I was born in Lowell, MA and we visited Salem many times while I was growing up. Did you go to the House of Seven Gables?
A Tennesseean telling a New Englander how to pronounce Peabody is hilarious. And as a native New Englander that has family in Peabody, you're wrong.

I'm glad that you touched on the sadness of the real Salem witch trials. As someone who has performed The Crucible, it's such a heavy topic that sometimes doesn't get the weight it deserves. Yes, the play is considered fiction, but it's based on real people who died in a horrific way. Having never read it before auditioning for it, I came out with a huge admiration for those that lived it and innocently and needlessly died.

As an amateur historian I adore Salem. This town's got history for days and as a fellow Hocus Pocus fan, YES. Did you know, Ashleigh that witch hunts were about retribution? Having a little feud with your neighbor? Accuse them of witchcraft. Happy 4th Anniversary, you guys.

It goes even deeper than that. It was also used as leverage to "acquire" land from their neighbors.

You have no idea how happy I am to see this video. I live about an hour and a half away from Salem in NH and I've gone there so many times starting from fourth grade to my yearly pilgrimage there in October. I am so happy you and Blake had a great anniversary trip there (and that's an amazing spot for an anniversary). It was so cool seeing so many familiar places from the perspective of someone from someone visiting there for the first time from a different part of the country. There were so any parts of this video when i saw Olde Town Hall, Pepper Company, Crow haven Corner, etc. that I was like "I KNOW THAT PLACE" (cue excited pointing). I first went to the Salem Witch Museum circa 1990 and I see they never changed the presentation. Derby Wharf is also one of my favorite places anywhere and was so happy you explored it. I've never been to the Witch House or the Pioneer Village so this video officially put those on my to-do list. Sorry you didn't like lobster, I adore it personally but it is a unique taste.

Only 19 were sentenced to death. The other death was Giles Corey, who was pressed to death. Backstory is that if you were convicted of witchcraft (or other crimes, like murder, robbery, etc), all your property would revert to the Crown (Salem was a British Colony then), leaving your heirs nothing. When accused, you were required to enter plea of guilty/not guilty (like today). If you wouldn't plea, they would 'press' you with increasing weight until you entered plea (this is where term 'He was pressed into doing X' comes from). But by not entering plea & being pressed to death, his heirs were able to inherit his property. As G. Corey could see what was going to happen, he had himself pressed to death so his heirs wouldn't be destitute.

Great, honest and (of course) entertaining review of the town!
Laughed out loud when you mentioned Marblehead! ... Synonymous with "old money" in New England...the kind of place where folks put "of Marblehead" at the end of their names

Great video Ashleigh. I love Salem. It's such a beautiful little city. The thing with lobster is it's really hit or miss. The people that love it REALLY love it, and will pay anything asked. Personally, I prefer fried or steamed clams any day. And true New Englanders eat the clam bellies.
