I think the same! and you are so right about the "proportions 100% correct" not being so important! It was I´ve been thinking all this time as an sculptor- Amazing content @Miriamhoffmann please keep it up!
This is one of the most useful videos I've ever seen about proportions! Very well explained and laid out. The concept of gravity (should say "graphical" gravity) was new to me and it's brilliant! Thank you for sharing!
I have struggling to draw faces in an organic way. I kept looking at digital art tutorials in vain. I can’t believe the amount of useful information you have given in a single video. You have changed my life. I love drawing with chaos and struggled to control it. You have shared such amazing techniques that my heart is beating so fast trying to turn on my drawing tablet to try them out
I am so bad at proportions. In addition, I don't have a good grasp of line work. There aren't lines there, my brain doesn't want to put lines there. There are different colors. This has made things really hard for a long time. This is so incredibly helpful. Thank you so much.
Miriam I always enjoy your videos, I’ve got to disagree in the proportions, haha I care a lot about them, and notice them a lot, for me if I’m doing a portrait for a client, proportions have to be spot on, otherwise I just gave them plastic surgery. I understand your style is a lot more expressive and modern but for portrait painters I think they are super important. But I do agree that they are not the only thing that matters
Totally valid! This method isn’t for anyone. That’s why I included the part about if 100% accuracy is your main goal (for example- working on a commission) then you’d probably be best served skipping this video 🥰. My goal with portraiture is always to achieve likeness and capture spirit, not necessarily create an exact copy. These methods let me do that. If I was painting a commission and needed to get everything 100% spot on, I definitely would take a different approach ( like use a projector or do a transfer). So I totally get where you’re coming from. All just depends on what your end goals are!
You're an excellent artist!!! Even though i do digital painting (I wish i could do it physically but I dont have enough space and I'm financially strict) i still follow your tutorials on youtube while painting on my tablet ^^ they're really nice and the marble trick actually helped me!!! Thank you! I'll finally be able to study my favourite artists next week at the museum for free, I'll be sure to use your tricks when possible!!!!
Yet again this is timely for me. Graduate residency just ended, and the majority of comments about my work had to do with letting go of the concern for realism/accuracy at all costs and not being afraid to distort the forms if it looks better. Thanks again!
I’m not an oil painter but your videos are so helpful! Outside of art school, I don’t think anyone else really talks about these kinds of things, so thank you 🙏🏻
Damn! You are like the perfect teacher :) This is a hugely informative video. Again! Your words from 16:49-17:20 are exactly what we need to hear :) The effort you put into these videos is very much appreciated. Cheers Miriam.
I absolutely love your videos…. Seeing you talk, your voice just makes me happy…. From your instagram stories I realized you have 9.5 k followers and i am thinking whattt!!! Everyone who understands are or doesn’t should be here watching your videos….. Thankyouuuu for being this amazing!!!!
Amazing video! and you are so right about the "proportions 100% correct" not being so important! It was I´ve been thinking all this time as an sculptor- Amazing content @Miriamhoffmann please keep it up!
This is such a great video! I've always used guidelines to get better accuracy as my paintings always look way off without them, and I never had the patience whenever I try to paint without them. I love the many tips you gave here and I feel like I'm more confident to try again without guidelines and be more patient and to trust the process!
Thank you so much!! It’s been awhile but your video popped up in my notifications and I figured I should check it out and once again I am amazed. Your tutorials and videos in general are always so high quality and in depth and they help me so much with my pursuit in painting that I cannot thank you enough and to keep making these videos because they truly are an inspiration to me and hopefully many people!!! 💕💕☺️
Good tips! I'd gotten to thinking I'm pretty good, then a week ago, I simply could not get a head right. It ain't like riding a bicycle. (I'm definitely buying the idea that Caravaggio used a camera obscura or lucida, but that still doesn't explain how a hard-drinking thug could come out of nowhere and handle light and dark and paint the way he did.)
If you dong mjnd mm e asking i find your work touching and moving a b d beautifully executed,is the subject mattee you do popular in sales.?they are magic
Thank you so much! It’s a trade off any time your subject matter is polarizing. The pool of people who may want to purchase is smaller than the general audience, but it also means my pool of competition is smaller. 🥰🤘🏼
Literally the most helpful artist I've ever encountered.
That’s the best compliment ever! Thanks for watching!
I agree. Very pleasant presentation. What is her Family name? I'd like to look up her work.

The balloon and marble thing blew my mind, I’m 100% going to apply this to my next project
So glad you found it helpful!
That was an excellent tutorial. Wish I seen this 10 year ago.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching 🥰
Totally agree, the balloon / marble concept is so simple in explanation but so powerful in execution.
What a wonderful teacher
You are officially my new favorite creator ❤
This is God sent! 🥰 I love painting but I hate drawing!
Haha same!!!
So helpful! The marble and balloon ideas are such great tools to use… will definitely start considering these as I work on portraits

Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching!
Marbles and Balloons! Cool!
YES!!!!
Freshness. Kaos.
I can relate.
Love your videos! Great explanations. By chance did you use chat GPT to script these videos? Very thorough.
Can you please make a video on proportions from imagination without reference?
I wish my art teachers taught me this! I waste so much time sketching proportions and still not working!

I don't sketch either! I like to just jump in!
Yes art is peaceful yet stressful lol
Haha. Gotta keep people on their toes 🤣
you could have cosen a better looking reference...
Good god agreed. Her painting subjects are hideous.
Miriam, enter Islam.and success
Miriam: I love your voice, personality and teaching style. But-I absolutely despise your choice of subjects. Like, every painting churns my stomach.
