    In the comments on my first Stihl 261 vs Husqvarna 550 xp mark 2 video, a lot of people said the test wasn't fair and that I should run a yellow (full chisel) chain on the MS261. My intent on that video was to run both saws as I received them from the dealers - stock. However, I have listened to the people, and today we're running the MS 261 vs 550xp Mark 2 again.
    This time the Stihl ms261 will run a Stihl yellow chain while we'll keep the Husqvarna x cut chain on the 550 mark II. This should give the Stihl chainsaw a slight advantage since the yellow chain is full chisel and the xcut chain is semi chisel. (Semi chisel vs full chisel.). Let's run both of these saws side-by-side so you can see the difference for yourself!
    I really like both of these chainsaws. You may have seen my reviews on them (linked below). Actually, I love the stihl ms 261 c-m and the 550xp so much, that I couldn't decide between them! That's why I have both. I coughed up my own money for both of these chainsaws, and actually, when I watched the footage and timed them, I was surprised at the result.

      Can you even tell a difference between the 545 and 550 when using them? I was buying a 550 but my dealer talked me into the 545. He said they were both pretty much identical save for the programming in the carb. The 545 runs at slightly less rpm but still well above the torque curve. He maintained that this would actually help the life of the saw. And it was $70 less. I didn’t really care about the price difference but when it comes down to it I didn’t think I would be able to tell a difference between them in my humble homestead firewood cutting needs but would definitely appreciate any longevity there may be.

    Another thing to note is that the Husqvarna X-cut is a narrow kerf set up. I run Stihl 33RS chains exclusively on my 372xp but on a saw that uses .325 like my 346xp, the x-cut sp33g is the absolute best set up in my opinion. Of course everything is relative to the needs of the individual behind the saw in every situation.

    great vid, i got both. the narrow kerf skip tooth will have much less drag in the wood, for wood we use skip tooth because of that, for limbing we use full comp because they're less (grabby). i think the stihl is a bit tougher saw, like if you drop it from a tree,

    Hello! I need detailed impressions of the 550xp mark 2 and the stihl ms 261 without the mtronic. I have to settle on one of the two. I've read quite a bit about them, but mostly initial impressions and dry information. The saw will be used primarily in the yard for cutting hardwood firewood. I will be glad if you share which of the two models is better. Which of the two models will create more joy than nerves. Which is more long-lasting and hassle-free, overall. Not primarily aimed at cutting speed. Looking for comfort and reliability on the part of the machine. To predispose to a feeling of safe and secure work, without being extreme, if you understand me. Naturally, if it contains all of these together, it's even better. 😊 Let anyone who has reasonably extended experience with the 550xp mark2 and ms261 share their extensive views on them. As well as any pressing issues to fix or recommended changes to the machine related to its optimization. Greetings!

    I’d say the only thing left to do is a longevity test on both saws. I own a 261 and I was really on the fence which saw to buy. Reason I chose the 261 was because the dealer was 10 mins from my house. That dealer is also a Husqvarna dealer but don’t sell husqvarna saws. When I asked why they said Husqvarna are junk. I’ve been seeing a lot of problems with the 550 and I was going to buy one this year but decided against it now because I don’t want to buy something that’s might not last long. I’ve even talked to that dealer and others in my area and they told me the 5 series husqvarna saws are problematic and not worth buying. Even some husky fans told me the same. They will only buy 3 series saws. I did just buy my dad a brand new 592 and that saw got a problem right out of the box. Needs to go to the dealer now to figure it out. I think their quality has gone down hill lately on what I seen on facebook groups and taking to people about them. I really hope they can get their stuff together to give Stihl some better competition. After you get a couple hundred hours on both saws make a video on what problems you had if any.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  9 месяцев назад

      That's a good idea to do a longevity test. I've already run both saws for a few years and haven't run into any engine issues on either saw. I did have the bar stick on me a couple of times on the 550, but that might be my own fault for not greasing the bar enough.

  • @bradh74

    The .50 gauge is only the drive link that rides in the groove. The links on the chisel should be 3/8" another you tuber had this issue and broke out his micrometer lol. By the way if that saw isn't strong enough it'll cut faster with the skip tooth lol. You'll be there for a month and nobody will agree.

      @@cutnshine I kinda figured that, the full chisel stays pretty sharp even when I occasionally touch the ground with it. The two spare chains I bought haven't even been taken out of the boxes, and I still have my original chain that came on the saw with lots of life left after 20 full cords bucked into 16". I only took it off once when I hit a nail embedded in a tree that was once part of a fence line. When that happened I immediately put the spare chain on that came with the saw. Used that chain to finish the job that day then took it off and put the original chain back on and sharpened it. Excellent chain in my opinion . Wouldn't want anything else, other than maybe try a 16" bar to see the difference length makes.
      PS- don't knock the 271, it's a very good saw too. Never run a Stihl before I tried my cousin's 271 and was very impressed, but I had to do an upgrade to his for bragging rights, LOL...

