  • Another short trip this time and I didn't really get much done. I got the pickup towed in for service, finally got internet hooked up and did some random sorting. Otherwise not much progress at the house. I am still debating about what to do about the books. Another day, another struggle when you are cleaning out a hoarder house. #hoarderhouse #estatecleaning #toyotapickup

Poor you! I was in the same situation as you for my mother and then my sister, 2 years later. I didn't worry about everything.
    1. I picked up and took home all the papers that were important.
    2. I put all the clothes in garbage bags which I donated to good causes.
    3. I took the things I wanted to keep for myself.
    4. The only things I kept to sell were the items that had a lot of value, ($500 dollars and more); type of household appliances, tv, furniture, car, home. Everything else went to good causes. I don't know how many car trips I made for that. Every time I went to clean, my car was filled to the ceiling. If you want it to go faster, you can rent a small truck to make these trips.
    5. With everything being stressful and demanding, I found that my peace of mind wasn't worth all the trouble or money I could have made trying to sell all the small items. The house was not sold until a year later.
    6. Your stress is trying to make money with these items. As soon as I made the decision to let go of the little money I could have made, the solutions were easy.
    7. I wish good luck! It’s not an easy task!

It will take up too much of her time and be overwhelming, she would be too focused on reading the chats rather than getting stuff done. Even watching Live videos sometimes is annoying because they end up being sooo long and the video maker would stop talking just to read chat comments. I would do as someone else mentioned, just choosing ONE person to help as "professional organizer" and video chat or call that One person for assistance and advice

I live in a northeastern middle sized city. When my uncle passed away he had a decent number of books. The library system fetched them and took them to their main library where they have a bookstore and May have sold some online too. My mom didn’t make any money but she also didn’t have to deal with shlepping them anywhere. It’s a thought depending on a nearby library system that is interested and you no longer expect money from them.

I know 2 local libraries in my area do book sales every month or quarterly. They already know which books sell and which don't. The ones that don't sell they put out with a "free" sign for a few hours per day, or throw in the recycling bin. I would give to libraries also, it helps them stay open and our local ones use the money for free events or bookclubs in their rooms.

As the comments have shown, there are many ways to organize and dispose of things. Perhaps this will help in decision making when it comes to "go or stay." If you don't want it, who will be harmed if you get rid of it? Certainly not your parents. Aunts, uncles, siblings, mom's best friend? If no one will be harmed, you then emotionally let go of it. It doesn't matter HOW you get rid of it. That's up to you and your personality. Trash, sell, donate- whatever. I doubt anyone but you will care about what happens to any of it and I doubt any harm will come to anyone by having it gone.

How do you eat an elephant?...One bite at a time. You're making progress, little by little. There's no timeline. Every time you're there you get a little more accomplished and that's how you get through it. I'm thinking if you can't find someone to sell the books to, you may have to weed out the ones you think might sell at a garage sale and see if the local recycle center will take the rest off your hands. Don't burden yourself with books. They're not worth the stress and anxiety. It's paper...be brutal and just get them out of there.

So good to see you smile! Mr Cat is your loyal companion!! As for the quilting books and supplies - have you contacted that woman who is a quilter who was so interested in some of the fabrics? Likely she may be able to get a whole bunch of quilters to sift through and purchase a bunch.
Always good to see you - you’re accomplishing a lot, it is a “big thing” to clean out someone’s estate. To overcome the “overwhelm factor,” try concentrating on just one thing at a time - the books, or the craft supplies, the left over food, etc. Organize it, make appropriate calls, ask each person if they have any additional ideas to suggest to you if they can’t take materials. Leave them your phone contact in case they speak to someone who expresses an interest in whatever “stuff” you talked to them about. If you clean out those bookshelves, that will give you space to set decorative items you plan to sell - you’d organize your own “shop” that way.

I am going through this right now with my mom’s house.. I decided to keep a few things for sentimental reasons but if it was something bought in the past 20 years, it is just stuff!! Donate the books to the library, keep one or two cards between your mom and dad, don’t feel like you have to recoup money from what your mom had already spent.. Maybe advertise a free crafters/quilters sale, for me I would be pleased if someone could just use it. I also put like things together and tackled one room at a time. If your Mom were still here, she probably would still be buying things!! Take care of yourself first and foremost..💜

May I suggest you buy a scrapbook. As you run into things like cards, pick just a few, and place in the scrapbook. Do the same with pics, documents you’d like to keep etc. when you finish with getting things cleared and gone, you will have a book of “keepsakes “ . You will also have a book about your Mom to look through and you won’t have to feel like you got “rid of everything “.

