Intro drawing by Ashley Anderson: pressstarttobegin.net/
After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

Even better, it's not Blizzard in that PSA but *ahem* "Snow Job".
Yep. Also of note: Snow Job appears in the completely different C64 game. :)
Get that kid off of my ice, you li’le wankers!
You took the words right out of my mouth. It must have been while you were…
the PSAs were just the Sunbow cartoon, him and Grid-Iron are from the DiC cartoon sive to six years later! 😎
Blizzard was a later figure released in 1988 to replace Snow Job. They are different designs & figures but both legit G.I. Joes.
This game and its sequel were staples for my brother and I growing up!
Lucky!
"Wassss a man. I wasss maaaan" ~ Cobra Commander
Weird, I actually replayed this game for the first time in years last week and here's a video. Gi Joe is an amazing game and definition of underrated gem
Agreed!
“Who wants a body massage?”
As awesome as the parodies were, the game was super cool! I remember sneaking into the wall, commandeering a vehicle, and the music changing indicating my new level of awesomeness!
Agreed!
That's not Blizzard,
That was Snow Job 😂
This looks like a go job for Snow Job!
Let’s hope he doesn’t blow it!
@@BigOleWords 😂 The Joe's have another guy for jobs that require blowing..
His name is Gung Ho 😂
Really wish I could insert his picture.
It's good to know this game exists. And knowing is half the battle!
G.I. JOOOOOOOOOE
COBRALALALALALA!
i see what you did there! 🤣😎
oh and COBRA-LALALALALA!
@@childofcascadiaa fellow movie fan!
Nailed it!
@bostonrailfan2427
Hell ya! That movie is ridiculous and awesome. When me and my brother and our friends were kids, we were *really* into gijoe. We saw the movie and went into absolute hysterics at COBRALALALA and were doing it at each other for weeks afterwards.
I’ve not been able to finish this one, but it’s definitely up there in terms of fun and variety for lesser loved platformers.
This was such a good game. I didn't even know it was made until a friend loaned it to me.
That’s a good friend!
That "insane vehicle" is the Cobra Buzz Boar, one of the more ridiculous Cobra contraptions.
This is a great game though - I love G.I. Joe!
I talk about it later in the video ;)
@@BigOleWordsYeah, I did post before the end. I am glad you appreciate the insane design. Many G.I. Joe fans hate it and use it as a benchmark for when the franchise was in decline. Personally, I dig that stuff.
Dude I love your style. I wish you'd do more NES reviews, man! You crack me up.
I think I’ve done about 100 so far, so I shouldn’t have that many more to cover!
@@BigOleWords Then you've got, what? 604 to go? :p Man, I just dig yer vids, Chief. They make my day. I don't think you know how good you are at this.
Yeah I like both Joe games on NES. They're really well done and the sprite work is lovely too. :)
Agreed!
Yo James! Found your channel trying to do a bit of research. 15 years ago I came home from work and my wife gave me a white plastic grocery bag full of nes games she found at a garage sale . And This game (G.I. Joe) was in there. But it gets better! Im just speechless having a nostalgia trip.. G.I. Joe! .. Nintendo! .. Video game Rentals! .. I seen on your top shelf you have some plastic cases. That's what this is, well that size anyhow with a covering..but the video store took the original box and cut it to fit the case. So it has the front, back , and side. And its been in there all safe and protected since the day thay made it. And it has the manual!! I never held something that made me just sit and stare at it , it's so much of my childhood all in one.... it's the trifecta :) I still just look at it and wonder what it's story is? I almost sold it once but the guy was just looking at the value and not the whole picture of how special it is... he wanted to erase the stores name off the cart! oh what I was trying to find information about is the video store.. (Premier Video) it's like they got this game ready to rent but closed their doors? But in all my years I've never seen another complete nes rental have you? Anyhow great channel.... Thank's Mother Brother :)
That’s awesome. I do have a few rentals but mostly a few cases and stickers on labels. And yeah I’d never remove them!
