HI Miriam! I've been teaching myself to paint the last 2 years and have logged well over 20 hours a week watching oil painting tutorials/ drawing. You have hands down the best portrait videos I've seen. Your information is priceless. I'm about to put all of the information I've learned into a portrait this week. Normally, I'm excited yet super fearful of messing it up. That fear is completely gone, and I just want to paint 24/7. This is the first time in my practice I've ever felt that way. I hope your channel gets the exposure it deserves. I will def share your channel with my art community.
Such a simple explanation of some pretty difficult painting. You have taught me more in this short clip than most. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your learning with us. Greatly appreciated.
The whole video was awesome. Again. But the use of the 'color picker' to explain saturation was soo helpful. Thank you! Again you create the best videos 🤙
Great Videos !! Great Content !! I am watching all your videos , you have a great way of relaying information in an easy and understandable way ! You are a natural born teacher and your love of painting shows ! Keep up the Great Videos !! 💯❤
Miriam! I´m glad that YT put one of your videos into my feed - so now I can learn from you and have fun watching your content. Your paintings are so beautiful, I love your brushwork and the colors you lay inn!! Also it's a tight design!! COngratulations!! I see that you enjoy making your videos, which makes even special for us appreciate them! If I could give a tip about lighting... (the one you use for your video). It´s about the fill light. The one that you are using it´s kind half of the ratio in comparison to the key (the strongest and upper one). The ratios could be wider. Meaning that the fill could be three to four times weaker. And about lighting, the amount is a crazy thing. If you want to make a ratio 1:3 it´s kind having one bulb versus 4 bulbs... LoL! Anyway, if you use a white polystyrene foam board, would be enough to bounce light back and fill the shadows on your face. Just place it right under the frame and you are good to go! Cheers from Brazil!! If you decrease the fill, your face would look more like a painterly shadows, will create more depth... But not that crazy Caravaggio BLACK shadows! LoL!
@@Miriamhoffmann LoL!! I talk too much... Thus making my explanations confusing... Fill light weak. Many times weaker. The fill light function is Just to brighten UP The shadows a little bit, not kill them. As I said earlier, you can experiment with a white board, to reflect / bounce light back into The shadows. Its not mandatory to have a phisical Second/fill light, as long as It has a device to bounce light naturally, as a photography reflector, a bright wall... When you put a Key/main light UP&front of The subject, and put a reflector under, This setup is called "clamshell light". If you put on Google "clamshell light setup" you Will get a better undersranding where to positioning things. And The best is: its inexpensive. A white foam board costs some cents? If you have any futther doubt Just aske me and I Will be Glad to help you!! 😊
I’ve very luckily always been comfortable with color mixing-my problem is choosing the right color to mix 😅 I’m horrible at that. I always want to go crazy with colors but I am not skilled enough yet so my paintings look insane. This video is so good-thank you so much! You’re style is gorgeous but these breakdowns are much simpler and more realistic and I think part of my problem is that I’ve been watching highly stylized artists painting fully in their style-I need to get these fundamentals you’re showing first before I can start adding in pure purples, reds, and blues
I’m struggling sooo much - I might just revert to acrylic which seems much kinder. I’m trying to paint a portrait of my mom and I initially made the shadows quite brown so with a lot of hue and then it just looked like a blackface fiasco. So then I tried to cool everything down and now there’s a zombie vibe - very muddy. She still looks much darker than her skin tone in-spite of the colour matching compare - her portrait shadows are probably lighter than her actual skin tone. I’ve let it dry a bit and wanna try increase contrast so will try to focus on brighter highlights today
Hi! Thanks so much! I'm new to oil painting and portraiture. I this the same color and brand with the funny name: Old Holland Classic 0il Color - Rose Dore Madder Lake Antique Extra? Thanks
You’re welcome!! So I don’t want to say *always* because that’s a strong word and I’m sure there’s plenty of cases where it isn’t, BUT I have personally never run into a situation where the shadows were less saturated 🥰
I can find India yellow-Brown lake extra, Indian yellow-green lake extra, and Indian yellow-orange lake extra. Which one are you using? The orange or brown? Thank you for your information. I'm really loving your videos. I've subscribed.
Hello Miriam, greetings from Spain, could you share the nomenclature of the color KRAPLAK ROSE?, to know what pigment it is, I suspect it is a PR83 alizarin lacquer, greetings and thank you for your work.
Hi, I have a question about the brands of the paints you used. I can`t see it on the video because the tubes are so small. I m interested in the opera pink and the vermillion red, because not every brand has them. Thank you for your super video and greetings from Germany
Greetings!! The luminous opera is by Holbein. It’s actually a water soluble oil that can be used as and mixed with regular oil paints and mediums. The vermillion is from Old Holland, but sometimes I opt for a less expensive vermillion- whatever I can get. Hope that helps!!

Thank you so much! So… fill light stronger? Or lighter? I need it in very simple terms lol. I really appreciate the advice!

Your art is so hypnotizing, I can't stop looking at them❤
I just found your channel. Great tips! I paint with acrylic not oils but I still find your videos very helpful! Thanks!
This was great! I'm always on the lookout for different approaches to this "problem". And your work is sublime. Subbed!
Awesome, thank you! Glad you found it helpful!
Holding the pallet with one hand and mixing it with the other is so chaotic I love it
🤣🤣 all about the chaos over here 😊😊
Thanks for the fabulous explanation on skin tones. I really enjoying hearing about high saturation within the shadow.
So glad you found it helpful!!
Your content is just amazing, Miriam! Thank you so much for sharing : D you deserve MUCH MORE exposure and following and I know you'll get there.

These videos are so incredibly helpful ❤ Thank you SO much!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
The Kraplak Rose is Rose Dore Madder Lake Antique Extra (B172) from Old Holland.
Thank you for that information as I just spent thirty minutes trying to find Kraplak. Does she use mostly use Holland paints?
@@vickicarol1733 It took me some time as well to figure it out 🙈 I think in another video she does say she mostly uses Old Holland yes.
Ahh! This is so interesting! Im about to start my first fogure painting class and this will be such a headstart

Hi!! Yep!! It is!! 🥰
brill thank you
Thanks for the great tips! Are the shadows always more saturated than the light?

Hi Miriam! What Cadmium orange do you use? It seems like there’s a lot of variations.
when you say Brown means Burnt Umber?