Mr. Cat is a wonderful emotional support for you. Looks like your Mom let the cat inside and fed him. As for the cards you gave your Mom you might keep the ones that are special to you. I had to clean out our house when my husband died..the horror of losing him and dissolve of our house as I only had a single income which did not pay all the massive credit card bills, medical bills, food and utilities. I do know the pain you are experiencing. Hugs and love for you.

Sometimes the best decision is just to make a decision - knowing that it´s perhaps not the perfect one. Just giving oneself permission to get it wrong now and then and not take it too seriously. Clutter drains the energy out of you so trying to do it perfectly is almost impossible. Good luck, you are clearly starting to feel a bit better and that is lovely to see.

youre doing great! Keep big picture in mind re $. the vehicles and furnitre are going to be best return for effort so your focus on those arre correct. If you plan on renting this house out lets say for $500/week. You are forgoing $26k per year for however long it takes to clear the clutter. if you chunk the items down to their weekly rent value that may help you to let them go quicker rather than for higher price. Time is money in this situation. you are unlkely to get more than 1 weeks rent for all the books. you might get 2 weeks rent for the craft supplies. its not worth spending more than 3 weeks processing these 2 main hoards otherwise you are effectively losing money.

    Hi:
I may be reaching for the stars, but would a local Library want the Books? Is there a local one to your Mom's house?
About the cards: I think that I would pick a few favorites, and put them in one large frame to hang. I think it's nice
that she kept the cards that YOU gave to her. I would not give them away - too personal......especially if given to
    her from your Father.
Maybe take some of the can soups back to your home, and eat them...they will become outdated???
If the house will be a hardship to keep....maybe you might consider selling it then.
Keep Calm, and Carry On.....as they say in England.
    M.

I can see that it all got to you by the end of the video, but remember every little bit you do helps. I have the same dilemma as you said about the cards your mum saved. I have a matching photo frame, trinket box, and little clock that I bought for my mum. It was put in a box of stuff for me when she passed. I don't like them, they're not my taste. It matched her bedroom. I feel bad getting rid of it so it is sitting on the floor in my spare room. Also the photo frame has a picture of my step dad, who wasn't always a very nice person. I don't want that but again I feel bad if I throw it away. What do you do? 🙆. It would be nice if you could get someone to come with you next time. It'll give you moral support and someone to bounce ideas off. Take care and see you next time 😊

I wonder if Mr cat had a friendship with your mom too? He seems so comfortable in the house and very entitled lol, he's like "you're late for my meal"! The cards I would maybe take with me, have a look at them at my own place, when I'm in the mood and I would keep the ones that mean something and recycle the rest. Maybe put them at a buynothing group, just in case somebody could use them (although these groups are very inviting to hoarders so not sure if the stuff they take they actually use or if they just feed the disorder). I wish the guy that was going to buy the truck had come but oh well, maybe next time. For the smaller things, I would maybe consider donating, selling takes a lot of time and work and you are dealing with a lot to begin with. Try to sell the bigger stuff, like furniture etc and maybe accept that it may not be worth the trouble to take photos, write descriptions, possibly ship items in order to make some money. I did that for a while and now I'm just donating, which is not that easy but it's a lot easier than selling. It would be great if you could come back with a friend or relative that would help you get unstuck when your mind starts to freeze and doesn't want to make more decisions. It's great to see you smile though, Mr cat is certainly bringing it out of you. He's pretty cute to be fair!
Ps: there is a group on fb called Hoarding/Cluttering Support Group. It's a safe space and they have a lot of good information. Perhaps you can ask some questions about the logistics of it all. You can post anonymously if you prefer. They are very respectful and there is a lot of cumulative wisdom from both hoarders themselves and people who deal with family members who hoard.

Here is a crazy idea. Rent a large storage locker in the town where you live and then hire people to take everything there. That way you would not be traveling back and forth leaving your cat. You could check resources in your area and organize and sell at your leisure. Would save wear and tear on you and your car. And maybe rethink trying to sell books, quilt materials, etc and just donate them. Would take a load off your mind (and life).