"Butts clenched with the satisfaction of victory" is not a phrase I ever thought I'd hear or needed to hear, but here we are. 😂
I’m trying to expand my phrasing ;)
Thanks for posting. Great to see you split the games into two videos. Looking forward to the next one.
I wanted to do both in one video but man covering the first one turned out much longer than I expected
Ahh, yesss. I always look forward to your NES games no one played videos. Keep ‘em coming! 🤘🏻
You got it!
As someone who was balls deep in GI JOE as a kid (my Kindergarten lunchbox) I'd have been over the moon to have this game earlier than my 30s when I learned it existed. One of those rare good tie-ins.
Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd read!
Those Fensler Films PSA clips sprinkled in 👌
_"I wanna get in the fridge too!"_
So good
I always liked the graphics in this one, as far as the "realistic " nes games went. It reminded me a bit of turtles 1, and it had the moving jungle trees we didn't get from contra!
man! this game was AWESOME!!! the Atlantis factor too, but this was best
Great video. Great channel. This was a big NES title for me, used to rent it at a local co op store. Loved it as a kid, not sure I ever beat it, but put in a ton of hours with great memories of solid graphics, music, and action. Imagine if it had 2 player mode!
Hey thanks so much! And this would be TOUGH with w-players :)
Haha! As you were describing the "shooting everything" problem, I started thinking of names like, "GI Joe's Secret Castle", then you called it out.
Haha great minds think alike!
I used to have the toy version of the one-man-helicopter thing that we see in the game. You'd stick your action figure on it and it was supposed to actually fly by pulling this plastic ripcord, but it never really worked the way you wanted it to work. Anyway, cool video!
That sounds way cool though...in theory!
Just discovered your channel! Love this stuff! Subscribing 😊
The ski guy in the PSA is called -- no joke -- Snow Job.
The best alias :)
I always wanted these ,got to play at least the first one at a friend's house when I was a kid. And that's for Rock and Roll, that is actually his version 2. At one point they ended up redoing a lot of the Joe's and some of the cobras. And version one of Rock and Roll only had the M60. And answer Captain Gridiron, if I remember correctly his bio said that he was a football star at West point.
Well that almost explains why Captain Grid-Iron exists!
I love this game :)
Thanks for the video dude
You are an outstanding human being !
Damn that’s a really nice thing to say! Right back atcha!
I just discovered your channel today and I wanted to thank you for formatting your content in 4:3 aspect ratio - something that is basically unheard of on modern youtube. To this day I still use an old CRT monitor and it is nice not having letterboxing!
I think you’re probably in the minority with the CRT viewing! But yeah I prefer the formatting over having wide space around the footage :)
@@BigOleWords Tiny minority I'm sure, but this screen refuses to die. I suspect too that youtube's compression algorithm is kinder to 4:3 content as for a given number of lines of resolution, there are fewer pixels. Because your game footage is some of the crispest I've ever seen on here.
I beat this game a few years ago. It was awesome. The password system was super helpful.
Yeah it is!
Never seen this game before, considering here in Europe we only got "Action Force" instead of G.I. Joe, but this gives me very heavy Contra… err… Probotector vibes, but with more varied/detailed level design. Also very interesting how I can certainly recognize different toys from back then (like that helicopter backpack). Something you can't say for many of those toy series tie-ins back then…
Yeah it seems like they really went full toy integration with these games!
Rock&Roll was my favorite and always powered him up fast as possible.
That is the correct path!
Blizzard was a later figure released in 1988 to replace Snow Job. Not sure how Snow Job got approved as a codename to begin with. They are different designs but both legit G.I. Joes.
The replicating boss is an AGP... Anti-Gravity Pod.
Ah ok!
I watched those dang cartoons when I was young. It's the only time in my life I liked anything to do with guns.... I grew up
Sadly many others did not!
