueberry Grunts with Maple Ice Cream...etc. But the Couples first dance, was to this song. With the animation projected behind. It was probably the hardest I've heard a wedding crowd ever laugh.
This sounds amazing
34 years later living rent-free in my head due to growing up Canadian.
for sure, it has been a priviledge!
This reminds me of my childhood. I remember it coming on in-between shows in the middle of the day.
Me too!
I remember rushing home to catch it, eventually caught it on VHS!
It’s so quintessentially Canadian
Really. I remember pleasing girls COMPLETELY
I remember it always playing at the end of the broadcast day, 2am in the morning, LOL. It would play just before 'Oh Canada' and the test pattern. I was lucky enough to have my own cheapass B/W TV in my bedroom as a kid and would catch 'Dr. Who' every weeknight, no matter how bad it messed my sleep up for school the next day. 🙂
27 years later, I actually did marry my log driver.
Congrats!
i came to Canada in March of 1989 and I arrived at 6ish in the morning when TVO was just opening for service. This cartoon was the FIRST Canuck production that introduced me Canada's wonderous and awesome capacity for warmth, imagination, and down-to-earth quality. Wade Hemsworth, my adoration for u is forever!
RIP Canada
This is such a quintessential Canadian memory, I feel bad for anyon who does get a feeling of pure joy from this tune and video…
I grew up in the 90’s, and this was played in school at least 4/5 of my elementary years..
I just became a Canadian yesterday. My Canadian friends sent me this to study and remember amongst a long list of other things to do to become true Canadian. Do I have the most amazing friends or what?
WELCOME TO OUR HOUSE!
Ive traveled the World and I always kiss the Ground when I come back Home 😊
I think my favorite part is when the beaver joins him and then gets bounced out...great song, great video, great memories!
When I was a kid, my mom would turn the volume up on the TV when this song came on. I'd rush to the living room from whatever place I was in the house to sing along with it.
If they still played it on TV(and I still had cable) I'd still do the same thing! XD
Love it. 😘
Thos is the kind of stuff we should show to our children while they're young.
We did the same thing!! We loved it.
What a beautiful trip down memory lane. Some good old Canadiana
This film has always made me weep happy tears. Part of my maternal Grandfather's family lived in N Ontario, and some were lumberjacks. One of my great-great-uncles was a log driver until quite a venerable age.
"Ti-Chris" ???
Good FRENCH 👍 CANADIAN 😊
This is the most happy, content and sweet comment section of RUclips. Even some bittersweet memories.
It is a favorite...reminds me of all the NFB films they showed us when we were in school!
This, The Sweater, and The Cat Came Back are iconic memories of my childhood in the 1970 and 80s. Even years later, I am sure that 'The Log Driver's Waltz' closed out every night of broadcasting (after Doctor Who) at 2 (or 3?) am before O Canada played and the CBC went off the air for the night. Times surely have changed, but this video is eternal.
Don't forgrt zthe Blackfly
@@curtisberard7831 Believe it or not, I never saw the blackfly video as a little kid! I don't know if i just missed that vignette or it never played, but the first time I saw it was about 5 years ago, way way WAY past my childhood. Tres bizarre.
You forgot the Railrodder. You also forgot paddle to the sea.
@@NormAppleton If I named em all, my post would have gotten tedious pretty fast.;-) Thus I named my personal faves only.
Classic. But I think I'd love to watch a half hour straight of the actual black and white film of the real dudes doing this job. Holy @#$#!
Just awesome animation for such a great Canadian folk song 🇨🇦! Dare you to try NOT singing along!
This used to be on TV all the time and I really liked it. I'm from a pulp and paper mill town and I am old enough to remember the log drivers guiding the logs from the boom on the lake into the river and then to the mill. Geez I'm old! It's really good to see this video.
Fionnuala McMahon
I also like guiding the log in to the river valley.
What a great song, reminds me of my dad. I remember him coming home and sitting at the head of the table, with his head down on his arms, when he'd lose friends. It was a hard profession.
@lana lake Honestly, if this was made into a "part of our heritage" commercial...
I'd be ok with that.
@@jamespolnick Agreed. The Nationsl Film Board cartoons are a part of our national identity thst is sadly under rated
Did that happen a lot, Marcus? That would be so hard :(
I heard this sing for the first time in Kindergarten and, due to my father, rediscovrred it about 5 years ago. I can't get enough of it now.
Nothing like the great Canadian Classics to stir old memories.Thank-you!
You know it
One of the many videos I remember as a kid in between shows. We would all get excited when they came on.

