- The unique styling of the S60 R hasn't aged as well as other European performance sedans, but they they're still probably easy to find cheap and fun as heck to drive.

Seeing 2000s cars as retro hits different
GOAT
My wife still has her 2007 Volvo S-40, she always wanted a Volvo. Ordered in Italy (I was in the military) built in Sweden, picked up in Denver, the only car we've driven from California to Florida. We chose that year due to Volvo being 50 years old so the accessories were 50% off. Passion Red, like this car, manual shift, all the goodies for accessories at the time and all for $23,999.00 thanks to military sales overseas. It's 16+ years old and still looks new due to always being garaged & still driven a few times a week.
My mom still has her 2008 S40 that she bought new. Just passed 250k kilometers this spring. This week it's being treated to a rust repair and full repaint. Can't wait to see the finished product.
I can’t tell you how many 5 cylinder Volvos I used to see rolling in with 200,000 miles or more.
@@EricFortuneJr. It's at 192,000+ as we have slowed down driving it since buying a new car. But the mechanic who works on Volvo said the way we take care of it, we won't have to worry about rebuilding the engine.
That’s a good jawn! Y’all have something so unique keep up the good work
Actually, the smaller Volvos, ( C30, V50 and 2nd gen S40 ) starting in 2003, were made in Gent Belgium, whilst the bigger Volvos, S60, V70, S80 and XC90, were made in Sweden.
Before 2003, the smaller Volvos like the Daf 66 badge swapped Volvo 66, Volvo bought into DAF in the 70:s, Volvo 340 \ 360 , Volvo 480, 440 and 460:s were made in the Netherlands, and so was the first gen S40 and V40, which was designed in a joint venture between Volvo and Mitsubishi, and was based on the Mitsubishi Carisma, and built in the same factory, and for the first time, a Dutch made Volvo was a serious contender .
After Ford bought Volvo in 1999, a new deal was made, and the 2003 S40 and V50, and also C30 were based on the first gen Ford Focus C-Max and Mazda 3 and built in Gent Belgium
........I still admire this car.
One of my absolute favourite sport sedans OF ALL TIME.
The wagon was nice
Same here! I currently still drive my 2008 XC-70, approaching 300K miles and still going. I'm getting ready to take her on a 3500+ mile round trip, it's the most comfortable road cruiser I've ever owned. Cheers!
Yes however turning radius is awful - had a 2005 through earlier this year
Way overrated
I bought an '04 V70R almost three years ago. And YES it's a manual!!!!! Fun car to drive!!!!
Iconic Volvo styling. I still see these driving around, but the R is rare. The performance specs aren't bad, especially the acceleration.
300 all wheel horsepower is really good tbh
@@kennorcott7074 I love Volvo classic cars
I had one as my first car got it really cheap lasted 100k miles of use before I sold it still my favorite car I every owned
Best thing about these older cars. NO TOUCHSCREENS!!!
I disagree with the statement above - the styling of this has aged like a fine wine.
agreed, i own an 07 s60r and a lot of people not in touch with the car world find it hard to believe my car is 16 years old
s60 from 2001 here, love the design, love that oldschool retro look.
Forever among the most perfect vehicles ever produced.
Volvo's kid hauling image was left behind with the introduction of the 850 T-5R in 1995, followed by the 850R starting in 1996! It was a blast to drive.
bought my 07 s60r 1.5 years ago and it’s been a blast. Will never sell this thing
hey kyle i found youuuuuu 😊
This was peak Volvo performance.
Volvo will never make something with this much fun ever again.
I was trying to see if I already left a comment on this video. If I did a oh well. I used to have an S 60 R, 2007. I loved it. Loved everything about it and didn’t have a single problem with it.
The last great decade for Volvo. Always loved the gen 1 S60.
Currently in the process of building mine. Working on fixing a vacuum leak. I def bought a lemon but I love my s60r and I’m gonna keep putting money into it until I feel like it’s built to what I want it to be.
how's it going lol i'm in the same position just a year behind got mine 2 months ago
I had an '05 Titanium Grey/Nordkap leather S60R that I loved! Modded it with full TME exhaust, TME springs, Bell FMIC, tune, larger turbo inlet pipe, and water injection. What a fun car! That 5 cylinder engine sounded great! Would probably still have it, were it not for an inattentive teen driver rear-ending it while it was at a stop and pushing it into the car in front.
how much power were you making? i currently have an 07 black sapphire over nordkap with the sport kit, and am looking for some suspension parts as well
@@bren.nan_ I had dyno'd AWD 253 @ wheels (Dynojet) after mods and 225 before. GT transmission. (edit: found actual numbers). Not tuned for meth, just used it for lowering intake temps (I live in SoCal).
I've always wanted one of these I5 turbo volvos, IMO one of the best sounding cars on the road. I heard one downtown with some sort of fancy looking loud exhaust and it sounded straight up like the quattro rally car. This with a 6 speed seems like it'd be so much fun.