Good game - very close to the toy line in the way of characters:..would rent it a lot as a kid
Fun fact, the nerd was gonna talk about this game and all the other GI Joe games because a GI Joe movie was coming out at the time, but he didn't have enough to say about them to justify a full ep, even noting that one of the games were pretty fun.
I'll have to try this one out.
translation from Nerd: “I can’t trash the games because they’re not bad, even if they’re glorified toy commercials”
he did do a game or two a long time ago, i think the C64 version
I would love to see his real opinions on these games
Yeah and unfortunately he’s kinda gotta stay the course with the character and bad games. BUT my favorite AVGN is the Castlevania four part where most of the games are really good but with funny or frustrating moments. The humor feels more natural.
Another really detailed and witty review. Nice job!
Hey thanks so much!
I'd really like to watch a video that runs down all the games on the NES (and/or other systems depending on how many there are) that allow the player to switch characters like how you pointed out in the video, such as in this game, TMNT 1, and Little Sampson. I, too, really enjoy this feature and I'd like to find out about and play any game that has it. Great video, BTW! Love the channel!
Well you’re in luck because I did make that video! ruclips.net/video/TTEIL6mDNVc/видео.html
@@BigOleWords Oh, sweet! I'm going to watch that right now! Thanks!
I played this as a kid but I think I was too young to be good at it, but remember it being different.
Maybe Atlantis Factor?
I remember this appearing at the video rental place my grandma always took me to in 1991 and taking it home for the weekend and actually really liked it. It was pretty fun. GI Joe was kind of done by 1991 (I was aging out of toys too) but I still enjoyed it.
Thanks grandma!
"Alright give him the stick....DON'T GIVE HIM THE STICK!!!!!!!"
I couldn’t write one of those if I tried. Brilliant in its total insanity.
I don't think I've played a single one of these Kid games you've covered. Actually, I don't think I've EVER played a kid game at all. And now, going back via these old school reviews, I kinda feel like I missed out on something really awesome during the 8 bit era.
I mean, sure. I got to experience all the awesomeness of Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden trilogy , Castlevania, Contra, and all the killer games put out by Konami, as well as awesome games by Capcom like Megaman, Street Fighter 2010, and Trojan. But thinking about how I COMPLETELY missed EVERYTHING by Kid just makes me kinda wanna go back and try some of that stuff.
Especially Kick Master! That game looks SO F**KING DOPE!!!
I mean you definitely were on the right track there. I’d describe KID as like a really good punk band you’ve never heard of. They’re not on the same level as some of the bigger acts, but if you’re well versed in the genre it’s a revelation to find something that good that never got popular.
And yes, Kickmaster rules!
You can cling to the inside of that wall you scaled with the Buzz Boar to reach that last bomb.
Isn’t that what I did? I can’t remember now…
@@BigOleWords if you're on foot and jump pressing toward that wall, your character will grab it. The Buzz Boar isn't needed. But, it makes it a whole lot easier.
Most of the toys the vehicles and characters in this game are based on had been discontinued for years before the release of the game.
Interesting…
I remember never being able to beat this one. I think i got to the level where you drive the Buzz Saw around.
It gets really hard unless you magically avoid damage leading up to the bosses. Those passwords help for sure
@@BigOleWords We did have a Game Genie, but I cannot remember if it was usable on it, I would assume so and that's how I saw farther levels.
I JUST finished this for the first time this past week. Such a good game!
Good timing!
You've put together a pretty good Video Here.
This Game looks like it's pretty awesome.
Hey thanks so much! And it is!
This really is a fun game, and it's weird that it's seldom mentioned as a genuine NES classic despite being released close to the peak of the system's popularity.
I have very little attachment to GI Joe: Real American Hero an an IP, but from what I have seen of the cartoon it was pretty much perfect material to adapt into an NES action platformer or run 'n gun game. And this is one of the rare non-Konami or Capcom licenses where the developer gave us a game that really perfectly matches the IP. I don't think it's quite the S-tier game that Castlevania, Contra, Super C or the best NES Mega Man games are. It sits somewhere between A and B tier, which in a library as stacked with quality titles as the NES makes it a really solid game.
