O-ring chains are a gimmick. May be actually worse. Does not take long for o-rings to wear out and good luck trying to get lube back into chain. Stop being lazy people and lube your regular chain. Will last years and years. Funny how us old-timers got 50k out of a regular chain just by doing 5 minutes of maintenance once in a while.

Rust is not the only reason to lubricate an o-ring chain.
You also need to lubricate it to keep the o-rings from drying out and disintegrating and keep them soft a pliable.
    Otherwise...great info.

The greasing of the chain is not only done so that the chain does not rust, but it is greased mainly to prevent the drying of the O-rings or X-rings, thus prolonging the life of the chain and the quality of the rides. O-rings equal more friction ..... X-rings equal less friction ......

I run x ring on my road bikes. Non o ring on dirt. I don’t race dirt bikes anymore but the once a year Enduro. I have multiple chains for different sprocket combos. Non o ring dirt chains are cleaned and oiled before the race with silkolene standard chain lube. Never broke a chain even on long hard enduros. When I raced road bikes (tz250) I didn’t run o ring chains then either, but those chains were cleaned and lubed totally before each race.

O rings chain last longer so is better for a trail bike or something you use for off road if you are racing and you want to make as much power as possible the non o-ring chain might be a better choice because there is less friction however dirt can get in the joints and wear it out quicker.

As to robbing power, after they are warmed up and properly lubed they spin pretty free

    Hi,
What you show there as non o-ring chain looks like grandpa's chain from his Mobra.
There are high quality non-oring MX chains made of speacial alloys that can last as long as any o-ring chain.
I use CZ MX Gold and in almost 2 seasons of mud and harsh conditions it still doesn't look like yours, actually it is nice and shiny. In these 2 seasons I adjusted it 2-3 times and it's not locked or anything. Yamaha WR400.

Anyway 530 non o'ring chain is the same wide like 525 o'ring if u use 525 non o'ring chain is les weight. With a chain without o-rings there is less resistance which goes hand in hand with less fuel consumption and in racing better laptime. The reason you lube an O-ring chain is is because the rollers and sprocket cogs are metal to metal contact and need lube or you will wear the cogs. An O-ring chain only needs a little lube on the rollers on the side that mates with the sprockets. Non-Oring chains need to be lubed on the rollers AND between the plates. That is a much bigger mess. Lubing an oring chain to prevent rust is not "only to prevent rust".

RoManiac yeah I’m hearing ya, but I’m not concerned with the horsepower deficit, we have to remember that friction is the enemy of all machines. With an increase in friction we see an increase in wear. So if a machine is working extra hard to move an object then we can only assume that the machine is experiencing undue wear, across the board. Having said that, I use a $200 chain, run it dry and get 70+ hours out of it and the rear sprocket. It comes down to what a person feels comfortable doing. All is good.

O ring chains suck. They trap dirt and grime and chain is hard to keep pliable.

O-ring chains are just another modern-day gimmick. Does not take long for o-rings to wear out. Not what o-rings wear designed for. So you end up having to grease it anyway. Stop being lazy people and lube you regular chain. It will last for years and years.

I know how to deal with a non o-ring chain, just grease it soon after it gets water otherwise depending on your riding habits.
This o-ring chain is just another spoiling addiction for spending more money, just another BS!
And then they sell specific products to clean the chain as well as specific ones to grease it, each spray bottle will cost around $20-25 while for non o-ring chains you just need a basic spray grease bottle or SAE140 oil, much much cheaper!