Those gauges are just simply beautiful..... Wow
The styling hasn’t aged well? You must be kidding; it’s still looking very good with wide shoulders and the understated elegance. Inside being “screenless” translate being timeless as well.
There's definitely something about the subtle but throaty warbling sound of those old Volvo 5-cyl engines that gets you. A kind of mechanical character that modern cars miss. These engines also made it into an entirely different car - The mk2 Ford Focus RS! They are tunable engines that can take the miles too.
‘05 S60R was one of the best cars I’ve ever owned!
A great car that the masses could afford. It gave Volvo a sporting dynamic character that everyone loved to this day. Even more than the yellow brick 850 T-5Rs.
One of the very few cars in the World that had only in-line 5 cylinder engines, both petrol and diesel.
No other configuration was available.
I miss my S60R. Passion red, 06, GT, Atacama. Unique car
Miss my s60r fun car
I enjoy my 04 R. Best mod was the DO88 intercooler
I have a modified 05’ S60 and I love this car. Wish more people knew about it though!!
Wow! it was running with Evos and STI’s back then never knew
Amazing car. Owned a last year 2007 passion red fully loaded with m66
SPACEBALL: The Shifter
(the kids love this one)
Not to be contrarian (Volvos aren't even usually my style), but I honestly think this car's styling aged waaaay better than a lot of its contemporaries. Thinking about other mid-size luxury cars of the time. 2000-2004ish was a low point for the Germans in this category, the E90 3-series, W203 C-Class and B6 Audi A4 were all dreadfully dull to look at.
I'm not a huge euro fan, but these really have grown on me.
Wow this is genuinely fast. Im impressed Especially for the time period
Love love love love love these!!!
No mention of the world's worst turning circle, lol.
it’s worse than most 1/2 ton trucks and that’s not an exaggeration
After driving a mercedes with one of the best truning circles, switching to volvo was really a surprise.
My friends did the destination delivery package. Flew to Sweden. Drove it on vacation. Then to the shipping yard. Flew home. Then a month later the car was home in California. Good times.
I remember having a super crush on this car, especially the metallic mint green color in wagon form... quirky, fast and beautiful... ah well...
Love this friggin car! Looks soooooo good still
Love these retro reviews.
Still a cool car, almost 20 years later. Also... SPACEBALL SHIFTER!!!!
This is one of those ultra niche out of the early 2000s, that may be just on be the best with some tuning if you hit jackpot on a good running example one.
I wanted one of these so bad back in the day, but I was a broke college kid at the time.
I miss my S60R! Great car. Sold it with only 47K miles on it.
Hi, is there any particular fault of the car that prompted you to sell? There is a MT ‘06 at a dealer near me with 59k and I’m kinda smitten 😮
@ ‘06 was a great year.
Only sold mine to buy a house.
Make sure timing belt and water pump have been done and stay on top of all the maintenance and it will be a reliable fun car! Mine was the m66 manual too. Silver on tan with the factory aero package. My only wish is it was the wagon but no complaints.
@ ahh thank you for all that. I’ve had a couple Saabs and always stuck to their scheduled maintenance. I’ve never owned a Volvo, but this one seems very Saab-adjacent🙂
Still have mine. Sitting at 305000mi ready for engine number four 😢 my favorite caR ever made will not let it go
Wow what a sleeper ❤..
Crazy that the 2000s are retro now
Styling aged better than they could have ever imagined
I love how HD the video quality is considering it's over 20 years old!!! Where did these even get posted back then? Your website? A TV channel? lol. It was pre-RUclips...
I love this Volvo S60R, Volvo classic cars is my favorites
I have this exact car, red 2004 6-speed s60r and before that a red 2004 auto v70r. The s60 is my daily and a joy to drive but the the turning radius on both cars is dreadful 😅
When I was in college, my 97 850 GLT was backed into and was totaled. I test drove a 2004 S60 R. It was blue which looked beautiful. My only issue was that when I sat in it, it felt almost the exact same as my 850. The leather was worn in the same ways and it didn’t feel like a modern car. It drove well but I ended up going with a 2006 Acura TL. Though the TL wasn’t as heavy of a performer, it looked great and felt very modern. The deciding factor was remembering how much it was to maintain my Volvo. Anything and everything was more expensive in that car. I’ll always have a soft spot for Volvo.
So Clean So Smooth
Does the S60 R have same awful battleship-like turning radius of regular S60? I have driven my friends S60 and it is good car for straight, long roads. Stable on road and corners, plenty of acceleration even in basic incarnation. Great fuel economy if driven carefully. The seats are comfortable but too hard for my taste. Cons are the turning radius, lack of standart DIN audio system, gear shifter is precise but lacks physical feeling to it.
I need to get back in the market for one of these. If I can find a passion red or flash green one then I’m on it
there's a passion red for sale in arizona currently, it's an 04 with gobi interior
These sound good with a more open exhaust. Too bad they understeer like a loaded Freightliner, good looking cars though.
The spaceball !!!!
miss this car.