I'd watch "stuff" like this between "real" shows and years later did I realize how good animation shorts like this actually were. Thanks for uploading this.....
I know eh this is so classic
very fond childhood memories seeing this early Saturday mornings while watching my favorite cartoons
I loveit. It throws me back to younger years, Many happy members. THANK YOU!
I had this song stuck in my head for a week
This song insinuated itself into my life many years ago before I knew of Kate and Anna McGarrigle. I love the song and the animation. I only wish that it was available on record or CD.
I'd love to find it on record, it would add to the nostalgic charm of the song! But first I'd need a record player... it's on my thrift list. ☺️👍
We need to remember the NFB at least once a month....It was great..when Canadian Radio and TV were superior!!
Oooooh! I wondered whose lovely voice that was! Glad to know it's the McGarrigles.
This is cute. I smiled all the way through it. :) Thank you
never noticed all the innuendo in this song as a kid
What is the innuendo?
A lot of the NFB song videos creeped me out when I was a kid (I'm looking at you, BlackFly), but this one is great :)
i think Black fly wasn't made for kids due to the song being about a guy who deals with annoying Black flies who are more annoying than Moesquitos!
Do you remember the NFB short video with the egg who kept cracking and repairing itself?! It was creepy and sad, but also mesmerizing, couldn't look away! I think it gave me bad dreams!! The cracking and other sounds were like ASMR, but scary! 😨😵💫😅
Remember this from O Canada on Cartoon Network from forever ago
We Salutes from Cineplex Odeon Theatres (Canadian Movie chain theater) for National film board of Canada since 1939
Wow I loved this as a kid and the cat came back was great as well 🤣🤣❤️🇨🇦
As iconic as our anthem, for these men I will stand for the freedom of my country till the day I die.

The best type of waltz of all time! Because it will always please a woman completely! I wish this type of work was still around! Just to learn the log drivers waltz!
this is a fun video. and a fun song to sing along to. I love it.
A classic for sure
My grandmama loved this song!
This is a beautiful song. So sweet.
heh this takes me back, this was a vignette used in Seasame street broadcasted in Canada of course lol
Love this song ❤❤❤
remember it as a kid. Just showed it to my 4 yr old! ❤
This pretty much sums up Canada in general.
Lets Make Canada Great Again.
it will away be great and free. True Patriots love i stand on guard for thee.
I wish I could imagine this song as an opening music for my fanfic The British Actress's Waltz with Aladdin with Beauty and the Beast elements.
I actually remember this song because my elementary did a play of this song.
It's "birling", not "burling". Scots-Gaelic word. It refers to the rolling motion of the log under the driver's feet. It's also a pinky-finger movement on the bagpipes.
I have a correction for you, it's not Burling in the chorus - it's Birling, from the Scottish term meaning to revolve or cause to revolve

I only just got the undercurrent of this song...lol. Log driver....
"white water"
"Log driver." Giggity.

%100 Pure Canadiana, love it!!!
WHERE WAS I? 😅
I never heard it.
I have watched Beavis and Butthead before, and when I watch this, I like to picture what Beavis and Butthead would say to it. Probably something along the lines of:
(Logo of spinning thing at the beginning)
(Beavis makes noises of feeling dizzy. The thing stops.)
Beavis: That was pretty cool!
(Video starts)
Beavis: Why are these guys walking on longs?
Butthead: Because they are in the middle of the river, and they will fall.
Beavis: He has a stick. Sticks are cool!
(Animated guy)
Beavis: Now he is a cartoon. This is cool. He's like going down a cartoon river dancing on a log.
(brown-haired lady is seen)
Butthead: Whoa! There's a chick in this video.
(Guy passes the moose)
Beavis: Hey, there's a moose. Mooses are cool! What is that dancing on the log with him?
Butthead: I think it's like, a giant rat, or a beaver, or something.
(Doctors, Merchants and Lawyers)
Butthead: Hey, there are her parents.
Beavis: Hey, she's dancing with a guy in a suit. Suits suck!
Butthead: He fell. That was pretty cool.
Beavis: Hey, there's the log driver again.
Butthead: She turned into a stick.
(guys fall off the log)
Beavis: These guys are falling off the logs.
Butthead: Yeah. They're stupid.
Beavis: Yeah. Log drivers are cool!
(married on a log)
Butthead: hey, check it out. That chick is marrying that log driver dude.
Beavis: Yeah. And they are doing it all without falling off the log.
Butthead: That video was cool.
Ah the memories.