Totally agree on all points! KID has become my favorite developer and this is one of their best.
I rented this a TON when I was a kid, as well as The Atlantis Factor, but didn't actually own my own copies until the late 90's early 2000's. So freaking good!!
This would’ve been an amazing rental :)
Good stuff. I really do like this one. There's also a third, even harder playthrough waiting before you get the best ending.
Best ending?!? Damn it now I gotta see that
The copter is just The Battle Copter and the Droid is The Pogo Ballistic Battle Ball.
Hahahaha Pogo Ballistic Battle Ball!?!?
I had that one! The ball.
@@BigOleWords Google Swampsmasher. Lol
It looks like fun. I had no idea this game existed and I grew up then. I wonder why nobody knew about it.
Not sure considering how popular GI Joe was
@@BigOleWords I know. Because SNES came out in 1990. Didn't play much NES after SNES.
I was a huge GI Joe fan but never knew about this game at the time. I would have loved it - all the bosses and vehicles are straight from the cartoon/toys.
That’s what I assumed but I’m glad to know they actually were toys
One of my favorite nes titles
Nice!
Man, hearing "parking lot prostitute" after a 3 week road trip is SO appropriate.
Also, general infantry seems really misnamed, given how oddly specific each of these characters are. Except Duke. He is definitely "generic army man, U.S.A. edition".
Come one dude, lots of people played this when I was a kid. Now the sequel for this game less people played for sure.
You know, I agree but honestly I couldn’t think of a better category :)
There's one character swap game I'm a bit surprised you missed: JVC's Star Wars. You start out as Luke but as you find them, you can play as Han and Leia (Obi Wan and Threepio aren't playable but they're selectable for certain parts of the game).
I still have never made it past the very beginning of that game!
@@BigOleWords Neither did I. It's a tough game.
this one was an underrated gem! I forgot this was a KiD joint though. (would later go on to do the import-only PEPSIMAN!) I remember renting this one. suppose I'll need a walkthrough if I do come across a copy of this? definitely mained Snake-Eyes whenever I could.
I would definitely recommend a map for the later bomb sections. Like Milon if you’re exploring blind you will die before you find what you’re looking for.
what an amazing game!!!! played again recently! still so good!
Agreed!
Nice review. I rented both games as a 13 years old, found the Atlantis Factor Way more accesible than first GI joe. Even managed to finish it. First one, nope, too hard.
Great video my man!
Thanks bud!
The GI Joe NES games are criminally underrated, awesome games, awesome soundtracks.
The soundtracks are especially catchy for sure
@@BigOleWords no kidding! where are all the awesome remixes?
rented his a few times. such a fun run and gun. I'm surprised it's considered a game no one played. I'd think the sequel falls more into that, not the first game.
It probably isn’t, but I haven’t really created a series for games people are more familiar with. I should though, I got things to say about Zelda!
until today, i still Humm the first level music from THE ATALANTIS FACTOR , i know most people love this one more, but for me ? GI JOE TAF is a superb game, and i just can't get enough of it, mainly because it feels way too much like KICKMASTER .
Honestly, some NES games like Kickmaster and GI JOE TAF are the reason i love games on 8bit systems.
There were a lot of deeper cuts that piqued my interest as I got really into collecting the NES but the KID stuff really resonated with me. Such strange visual choices and inventive sprite designs. It’s like finding out your favorite pop artist made on really weird noise record.
@@BigOleWords awesome, they had their own signature style and i loved that.
This is one I would have liked cause I was definitely a Joe kid! Seeing all those vehicles animated on screen just looks cool. And yes those toys are just as funny looking in person lol that roller one I remember being so finicky. One of those you’d probably loose parts pretty quickly
Anyways, I always wondered how these games played, so I can’t wait to hear about the other one! Didn’t even know there was two
Dude I’d love to see the actual Buzz Boar in action
@@BigOleWords I wish I still had my old collection! My aunts worked at a department store so I would get a few for gifts. After your video I had to check on EBay. That particular one isn’t a horrible price! Some of the others though 😰
You can't help but love cheesy 80's/90's PSA's in cartoons. They were always the same. "Don't do drugs, kids." "Don't talk to strangers." "If your house is on fire, call 911" Do any modern cartoons still do them?