I have a couple S60's from that generation (bought new and still drive today - an '01 2.4T and '08 T5), MotorWeek was being VERY generous in saying the back seat was good for the average adult. They are TINY. Hard to get into with the sloped roof and almost no leg room.
Yes, beautiful car to be sure.
Volvo nation unite
Does anyone know why this video looks different, like ACTUAL video, not fluffy internet video? I mean I really feel like I watching TV when I watch this... something with the resolution and framerate.
All of our Retro Reviews have to be converted from tape to digital and we do so in the highest quality available.
I miss my 2005 V70R with M66 transmission.
I have a 1998 Volvo s70 glt with 148,000 miles on it runs and drives like new.
That is the goofiest looking shifter I've ever seen
Its called Volvo Space Ball.
spaceballlll
classic spaceball
I wish I owned the wagon! 😪👍
that car deserved a better drivetrain and electronics, the platform was so good, not the rest
These cars are so overhyped
i wish the awd was better and rwd based
I never understood what torque was until I drove the s5 turbo version.
You could smoke people under 3k all day
High and low beam achieved by the headlights mechanically moving up and down.....oh boy,why do i have one high and one low beam?....lol.
RIP Volvo.
Owned by the Chinese now.... Sad SAAB is gone😢
My eye is always open just incase I spot a low milage S60R or V70R.
or be dumb like me and buy one with 150k miles lol. gonna hit 170k with it soon and i don’t regret a thing
All hail the Volvo shifter orb
Carro lindo como esse na cor vermelha valeu amigo 👍😁👍
A sensação de deriji volvo é muito sensacional carro lindo 😁👍
Cool car
Good luck finding one with manual transmission, and in good condition at a reasonable price.
Do 2006-2011 Lexus GS
Sold! I need to order my brand new S60R.. I wonder if Volvo would be intrested to build me one. :)
The only right color combination for this car is Volvo Flash Green plus orange interior.
I like my c70,not 300 hp but can get up hp,and yes I do slolum up to 80mph!!
The 1997 Volvo C70 T5 did 14.1 seconds the 1/4 of mile.
Si much faster than this model.
Video : 1997 C70 T5 Motorweek
Best Volvo ever! (In 2023 Volvo's are glorified motorized vacuum cleaners)
Spaceball!
@ 1:30 just straight pipe the heck out this car you won't be disappointed...
V70R is still great looking would love to own one
The only things wrong with the Ford era Volvos are the Ford parts.
Good car. Underrated
2:32 just look at that!
You wont get that in many 'sports' cars.
Adaptive/adjustable suspension? The last generation Civic Si had adaptive dampers. That's nothing special.
@@sleeksilver I'm not talking about the tech, rather how it results in handling, in a relatively heavier car. That handling is very good.
@@sleeksilver20 years ago when the R debuted it was the cheapest car with adaptive dampers. different times
If it was in good condition and it's engine and transmission was in good shape? Yeah I'd take 1 in a second.
A BOX on wheels.. .its like wearing a suit from the DOLLAR STORE
Back when I was an obnoxious teen, I used to call this brand "V*lv*".
BALL SHIFTER! 👁️👄👁️
Now FIRM UP YOUR SHOCKS and PLASTI-DIP MY SHAME.
In 2010 my brother bought one of these used from the local Volvo dealership. That same year I bought a used 99 Camaro SS. He used to make fun of my "trailer park muscle car." Over the next 4 yrs he dumped about $6k into this car for repairs. He ended up trading it in bc it was so unreliable & so expensive to repair. Meanwhile I still own my 99 Camaro SS. The only things that have broken/failed in the last 13 yrs are the windshield wiper motor, the alternator, & the original factory clutch. My car has almost 200k mi. My brother's Volvo didn't even have 100k. Moral of the story...get a Camaro. It'll be a lot more reliable & way cheaper to repair.
Only problem is I had a 02 SS Camaro and it was fun, But I began to notice that people would point and laugh and make fun of me while I was out driving it. Loved the car but it just didn't fit my mindset. Now if I went out and bought a mullet wig to put on then it might have been more fun. The Volvo is a much better car in the end.
I miss when Volvo made fun cars
They still do, faster and better handling than this.
Volvo is now owned by the Chinese, no disrepect to them, but fun in automotive and Chinese aren't synonymous, not as yet, long way to go.
@@KenanTurkiye Polestar would like to have a word with you.
@@KenanTurkiye the only thing chinese about volvos are the money and some manufacturing. All development is still done in house in Sweden, still very much a Swedish car.
@@sleeksilver Tell Polestar to first fix their design of their SUV's and change their pricing and payment options,
only after all that I may be able to fit them into a meeting. ;)
The announcer sounds like he's hiding from something in the beginning.
Nobody trusted volvo since its earlier era maybe thats why there sells par with saab
Spaceball shifter 😂
Yes but the 1997 Volvo C70 T5 was faster 1/4 Mile of 14.1 seconds
"The unique styling of the S60 R hasn't aged as well as other European performance sedans"
I'm sorry, what?
Sleeper
Sadly, no longer owned by the Swedish or Americans.