I really enjoyed that thabk you

i like when he hippie-jumps the moose
It was used for Japanese version from Nippon animation
LUV! THX!
There's so much inuendo in the title alone :)
Log driver....giggity
the waltz, of course, being, as most dances, a vertical manifestation of a horizontal desire. .
That comment was talking about Argentine Tango.
❤❤❤
Ok, the 14 of you who disliked this... care to explain why?

I wonder if it was an actual thing where women preferred to dance with log drivers

We would stop what we were doing and watch this commercial.
Blame the loss of the National Film board and a _lot_ of other Canadiana from our youth on Conservative budget cuts. They didn't cut their wages or benefits or anything else that impacted their own income or comfort. They just slash services for everyone else. Canadians old and new deserve the NFB and a well funded CBC.
JJ brought me here.
Ah good to be 6 again.
behold "thotts"
oh shit i think that guy just said something to me
Im a log driver who wants to waltz
Wheres Worksafe BC they would shut down this industry real quick!
Oh, Canada...
fuck off, i love it
I can't be the only one who though the lyric was 'whirling' instead of 'birling', which I had to google the meaning of, of course.
looks like shots on the colunge river
Is there a French version? I feel like there could be...
my muis ticher
The lyrics are a bit wrong. It's "He's birling down...," not "It's burling down...." They are people, not things.
Oh yeah. That means the lyrics in this video are just super fuckered then. Fixed. :)
wat?
This song has no right being as catchy as it is

I would have shared this on Facebook except for the horrible partisan advertisement slamming Justin Trudeau. RUclips fails on Canada Day.
indeed youtube and the web in general has gone ugly with political beliefs and opinions :s
Well it's not like there's lots of praise to be heaped on him.

Somehow I suspect these lyrics are a metaphor for sex. Log driving = rutting in and out, step lightly = the physical act outside of rutting, white water = sexual fluids, "pleases the girls completely" = self explanatory... or am I completely off-base?
Ytv
You guys are the National Film Board of Canada, and you've got spelling errors in your lyrics on the video! It's birling, not burling. It comes from an old Scottish word, birl, which means to revolve or cause to revolve. Seriously, my tax dollars pay for this poor quality work. SMH :/
It's my view that spelling mistakes like this often come from people not caring, a laziness.. When I first heard birling, I thought of burling, because I already knew curling. I looked it up, and within 5 minutes I knew the word was birling, and knew what it meant and where it came from. Someone there didn't bother to even ask if the word they were typing (burling) was even a real word. They'd never seen it before, and yet didn't even question it. Also, it's not a small spelling error. It's not a typo saying wltz instead of waltz. It's a word that doesn't exist, and no one even wondered what they were typing.
So yes I have a right to say the people that are paid to do things like this in particular, should hold a higher standard. At the least they should not be putting in a word they don't even know is a real word.
Your comment isn't any more of a ray of sunshine either. That's the pot calling the kettle black.
@@jediprice70 lol
You should cool your jets. You really should take a page from your own book. The original video did not have c.c. lyrics on it, but a simpleton such as yourself cannot be bothered with such trivial matters right. You're to busy pointing out how your tax dollars pay for this work. You sound like the kind of dick who has never worked a day in your life... "Tax Dollars" what a fucking joke
@@cindytomato you know it
@@cindytomato how did I know you posted? Because I get a notification on my cell phone whenever somebody responds to a comment that I have responded to on RUclips
Jesus is God in the flesh. We are all sinners, so we deserve the punishment for sin, which is the wrath of God. However, Jesus loves sinners, even though they sinned against Him. Jesus suffered the punishment for sin so that sinners do not have to. He did this by suffering and dying on a cross. He rose again from the dead on the third day.
Any sinner who fully trusts Jesus to save him or her is saved. That sinner has all of his or her sins forgiven. That sinner will never lose his or her salvation. That sinner will not go to hell. That sinner has eternal life.
