How to Make a Hit Movie in 2024 | Film Perfection

- Barbie is a new hit movie from Warner Bros starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling who is literally like me. Everybody knows Barbie from the Barbenheimer event with Oppenheimer, but how exactly did it turn this brand that nobody cares about into gold? It's bigger than Marvel and Fast & Furious and Mission Impossible and even Mario. What!? How!? Well, by making a smartly positioned movie that attracts modern audiences. In today's Film Perfection, let's see how Barbie does that and how we can do that too with our own movies, even if we don't have an automatically successful brand like Mario at our disposal.

My disappointment of not hearing Filmento's normal beautifully accented voice is immeasurable. My day is ruined.
Why is it different?
Agreed
He is sadly dead@@rushmore309
@@rushmore309He mentioned in the pinned comment that he’s burned out from doing everything.
So, he outsourced the voiceover, so he could keep writing and editing.
But, I think that’s a HUGE mistake. His voice is his brand. NOT his editing.
i understood why he would do it before the pinned comment. ive produced all sorts of content so I get it. but the voice and delivery are so uniquely him that this shit feels crazy without hearin him. i cant even get through it. imagine is jcs or dreading or even coffeeshouse crime changed the voices of who is doing the work? its jarring. sometimes it works and this change may work. other times it does not. his voice and accent were so perfect for his humor. unique combo with his editing and writing. he needs to train an AI or some shit hahaah
The thing I liked most about the original voice is that it fit the script. The accented monotony really drove home the constructive criticism narrative. With this voice, the critical, demeaning narrative doesn't hit the same.
exactly! as a guy who understands presentation he better understand it in this case lol
Man, I understand if the schedule gets overwhelming sometimes. Speaking for myself, your voice is a huge part of watching these videos. You are one of the best film-analyst youtubers on the platform and even if I know that you wrote the script, it just doesn't feel like you. I don't want to be demeaning towards anyone, but I couldn't tell if this new voice was AI text-to-speech or not. Could you not hire an editor instead, and just give them your old videos and say "do it like this"? It seems like the first staff member most youtubers hire is the editor. Your editing is fantastic, but I think a good editor could do virtually the same. Can't replace your voice though.
Filmento died, you'll get use to the new voice eventually
i will keep watching cause i love the content, but i agree, his voice adds more depth and personality
Yeah, I feel the same. I can understand the argument about the "monotone" voice but still, for me it's really part of the chanel and it doesn't feel the same with a different voice. Honestly, I would prefer a change in the editing style rather then changing the voice, IT is Filmento.
yeah, same. the voice is definitely one of the thing that adds personality to his videos.
Editing is the easiest thing to source out. Seriously!!!!
If you had outsourced the editing FIRST and not told anyone… I guarantee you… no one would’ve noticed or cared.
Your loyal fans come here for YOU, Filmento. Don’t worry about the clingers. They don’t matter.
Outsource the editing.
Don’t take away the one iconic thing we all come here for.
PLEASE.
Just not the same without Filip Mentos' voice narrating.
I can’t watch it
I totally agree
unfortunately, I agree too
Well he's dead. So it's what happened.
@@dddzfzI’ve been with Filip since his very first video. His videos were the only ones I faithfully watched end to end.
Until Cinemento.
It marked the first time I didn’t watch all the way through. This video marks number two.
Filip made a huge mistake outsourcing his BRAND (his iconic voice) rather than his editing (which no one cares about but him).
I think he should’ve asked his fan base what he could do to alleviate some of his pressure.
We are living in a world where Barbie is the most successful thing out right now.
Truly a Barbie girl in a Barbie world.
It’s a canon event.
Thanks to the communication
Life is plastic
What a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world
My favorite part was when Barbie broke the fourth wall to tell the audience "DOWN WITH THE PATRIARCHY"!! I broke down in tears
I never thought Barbie would become one of the highest grossing movies of the year when the first teaser trailer released.
What. When i saw the hommage to 2001: a space Odyssey, i knew this was gonna be a good one. What a baller move and what a baller intro for a movie
with all the marketing it was evident it was going to be popular.
It's never about good or bad movie, just marketing and being woke so traditional media also recommends you
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j The marketing will get people to see the movie during the first 2 weeks but after that, people talk and if the movie truly sucks, then it is going to drop in the following weeks. When a movie stays on top week by week for more than a month like Barbie, it's driven solely by word of mouth
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j Spot on.
i knew it would do well but not this well lol. i just assumed there were so many women of different generations that would go out to see it and sometimes twice and i was right about that. i looked at it like how boys and girls (manly boys)love the ninja turtles. just 30 plus years of brand recognition.
What can't be criticized is the people who worked on the film's communication, with great respect to them 😮