I don't think those are thing anymore (at least done straight and not ironically). Those PSAs and other crammed-in wholesome message stuff were pretty much a product of their time, cartoon makers' concession and appeasement in the face of criticism they faced of making nothing but empty, meaningless violent romps that rotted the brains of the children while aggressively pushing their toy lines and unhealthy cereals and fast foods during the ad breaks.
Yeah I feel like the messaging is more integrated into the show instead of crammed into the outro.
I used to rent this a lot back in the day, never did manage to beat it. The best part of this game is really the soundtrack.
Amazing soundtrack
Fun game! I am glad to see it get some love!
Yes sir!
this is not a cheap game to acquire now, bought it for $100 dollars a couple of years ago, but well worth it, love these originals, great video even though I just discovered it now.
You unlocked aome of my core memories here
Success!
All of my friends played this great game, back in the 90's.
Either this or the Capcom one. I played the Capcom one.
Damn y’all were the cool kids then!
@@Gatorade69 both of Them. But the first one is way better.
@@BigOleWords Man I didn't KNOW about GI Joe games in The Day. I had GI Joe CASSETTE TAPES, though: anyone remember those?

Never played that one!
Butts clenched with the satisfaction of victory. Now that's a tshirt
Working on it!
4:00 - Don't forget the other two aspects of Snake Eyes in this game. First, his weapon is the only one with infinite ammo. Second, he can rapid fire grenades. Yeah, Snake Eyes is kind of OP in this game.
Didn’t know that about the grenades!
@@BigOleWords No joke. Any boss that flies above you is a corpse in seconds with Snake Eyes.
This game is pretty cool! I just wish I had the patience to play it through. I have more patience than I did as a kid for it though lol!
I doubt I’d have the patience my child self did either!
If hawk is op how did he get captured!?! It a setup!
I mean you never see Cobra Commander’s face. Maybe it was Hawk all along!
I know you probably meant "Never released outside North America" to primarily focus on "not released in Japan, surprisingly", but instead my mind went to the UK. There, where patriotic exclusively US heroes might not do so well, they rebranded the toy line as Action Force, with different character names, modified likenesses and entirely different plots, with their own continuity of comic books.
A few years after the release of the cartoon in NA, the decision to keep their stuff entirely different or switch over for easy conversion resulted in minor edits to the cartoon and some attempts to explain to the European audience why the team was now fighting Cobra instead of Baron Ironblood of the Red Shadows. It was a bit of a tragic story, coinciding with the death of one of the UK company's owners, the licensing agreement expiring, and the toy factories shutting down.
The changeover happened in 1985 though, so by 1991 European kids should've been familiar enough with the slightly modified GI Joe main story enough for a PAL localization to be easy. Nowhere near as involved as the Contra/Probotector conversion.
A few other people mentioned that it was big over there, I had no idea!
I still have a massive problem with the name "probotector". It sounds like the brand name of something to prevent alien butt probes.
"Alien abductions happening in your area? Afraid youll end up with something where the sun dont shine? No problem! With our patented 'Probotector' metal underpants you can sleep peacefully, knowing even if they abduct you, your butt will be safe!"
I have a feeling Blizzard is only in the game because the Dev didn’t want to use snow job.
You’re probably right!
Some of the stages looks like they are in colorblind mode.
Nailed it
Pity there isn't Scarlett and Roadblock instead of Blizzard and Gridiron, giving us the same foursome as the arcade title.
That would be cool! Roadblock is in the sequel: Atlantis Factor.