    • @chickabiddies
      @chickabiddies  7 месяцев назад +4

I have thought about that. I would need at least (4) 20x20 storage spaces which rent for $250/month each. So I would be paying $1,000/month for storage which adds up fast if I don't sell things right away. Not to mention transportation of the stuff to the storage lockers, another $500 - $1000 for a moving truck and hired labor. Too expensive for me.

Pull out a few special cards you gave her and your dad gave her and toss the rest. Why don’t you have a garage sale specifically for books. $1 paperback, $2 hardback. Take was doesn’t sell to donation. I’d do same with all the quilting stuff. Theme based garage sales.

If there is a bigger city nearby there may a larger library that might be interested in the books for their booksale, or maybe a used bookstore or two that might take at least some of the books. I worked at our library and we took donations, weeded through them for what to keep, and had two book sales every year with the proceeds going to various library projects. Good luck.

As for your mom’s cards-perhaps you can read some and keep a couple of them that are super special? Is there a local school near by? I am wondering if an art teacher could use them for collages? If not, it’s okay that you recycle them. These cards served their purpose which was to bring some joy to your mom. I think it’s ok to let them go if you can’t find them a home.

Regarding the greeting cards, yes, people do buy old cards and use them for other craft projects. I think that if it were me in your position, I would save one of each card that has each parents' signature or handwriting sample, and then just sell the others as a lot. When you do sell them, make sure you mention the years they are from. They are going to be more attractive to people based on their era. (Some people only buy certain eras.)

HI!!! First off, buy some inexpensive folding tables. You'll need them for the estate sale also. Have a driveway sale of just the books. 1 or 2$ for the hardbacks, .50¢ or 1$ for the paperbacks. Advertise it on marketplace. Just do it for a single day for a few hours so it doesn't tax you too much. Even if you don't sell much, maybe you'll sell enough to just leave them for the estate sale. Breathe! It's all a bunch of firsts for you. You're doing well given your circumstances.

@@chickabiddies you could always post some positive affirmations around your moms home for inspiration and guidance. You are taking on a very emotional and overwhelming task. You are doing really well, considering you haven’t had someone there to support you, and your heart is n two places at the same time, at your residence and your mom’s home. It would be great but not realistic to give everything the perfect home and receive the dollar value of all your mom has collected, however something’s like the cards need to go in the trash if the don’t have sentimental meaning for you. After my husband’s death I was able to let go of many things immediately. However there were things that I held on to for several years until I realized the no longer added value to my life and they were just taking up space. So a clean sweep- is something that may take more time. Be patient with what you are processing. 🙏🕊️🌸

If you are a book reader, you could save a box or two of books you think people would read, and go on "paper back swap" and exchange them for books you would read! I believe you only pay for the shipping of the book you SEND and you will get your choice of book for free because the sender will pay for it. It will give you a sense of "gifting" to people who would WANT those books(since they chose them) and you will get books YOU want instead! It's a win win situation, and I think it is fun if you live books or just have some books in mind that you have wanted to read! 😊

Getting rid of the books should make a big dent. Maybe the next step is to research as many quilters groups as you can find and get some advice from them as to where you can sell quilting stuff in bulk. Also Google quilting supplies as if you were interested in buying, this should lead you to places where you can sell. It would free up SO much room if you could shift all of the material and supplies.

See about leaving them at local bookstores, libraries, churches. Ask if they would mind giving them out. Do it a week or 2 before the sale. You could do something for sewing, crafts, kitchen products, etc. What doesn't go donate.

Great about the van, now you know it gets into the hands of someone who will really appreciate and love it.
About cats. Yur cat can cope with enought food and water for two days but mister Cat... If you keep feeding him when you get to your mothers house, letting him in and petting him you need to be fully responsible for him to. Keep him and bring him home to or take him to someone who ill love and care for him every day. It´s not fair to let him in and get food ust the days you are there and bo out on his own other days.
If he has an owner you shouldn´t keep feeding him since he will get back to you over and over again, getting stray from his home.
I think ou need a plan and a list to tick of. Lok here in the comments, there is ppl offer to help 🙂, let them. ❤