    I just bought a 550xp mk2 this week. I bought it because I liked the feel and ergonomics vs the 261. Based on other comparisons I’ve seen between the two, with shorter bars, the 261 was usually faster. Maybe I was watching the wrong reviews. Anyway, I made the decision to buy the Husky for comfort and assumed that came at the cost of less power. I’m glad to see I may have got the best of both worlds.
    I don’t think you can go wrong with either of these saws. Both pack a ton of power into the 50cc package and both have great dealer support.

  • @dcvariousvids8082
    @dcvariousvids8082 2 года назад +5

    Among others, I have a Husky 550XP Mk2. I normally use an 18” bar but occasionally run on a 15” bar. A friend has the Stihl MS261 CM, he always runs on a 16” bar, (the way the Stihl mounts the bar, that equals a 15” bar). On my Huskys, I always use .058” Oregon 21LPX, which is full chisel. He always uses the .063” Stihl RS, which is also a full chisel. Both he and I file chains round ground, so pretty much equal cutting.
    Neither of us cut much softwood - both cutting mainly, oak, beech, black poplar, birch, hawthorn, blackthorn, cherry, etc. I’ve never really noticed much difference in the cut. Maybe if we were felling every hour, five days a week, there could be a difference but a few seconds here or there, it’s not a whole hill of beans. Takes more time selecting trees, posting safety signs & cordoning and clearing up. A few seconds per cut is nothing. The only real difference between the these two saw, seem to be run time on a tank. I’d say he gets perhaps 5mins. maximum more per tank, (though the 550’s tank holds 6% more) equal to a small tree and its processing. On bigger size trees, where you need a full tank or more per tree; time does not come into it. Don’t know the difference in cost, as he mixes his own fuel and I use Aspen2. I presume he’s paying far less per tank but I just prefer the alkylate fuels.
    If you’ve got this far, you have my sympathy. But in short, regardless of which of these saws you choose, I can’t see you being disappointed by their performance. In the end, I think it comes down to where you can get parts. If your nearest dealer does Stihl, you buy Stihl, if they do Husqvarna, you buy Husqvarna and if they do both, you’re lucky.

    I think something to consider is where these two saws make their max torque within the rpm range, Husky saws do cut fast when cutting cookies. I love Stihl saws but I do see the newer Husky saws produce max torque at a somewhat lower rpm than some of the newer Stihl saws. For this reason I think that is why you tend to see the smaller Husky saws cutting faster when loaded down on a decent size log. But all this said, performance isnt always everything, that 261 weighs a pound less than that Husky so over a days time you might find the Stihl wears you out less??

    Quick question does your (or anyone elses) have a metallic rattling sound coming from clutch. I bought one last week and have run about 2 tanks through it. Just wondering if its just the way it sounds or something may be wrong from the factory

  • @WolfinWolvesClothing713

    Gauge doesn't have any bearing on kerf thickness. It's just the thickness of the drivers that run down inside the bar. You can also get a stihl with a yellow chain stock, my 500i came with one. I personally think the husky is better for smaller stuff for It's higher chain speed. I think the stihl makes more torque for burying the bar. 6 one hand ,half dozen in the other. Using the same chain would be the closest comparison. Both brands are going to be set up differently from the factory. I have both and like both. 550xp,562xp,261cm,500i.

    Yellow chain does not signify full chisel, you can get yellow semi chisel. The yellow code defines standard chain whereas green signifies low kick back, Ie, extra bumpers in front of the depth gauges.

    i have a stihl 362, (20 inch bar, 3/8" chain)a 290,(18" bar, 3/8 chain) and a spanky-new husky 550 xp mk2. (18" bar, 3/8 chain) they are all great saws, similar weight and performance. What I learned from owning using these, is I like CHAINSAWS a lot, and if I could afford more chainsaws, I would buy them. The 550 XP is my newest saw, and i think husky hit it out of the park.

    Nice videos, I know the bar and chain you're talking about from Germany. I found it once and then lost it online. I ended up running a picco 7 pin rim, PS3 chain and a regular 3/8" 3003 008 8917 bar. Yes the bar width is a little close to the tooth spread but the guide gauge is right and I have had no issues tracking or sticking in cuts. Cuts like crazy!

    I looked at both of these saws side by side at a dealer yesterday. It looked like with the 18” bar the stihl had more effective cutting length than the husqvarna. Is that the case? How many drive links for the chains? If the stihl is pulling more teeth through the wood that could equate to more load on the engine and slow it a little.

    • @afellowinnewengland6142
      @afellowinnewengland6142 10 месяцев назад

      The Husky engine case design protrudes more than the Stihl with the same bar. You lose 1" of bar length with the husky. Just get a 20" bar on the Husky-it balances fine with it.

I cut about 4 chords/season over 8 years of beetle killed wood. The saw has been very reliable, on my third chain, keep the bar out of the ground! when cutting... I found the chain hard to profile and sharpen with the 3/16" file after some wear, so I use the 1/4" file and that made an improvement, and also watch the raker height.

    Again, honest and straightforward comparison. They are both good saws… Husqvarna is superior. I’ve run my 550XP next to buddy’s 261 often and we swap out. It’s very evident when you do this. What’s very revealing to me is that 3 small engine service centers I know in my area all favor Husky’s and they all say the same thing. Better quality, better design. They have no agenda, just opinions based on experience.