Gi Joe *2* is excellent, 1 is okay. But 2 is very underappreciated
I haven’t played Atlantis as much yet but I’ll get back to you in a week
Oh man, I loved this game! I had no real attachment to GI Joe, but as a kid in small town, I'd usually rent whatever game was new (or whatever was still available) from the local video store, and even if it was bad, I'd sink my teeth into it over the weekend I had it. This one really sucked me in and I ended up renting it a few times. Still don't really care about GI Joe, but a good game is a good game.
That’s a solid rental right there!
I was never a big fan of GI Joe as it always gave me that military indoctrination vibe as a kid and I was way more interested in classic TMNT series anyway. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Atlantis Factor as a kid and eventually played this first Real American Hero version via emulation and it's a fantastic licensed game among many on the NES. But like you said the cryptic maze BS in the bomb planting levels can be exhausting and really takes away from an otherwise perfect game. Even though there's a password and continue system it's almost pointless at the later levels trying to rebuild and catch up from a fresh start which is a must in attempting to complete this game which I've never done but gotten close many times. 😄
Agreed on all points. I was also way more into TMNT than Joe :)
I had the sequel but never had the original GI Joe game
Deep cut there!
I owned and played this game alot and beat it a couple times.
Awesome!
Fun fact in the comics raptor died form food poisoning he got from a bad can of beans.
My kid self chose the Raptor figure from shelves full of Joe figures cos I thought he was cool... He really wasn't cool at all. But eh, I liked the bird outfit and lil falcon he had too. But yeah, in the Marvel comic even Cobra Commander mocked how silly Raptor was. :P
What a douche-nozzle.
he died alongside a bunch of others after being trapped inside a ship that was buried under rocks and lava…pretty gruesome stuff!
No! That can’t be right!
@@BigOleWords …it’s funny but true! GI Joe #116 showed he and a bunch of others including Dr. Mindbender died from botulism from tainted food
i'm old and played tf out of this game
You’re not old, you’re wise ;)
Can't say I was ever fond of the cartoon, like Transformers I far, far preferred the Marvel comic (and heck, TF and Joe even crossed over a couple times). GI Joe's doing pretty well as a toyline again currently due to the 6 inch scale GI Joe: Classified series which I did collect a few of (Duke, Storm Shadow, Flint and Lady Jaye) before selling them cos I decided a large part of my enjoyment of the 80s figures were the vehicles and that's not practical or very affordable in 6 inch action figure scale as it was on the old 3.75 inch figure scale. :P
Agreed, the vehicles really make it
No one played? I mean, I can tell you at least four people played it, being me, my brother, and two friends from the neighborhood.
Damn it, I didn’t account for those four! But seriously yeah I’m sure people played all these games but probably GI Joe more than most.
For me, this falls just short of being a great game - it's held back by the stupid bomb placing levels. If they kept it simple and it was just kill the bad guys followed by a boss fight - G.I. Joe would be in the conversation for the best action platformers on the NES along with the Contra/Ninja Gaiden/Castlevania games of the time.
And honestly that’s my point about Kickmaster which is all those things and more. I do appreciate the ambition of those bomb stages, just not the execution.
Great game!
I beat this game's ass so bad, after hours and hours, while using SnakeEyes because I was like 8 and loved Ninjas. I still love this game, but I never beat the Atlantis Factor.
Atlantis Factor is way harder in my opinion, but Storm Shadow is pretty cool!
@@BigOleWords Ha, who did you think I played as? 😋 He was also a ninja. Those first 3 first bosses after the path branched all kinda wrecked me. I think I eventually beat two of them. That was a rental for me, and I never downloaded a ROM for that one. I would if I had a working computer. I'd probably be better now; hell, I beat Moon Crystal. There's an obscure NES game for you.
In my top five most played NES games. I just can't finish the third quest.
Oh damn! Third quest?!
@@BigOleWords Road Pig is unbelievably tough the third time around.
80's father: Ah! These large muscular men of military will ensure my son doesn't grow up as some pansy fruitcake
80's Son: Suddenly I want to want to look at mom's Lumberjack calendar.
