    Dear Mr. Mike, I want to thank you infinitely for making this video, I have an old military willys jeep from 1961 "M38A1" which I bought two years ago and it came with a Carter YF carburetor, since the beginning of this year it began to emit black smoke from the exhaust pipe and last week I decided to buy the kit to restore my carburetor, but I didn't know how to do it and thanks to your video which details with absolute clarity, I was able to clear my doubts, I wish you long life, well-being and may God grant good health, thank you very much. Carlos Valero, from Venezuela, Altos Mirandinos, South America.😉

    Very helpful. Thank you. I'm working on a 1960 Willys wagon and the carb was missing the ball under the accelerator pump diaphragm that was supposed to be held in with a clip. It was also missing the weight and ball at the top of the accelerator pump circuit.

    My 1968 Chrysler has an issue with slight hesitation with acceleration (around 35-40 mph). I think a bad accelerator pump is why. It also has a Carter (only it's a 2 barrel model). I think it needs a new accelerator pump entirely (as those are usually rubber and crack with age), but watching your video did a very good job of explaining the entire circuit as a refresher to me. Doesn't look like too bad of a job to do.

    Thank you very much for this video. I'm working on a '77 Jeep CJ5 and the accelerator pump diaphragm was hard as a rock. In rebuilding I thought I lost the little ball in the pump area but it turns out it is retained. I could only see it by looking way up the little hole in the diaphragm housing and I see something moving in there. I used your test method and it works perfectly.

      Mikes Carburetor Thank you Mike, and by the way we bought all of the repair parts from you. Everything fit perfectly and the carburetor is back on the jeep and we started it up for the first time in seversl years. Runs great. Now on to the belts and hoses.

      @@MikesCarburetor Your instructions and videos are really very helpful. The time you take and detail you go into are really appreciated. Like when you point out such small details like the little ball in the accelerator pump. So many "how to" videos these day people just rush through things. When I opened up the carb I personally had never seen the inside of one like this before, so it's all new to me. Thanks again.

    Wow, very simple carb. I dove very deep into Holly's, 4bbl dbl pump, custom metering blocks, idle air jets etc. I like simple... lol.

    Thank you, very informative. Do you know if the outlet part varied in size, depending on the engine it's on?

    Hi Mike. I feel my accelerator pump is working fine after this test, yet it still bogs at quick acceleration. Could it be that my YF just isn’t a big enough carb for my motor? I have an early 50’s Chrysler 251 which I think came originally with a larger Carter used on Willy’s maybe. Or could I move the clip down a position to see if that helps?

    Would it matter or make a difference if the carb has the check ball and check weight vs just the check weight with the point on it? Or do they both pretty much work the same way?

      Yes, unlike most carburetor the yf/yfa sends gas to the discharge on the up stroke.

    Any guidance on how the screw at the top of the accelerator pump should be adjusted? When should the hole for that screw be uncovered? How should it behave?

      @@MikesCarburetor My carburetor does have a screw on the top. Maybe this is incorrect. Is there an email address where I can send you a picture of what I have? Thank you!

    My accelerator pump has two outlets, one is directed just like yours, into the throat. The other one is directed back into the float bowl. what's the deal with that?

      @@MikesCarburetor When I pump it by hand as you did sometimes the stream is on the throat side, sometimes on the bowl side, sometimes a little in both. I hope it works ok on the highway... maybe if it doesn't, I should put a little JB Weld in the bowl side hole?

    After I connect accelerator pump up to metering rod it comes out the jet when I release the spring ?

    • @dancurrier374
      @dancurrier374 3 года назад

      I didn’t have the pump linkage connected to the throttle shaft , so that’s why The metering rod was pulled up out of the Jet by the accelerator pump spring action. Been a long time since I tried to install a kit in a carburetor, sure appreciate your instructions !

    I was told this was the correct carb for my 1951 L6-161 ... We installed it and noticed that if I accelerated hard it woul bog down and when I stepped off the accelerator she would straighten up ... My mechanic said that's because it squirts gas into the engine when you take your door off the gas or as you say, on the upstroke. Isn't that an odd design? What was the purpose. We changed carbs and are now running her on a later 1960's era with climatic control (which was on the engine when I purchased it but it was missing a lot of parts). Anyway... Isn't it an odd setup for fuel to enter the engine when you take your foot OFF the accelerator ??

    • @johnchiappardi1114
      @johnchiappardi1114 5 лет назад

      We saw your video on the YF and used that to guide us...all seems correct ...she just doesn’t seem to like that carb...as I said when I would try to accelerate hard...she would bog down ...sometimes stall...as long as I did a slow steady pressure on the accelerator all was fine ...the other carb ...I believe is a WO (it has the climatic choke, I think that’s what it’s called) runs real good ...was just wondering if what I described on the YF was unusual or not ...my mechanic friend rebuilds engines and works on vintage cars and was unsure why it was running the way it was. I bought it from another “old carbs “ expert who had rebuilt it so I can’t imagine it was re-built backwards ...but you never know ...is there a universally accepted carb for a L6-161 engine ?? Thanks again for making the videos you do !! Very helpful and informative !!