It wasn't "editing" ignored by the "cool kids" but FILMENTO!
They had their "One great scene" and he did his own.
THAT wasn't about "editing"...
I feel a little conflicted about using “irony” to make the movie interesting. As that’s true, it was the twist what made Barbie more interesting. But we have reached the point that we are irony poisoned and, at least me, are tired of the subversions and want something that is more genuine or not ashamed of what it is. Idk I feel conflicted.
do you really think that the movie is ashamed of what it is?
@@warsp1teHe seems to be conflicted about many things, including how to put that into words.
@@warsp1te Maybe not ashamed, but clearly critical of the cultural phenomenon it's based upon, and expresses this criticism through irony and subversion. Similar to what the new Snow White movie seems to be doing, based on statements by the lead actress. The intent seems to be subversive and critical of its own identity rather than just being genuinely happy about being what it is. Whether or not you think that's a good thing is up to you, but I think it's a pretty obvious observation to make.
@@tjarkschweizer I think "he" (melaniey does seem like more of a woman's name though but who knows) made his/her point quite clearly. And being conflicted is usually a good thing, it's a sign of capability for independent thought and questioning rather than just following a simple narrative of constantly confirming one's own biases.
The film is way past irony, and into post-irony territory.
I wouldn't be surprised if Beanie Babies, Furbies, Polly Pocket or Stretch Armstrong eventually receive their own feature films, based on Barbie and Lego Movie's success.
This is part of the problem though. The barbie movie actually had a story to tell. Unless those other brands have something interesting to say, they should stay where they are
Matel has already announced its own cinematic universe. I think Polly Pocket already has a director, but I don't remember what the others were. Regardless, these are all gonna bomb if they think they can get another success like Barbie without having a compelling story behind it.
Except Mattel will likely learn all the wrong lessons in adapting their other properties to movies following Barbie's success. Barbie has a story to tell and it was made by competent filmmakers all around it, as for others idk about it. I mean I casting Lily Collins as Polly Pocket is great but Lena Dunham directing it? They completely lost me on that
@@15Candlesi hope you're wrong because there's potential here. Either really good movies or really bad good movies
@@bluevanga30 But some of them aren't really necessary like an Uno Card or Magic 8 Ball or even Thomas and Tank Engine, all of which are going to be done in live action? Geez, Mattel better chill. As for Polly Pockets, like I said, I'm down for Lily Collins to be the character but they absolutely lost me having Lena Dunham as the filmmaker, seriously
I think that the dedication to the exagerated visuals of the characters and BarbieLand helped in making the movie into an event. Dresscode for the movie and such made it so people felt pulled in to watch the movie, regardless of expectations to play around by the writers or directors
Dude your voice is one of the many things that makes your channel unique, is it "the perfect voice" of course not but it gives your videos so much personality. I can't tell you how many jokes I've laughed at exclusively because of your unique delivery. These videos will truly miss something without it and I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I say we're happy to wait longer for videos if it means we keep your voice.
Plus they did such a good job with the production design and costumes, they really embraced the toy aspect to the story and comedy.
Your voice is one of the unique selling points of your channel... I'd go as far as to say it's essential. New things are sometimes good but please don't take the wrong message from any criticism of your voice. The lower tone and sarcastic nature of it is what kept me watching your channel all these years. In short, please do the voice.
Agreed, this now sounds like any other film critic channel.
I miss the old voice!! But the editing remains fantastic!
Professional editors could have taken over that aspect of his production and no one would’ve noticed.
His editing isn’t what makes this channel. His iconic voice is his brand.
It’s both
Don't worry, we love your voice Filmento! It may sound monotone but It's *your* voice and It's comfortable to listen to!
Dont worry? He was trying to take some of the workload off his shoulders lol

