Nancy, I've just attached my first two blocks. I won't lie; I was scared to death I was going to ruin this quilt for my first grandson, but these two blocks sewn together have restored my confidence. I'm ready to do the last two. Then onto the rows...Thanks for such excellent tutorials.
That backing fabric was just perfect! You really can't see the piecing without being 4 inches away. Great pick. Thank you for sharing all of your talents.
Oh My Gosh, thank you for this video. I never would have thought to glue base the back prior to sewing.. what a time saver. Plus my fingers and hands thank you too! (I have arthritis & have great difficulty hand sewing). Take care and God Bless, Chris-Raleigh NC
Nancy I have met you before Iwas at the Quilters Guild meeting in Wyoming at the Church. I also met you and you helped me at the store to buy fabric for my star quilt. I was so happy to see you have a channel I now know where I will be when not sewing.
I’m a little late to this game (!) but am trying this technique for the first time. My first QAYG. I have Beth Donaldson’s book, Block by Block, but could not grasp her process of attaching the blocks into rows - even with illustrations. It was very confusing and seemed backwards. Then I happened upon Nancy’s GAYG video series and her clear instructions were a godsend! I followed each video very carefully, and after completing the block quilting, being careful not to quilt the specified sashings, I attached the blocks into rows. However, when trying to then attach the rows together I realized that something in the video instructions wasn’t quite right as part of the sashings were sewn down (during block attachment) making the connection of rows impossible. So, I went back to the book and reread over and over the confusing instructions. Finally I created a few mini blocks to try and follow Beth’s instructions, and once finally successful, realized there was indeed a few key instructions missing from Nancy’s video! :-( All this to say that you really need the book for attaching the blocks together correctly. It would be impossible for me to explain. But everything else about Nancy’s videos seems to be correct and she is an excellent teacher! I’m just trying to save someone else from having to figure out what to unstitch in order to assemble. It was quite the process!
Thanks!! I did do a Q&A video and did explain what I missed on the first video - the problem is I did it as a small part of another video and I can't remember which one :( - I will put it on the list of things to do soon!
I'm never going to have room for a long arm and I've wanted to try QAYG for a while now. Even with videos and books, I haven't gathered the courage. You're giving me the confidence to try a small table runner. Wish me Luck!
This is a brilliant series. I hope you will consider doing another QAYG series. I'd love to see your techniques for putting together a bunch of smaller blocks. Thanks for this great instruction.
Nancy you are my hero...I love the way you explain everything very clearly.... I am going to do a reversible tshirt quilt for someone and I will be doing sashing...Thank you for your help...
Thank you for the tutorial. I have the book, but didn't really understand the concept. You made the QAYG so very easy to understand. Again Thank You!!!!!
I’ve been glued to your tutorials, but got lost somewhere. Once I make my block, it looks like I attach the sashings as instructed before sandwiching and quilting?
Since I do not have a long arm, I am loving this technique and am anxious to try this! Thank you! But I do have a question, as my Google technique is not very good. Could you please tell me what fabric this is that you used for the backing of these blocks. I love it, and would really want to find some. Thanks again for the great instructions!
For these blocks i was using a Moda Grunge fabric - there are literally 100's of colors/designs and i think i have owned 4 or 5 different "whites" so there is tons to choose from. Nancy
@@QuiltingWithNancy Thank you for your response. But the fabric in question is the blue, yellow and black one. Flowers and dragon flies. So busy I love it! But as for grunge?... I missed that part. Good to know!
it says Mike Stone I am Nancy Stone. I have always loved your work and teaching techniques. Are you still at the store or do you won firesidequilts. I am looking for a new place to buy supplies.
I am still teaching at Smith-Owen Sewing Center in Grand Rapids. Firsesidequilts.com is owned by a friend of mine and she carries all the supplies that I love to use.
Hi Jeanne - I'm not sure what you mean? Can you fold over the edges onto freezer paper with the glue - yes but you do need to get the freezer paper out - I would recommend that you use a cut away stabilizer instead of the FP so you don't have to take it out - Hope this helps? - Nancy
I noticed that you attached #3 and #4 blocks together and sewed all the way down. what do you do if you have more than 2 rows? If blocks 1 and 2 are sewn together how to you pull the batting and backing back to attach the rows?
I'm really loving this method of qay-go, I wanted a method that uses wide dashing fir ages. I wish you had a shown how to join block one and two as well as I'm a little confused, as mine don't look the same as yours, when I come to join the rows. Any help would be gratefully received.
I dont understand y there is so much trimming with quilters ? Iv cn quilters trim retrim & trim again while sewing pieces 2gethet. I'm no professional but I cut a block 1c & it works out fine. So much matiral is wasted.
Hi - the "black" piece is the fusible interfacing that will hold the batting together through washings. The glue is water soluble and will go away when washed. With out the interfacing to hold the batting they will separate when the quilt is washed - hope that makes since :)

Nancy I did your other method, but this is superior. Due to my shoulder, I do the QAYG method. This rocks, thanks Nancy.

I got my copy with the tan cover off of eBay and it looks almost new. I lucked out 😀
This is something I have to try!

Each block has specific slashing added - some you can quilt now and others you wait until the blocks are attached to their neighbor.
Thank you! I have wanted to learn how to do this.

I know you have probably said before but...... Do you pre-shrink fabric before piecing, quilting, and assembling the QAG blocks?
Hi Debra, I do not - I just don't have the time and find for me and my quilts it's not necessary :) - Nancy
Can you use water soluble glue on freezer paper to appliqué?

You would tread rows 2 like you did row 1. In my quilt the second row was the last row.
I am curious are quilt as you go quilts allowed in quilt shows?
Yes, and depending on how well it's executed you can even get a ribbon :)

I agree Sally May. Can't bear seeing all that batting and precious pieces going to waste. 😖😢
I'm not sure why you needed the black piece as seems you could just use glue? I am missing something.

how do you feel about clips rather than pins?
I use clips for bindings but not much more than that - I say use what works best for you ;)