Yep maybe. And Masters of the Universe had an even larger gay following, especially since those muscley dudes weren't wearing as much clothing. And when they did? Well, Prince Adam's pink vest and lavender tights weren't exactly the most hetero outfit. :P
@@carn9507guess “Man-At-Arms” was really “Man-In-Arms” 🤣
Fabulous title.
Do you record all aspects of the game play on these? Like for this game, do you have access to footage of everything you did still? I'd be very interested in discussing an arraignment with you on providing game play footage like this for another channel.
I do! You can find my email in the about section is you want to hit me up there :)
Well now I know, and knowing is half the battle 😏
That’s right!
I always say this, but with Hasbro properties, I always find it quaint there was a period in time where G.I. Joe was more popular and more ubiquitous than Transformers. Unlike today where Transformers is their most major brand, and at any time has several cartoon series, movies, and outside of the toyline merchandising, and G.I. Joe just has a collector's toy line or two, a movie that came out like 2 years ago that everyone forgot about, and maybe the comics. And even then, the most they've had in years. But they got 2 NES video games and a big honkin' arcade cabinet and the Transformers had to wait until the 3-D game era. Of course, seeing those two awful Japanese Famicom games (one was a Disk System exclusive), it's not hard to see why.
Gee, it's almost like a cartoony take on a war against terrorism don't go over so well post-9/11, nor is American military adventurism quite as accepted as it was back around Reagan's era when the cartoon-related toys were selling. I wonder why?
@@richmcgee434 Cuz Sigma Six was a failure and the two live action movies bombed, Dude. Transformers' franchise came back strong in the mid-90's with Beast Wars, and eventually the somehow profitable live action movies. Hasbro was so sure that maybe a third G.I. Joe movie would fix things that the sabotaged their only cartoon series in a decade for a movie that wouldn't happen. At least until Snake Eyes, which didn't do particularly well either, but it at least had a small series of merchandise. And while I do think an unpopular, real life war had a play into why it was mostly a nostalgia brand at that point, it just didn't have the same staying power TF had since it's late 90's second wind.
@@mightyfilm GI Joe Classified, the current 6 inch scale line, is doing the best business Joe's had since the 80s I reckon.
@@carn9507 It's getting its due for the first time in quite some time. Not that there was ever a massive desert of the Joes. I remember when Hasbro had their off brand Lego toys, G.I. Joe had sets and minifigs produced along side the Transformers. Though I only ever really saw the blind bag Minis. But the TF franchise exploded ever since that first Bayformers movie, and it's a shame that didn't happen with the Joes with their movies.
But I'm glad to see the joint effort of Hasbro, Super 7 and Funko for bring the brand back to toy selling status.
GI Joe actually sustained its momentum for 9 to 10 years, Transformers was really only big for four years, five at most…GI Joe got shows and toys made continuously like Transformers but didn’t get a huge hit in the 90s like Transformers did and even then that hit didn’t last
I'm a little surprised that we didn't get this over here. Sure, G.I. Joe was rebranded Action Force for us, but damn the action figures were popular, second only to Star Wars.
I didn't notice any mention of Storm Shadow, that's disappointing, he was the bomb 😎👍
he wasn’t an enemy then, he was one of the good guys…he turned again a few years later
Action Force! And I think Storm Shadow is in the sequel.
@@BigOleWords he is…he’s with the Joes as a good guy
By time this came out , the toys and comic had reverted back to GI Joe name for us UK folk too a couple years before but interest in the property had declined.
@carn9507 I would have been long out of my initial action figure phase by the 90s, and have no recollection of Action Force changing to either G.I. Joe Action Force or just plain old G.I. Joe! Yup, you sent me down a nostalgic rabbit hole this morning, so thanks for that 🤣
Where have you been dude? I hope all is good
Havin’ babies! I’ll back soon :)
@@BigOleWords Congratulations brooo!! Family comes first!