Filmento, I enjoyed hearing your voice. Your accent, tone, cadence and more made it feel like I was listening to an old friend. I understand the freedom having a new narrator grants you so I’ll try to keep an open mind but truth be told it won’t feel the same without your voice. However you decide to move forward you’ve still got my support
If you ask me it's because they hid what the film is actually about, so people went because 1: the joke of "oh sure, I'll watch a Barbie movie", and 2: they wanted to know what the movie actually was
Bait and switch and lie and obfuscate...
Sounds reasonable
So you're saying... basically they copied the original Matrix "no one can be told what the matrix is. They have to see it for themselves" aspect? :)

Its important for modern movies to include components that modern social media culture indulges in. Barbie definitely had the dress up and go to the movies vibe that moved culture
Why? I wanna escape these things, I don't want to be reminded of them. That's why most of them flop. Barbies success comes from it being geared towards women.
No it's not, I want to escape reality not be lectured about it.
If I wanted to hear a sermon I would go the mass.
There is also space for this kind of movies but meta commentary doesn't need to be present in every movie and TV show as it is right now
@lowdistortion a significant number of movies flop because people are more entertained by social media than they are whatever the movie has to say. When a movie flops it can still have life on social media because of memes that ridicule it. See: Morbius
Plus the Barbie selfie memes were so fun. 😊
No, that only dates the movie and makes it unwatchable if it misses the short life cycle of popular memes. Good movies are timeless.
If you intentionally want to date your movie, use 20 years old things to invoke childhood nostalgia in the main movie audience. Oh wait, that's what Hollywoood was doing in the last decade.

F. It's tough to fill in his shoes
We (his true fans) need to encourage Filip to outsource his editing… not abandon his brand. He is why we were drawn to this channel and it’s him that held us here all these years.
I read the theory that the writers of Matrix 4 intentionally sabotaged the movie to not have any more sequels, so it could be also be a case study. That being said, the new voice is fine, I feel it's a matter of getting used to. But this is the sad reality of Hollywood, it has become a place ruled by fear.
I don't care if it's one video per month or 1 video per 2 month, i like your voice.
Agreed. Outsource the editing. Produce less often. But, DON’T THROW AWAY THE BRAND!!! Now, his videos are just like everyone else’s.
Your voice was like the best ASMR for me while i am on bed or want to relax 😢😢😢
I think this is the first good comedy I see from Hollywood in over 20 years, and I think this is the reason it mostly works through generations and audiences.
People can of all ages can understand the silly and zany of the movie, even if 5 year olds will not get the Kubrick or Matchbox 20 references, it still works, the jokes still land (most of the times, unlike Adam Sandler or Kevin James movies - in which the jokes don't land most of the times). Plus I really felt the director/writer was invested in the story being told here (there was sincerity and heartfelt in the project), and this was not just another cog in the machine soulless product (we keep seeing over and over).
i like your monotone voices filmento i think its apart of what makes your vids good its the blunt voices

@@darrengordon-hill As long as he isn't putting swastikas on my feed, yeah
What sold me initially was the interesting trailer and the fact that Ryan chose to be in this project. He rarely picks stinkers. When you implement social topics in a film it helps showing both sides of an argument and having the audience lens be their focus. The whole film had a sense of dedication poured into it, the sets, the make up, the casting, the screenplay, the acting and the score was top notch.
I prefer Filmento classic voice
So does 88% of his audience (according to last year’s Filmento poll). I can’t believe he did this.
idk what the others are saying, I genuinely love your original voice. It's so captivating and I don't think its monotone at all. You say that your voice is monotone in your own dialect so in English its not that good either, I say that your voice sounds wonderful in English so I can only imagine how good it sounds in your own dialect. Your videos are such a treat, I save your videos just so that I can watch them later in the day and really appreciate them. And I'm not even a filmmaker or anything related! When Barbie and Ken were getting their first ever feature film in 2023, we didn’t expect it to do extremely well.
There were other Barbie movies and movies featuring Barbie and Ken before this one, including Toy Story 2 and 3, but Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie became the greatest Barbie movie of all time.
As for Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and all the other Barbies and Kens, they all did absolutely great portraying Mattel’s popular dolls as real people. Even the humans, like Gloria, Sasha, and the Mattel CEO and his crew were amazing additions to the star-studded cast.

There's no such thing as "modern audience", it's a made up excuse for failing movies and excessive political messaging.
People are the same as 100 years ago, or even 200 thousand years ago. There are few differences today compared tot he past:
- There are far more choices for entertainment, so it's harder to attract people.
- Movies are far more expensive, so they need a much larger audience to be profitable, which has a wide range of big consequences, and generally not positive.
- Politics infects everything. That's also a good excuse for making a bad movie, you can always blame the audience for being on the other side of the political spectrum.
It’s easy, you just lie in the marketing about what your product is offering. Bam instant money 👍🤷♂️
My man Filmento! I am here and subscribed very much because of your unique voice and pronounciation. Please dont change 🙏

The movie was great, man. I loved that you added the Jim Carrey scene from liar liar as I was just thinking of those types of movies. I miss filmentos beautiful voice
It may prove a hit, it’s not a perfect flawless movie. When you really take a moment to think about it, it’s a confused film that, while it has its potential and bits of technical achievement, whatever “message” it tries to convey is itself confused.
If anything, it being this massive hit (though that’s largely due to being such a nostalgic brand and IP that both adults and children have connected to for decades) may send out a very different signal to both Hollywood and audiences alike.
Even still, such success like this won’t last forever, whatever comes up will inevitably go down. Both Avatar and Endgame have had their peaks of not only money, but also talk and relevancy, but those too had faded into the background. So I guarantee this film May will be as well.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the message was perplexing. I feel likeit tries to hit on every angle of feminism and patriarchy, coming up halfway each time. With every perspective being shown, it turns into a jumbled mess of ideas that doesn't have a satisfying conclusion. I still enjoyed the movie, the effects, cinematography, setting, big scenes were all great... it just didn't really have a clear plot when it seems like it tried to have one.
@@vonskii
Good thought
Of course the message is confusing because the movie is not about the message, rather the message is just another vehicle for the movie to be. 15 minutes into the film I could see how they were making fun of their own “woke” narrative.

@@vonskii Hell yes. It's so reassuring to see there's others who see my side and share the same thoughts on this one.
It was bright and uplifting. Esthetics matter. It was fun. Ryan Gosling's Ken was a high point. He really is fantastic. And most important and oddly since it is a fantasy film, it is a human story and relatable. We like to see movies about the human condition. It is also a plus that the story is still uplifting. We all love happy endings or endings that find resolution.
Is no one talking about the fact that Moviemento sounds AWFUL.
It's not relatable*
I actually came to enjoy the tone of your voice and tember! Hehe. 🌿
Sublime, Filmento
This film succeeded because of brilliant Machiavellian marketing. The film itself is pretty meh, just like "Get Out". Get Out was really a pretty mediocre Twilight Zone episode. Really...white people stealing the bodies of black people? If you told people the plot before they saw it, they would eyeroll.
Barbie first did a viral marketing thing where they somehow convinced everyone it would be cool to see this with a completely unrelated movie. I think over half of each of those movies box office was people just seeing them because it was some meme so they could post on social media they took part. Second, they outright lied in the promos about what it was about. They completely, 100% made the movie seem like it was a cutsy little family movie for young girls. They instructed no one to release reviews and barred anyone seeing it until it was released. Therefore, they short circuited the traditional backlash that might have come if some bad word of mouth circulated that undermined their lies.
Without those two things, this would have been probably a bomb. The "lessons" learned here are not positive. They played people and exploited some inefficiencies in the marketing machine to fool people. I know A LOT of women who saw barbie with their kids who were angry that the movie was way more adult and political than they thought and would not have seen it if they knew in advance what kind of movie it was. So the key to its success was lying and media blackouts and building a marketing campaign based on creating a viral moment. It is actually pretty underhanded.
This movie was hilarious in theaters. Ken was a goddamned gem.
The new voice makes me think I accidentally clicked on a WatchMojo or Looper video. The old voice was what made this channel unique.
