Minority Report is a sci-fi action thriller starring Tom Cruise who you may know from Top Gun: Maverick and for being Tom Cruise. Minority Report (2002)
Based on a short story by the late Philip K. Dick, this science fiction-thriller reflects the writer's familiar preoccupation with themes of concealed identity and mind control. Tom Cruise stars as John Anderton, a Washington, D.C. detective in the year 2054. Anderton works for "Precrime," a special unit of the police department that arrests murderers before they have committed the actual crime. Does anyone else remember The Minority Report tv series? It only lasted 1 Season, but it followed the lives of the 3 Precogs after the events of the film. I liked it & still wish it had lasted more then 1 Season.

@@wjzav1971 Well, he produced the mission impossible movies and top gun but not The Mummy so he didn't have a lot of input in that movie. On the other hand, as a producer, he had to make a ton of choices for the mission impossible movies together with the director who he picked. All this to say, he does have a good creative vision

The designated Diretor for The Mummy Alex Kurtzman (you might know him from the NuTrek shows) had no experience with big budget movies and as soon as Cruise realized that, he took over production. Officially, of course Kurtzman was in charge. Unofficially however, Cruise decided everything and the entire cast and crew were rather willing to listen to an established Hollywood Star than to a newby. It went as far as Tom Cruise telling Kurtzman which lenses to use for the cameras and he had the script changed to give himself more screentime and took some away from the Mummy. The Mummy was Cruise' movie through and through and that happens when he runs unchecked and doesn't work in concert with people whome he respects.
The scene where he wakes up after the eye surgery still haunts me. Great movie.

The most unbelievable thing about this whole movie isn't the telling the future or the attack or any of it. It's the fact that these people are imprisoned in these really weird hibernation pods and called murderers despite there being no victim and not just put into some sort of therapy

I don't see this as the most unrealistic thing considering it's not about the current time but somewhere in the future where the legal system has changed. 20 years ago something like this sounded like pure fiction but seeing how things are going I don't even think it's that unbelievable that something similar could happen in few decades. Just instead of drug induced prophets would be more likely to be an AI algorithm. Even now there is this PTRA (Pretrial Risk Assessment) that is "used to estimate the defendant's risk of failure to appear, new criminal arrests or technical violations" (direct quote from US courts web site) and the whole point of it is to predict future troubles based on previous behavior, race, sex, where the defendant lives etc. I know it's not the same thing but still it's in the same direction, you can get more or less punishment based on algorithm.
Plus the way targeted ads have become so aggressive to the point people think it reads their mind, that its literally scary. So we already use algorithms and software to predict future behavior. I don't think it's sci fi anymore to think something similar can be applied in the near future for "pre crimes" collecting a database for every citizen and predicting what someone could do and the thing is a lot of people will actually support it.
The scene in the elevator is amazing because Colin Farrell thinks he is in charge and mocks Anderton, but then suddenly the alarm goes off and all his cockiness goes away instantly.
I think its because he thought murder wont occur or they would notice it. And then an alarm sets off, meaning he could die. Maybe the alarm is of him dying to Anderson.

Watched Minority Report recently. It's a great sci-fi movie. The graphics look good for a 2002 movie, the futuristic designs of buildings, vehicles, and weapons are interesting, and the story is fun to follow, which I cannot say for some other sci-fi movies (like the Total Recall remake).
Personally, I thought the extended Total Recall remake was more interesting than the original. It seemed to focus in more on the core concept than the original. While one could argue the original had a more interesting world, what with Mars and mutants and whatnot, the remake had a more basic "sci-fi future" so as to not distract from the key concept: is any of what he's experiencing real?
Granted, I think the extended version does so far better. The non-extended version leaves out some key scenes that actually do explore the concept, so the "normal" non-extended version does seem pretty bad in comparison.
It feels like such a possible movie for tech in 30 years time. Not everything is futuristic but parts are.
Total recall (original) was a genuine surprise for me. Still very flawed, but pretty good watch
The jetpack scene where he fights the cops on a fire escape, they added about 10 stories to the buildings with CGI

I actually think that using that scene from The Aviator is a really clever way to explain scene momentum to screenwriters. Scenes are boring with nothing behind them, there needs to be context there that makes the scene worth something

Minority Report is a deserved cult classic for my family, it's such a perfect combination of an awesome concept that's fully explored, awesome visuals, great action, and tense and emotional moments all blended together into non-stop wonder.
It does have Tom Cruise in it however, and thus I have not watched it.

I've just had to accept that girls aren't that into sci-fi. Matrix, Terminator, Aliens, can't get them to watch them. Still, I've managed to make them huge LOTR fans. It fills me with a sense of accomplishment that they actually loved one of my recommendations and for once we can agree that this is a great movie ;)

my entire family is into sci-fi, and I have a really big family. My mom introduced me to all of that. I remember I watched LOTR when I was like 9 the first time and said it was boring. But I'm 29, and by the time I was 18, it was a regular thing to quote the movie amongst my sisters and female cousins because we all love sci fi and fantasy. You waited until they were teens to show them? My son only likes cars, he could give a crap about science fiction. My girls love it.

Just the other night I was showing them bits of Minority Report and Matrix. Tried to get the interested. No go. A comment they make a lot is it just too out there, too complicated. They want something that's a bit more grounded. I think they will eventually watch those movies and find them good, but maybe it's not just their thing.
I didn't wait till they were teens to show them LOTR. They had plenty of chances to see it as it was on at least once a year when we watched it with the wife. It's a long and slow movie for a small kid to pay attention to.

I remember the ending very well. I liked that it was a heroic version of the "Sadistic Choice" trope. Anderton left the villain cornered in such a way that he ends up taking a third option and ends his own life.

That's because it was based on solid source material from an actual science fiction writer, and thinking about the possibilities of the future is what good sf is all about.

When I was a kid, I loved this movie. I’m a girl and it wasn’t a typical movie for little girls, but it burned in my head for years and I simply couldn’t forget the scene of drinking spoiled mild and nasty sandwich.
Weird how even girls think that many little girls don't like and enjoy science fiction films. Many, many do but we're constantly told, it's not for us. Even tho it us. Main oracle is a woman but still, we shouldn't like this movie? Weird.

Even the actually Spielberg is in short supply these days, he definitely isn't the filmmaker he was in the 80's and 90's. Pretty much the only consistent filmmaker from the young maverick days of Hollywood is Martin Scorsese.
People need to remember one very important fact - a Director is only as good as the script that they are directing. Without a Grade A script they are just people doing things and getting paid and are of no real value.
Spielberg would be nothing if he didn't have great material to work with first. Remember that.

i love this film as well, such a sci-fi classic. not sure id call it underrated though at the time of its release but i think the younger generation wouldnt know about it. man we had some awesome films from the early 2000's.

We all love a good Cruise run but that shot of him coming at Leo is terrifying.
That gag reel of starting with hard rain and then dude eating all that stuff out of the refrigerator set to a laugh track had me laughing so hard I can’t stop
I think I'm biased with this movie because I read the book a couple years prior to it being released and I loved the book... but I really think this movie was criminally underrated, it's a great movie through and through, a real treat if you like sci-fi. I regard it as one of Tom Cruise's best movies. And even though it wasn't really received negatively at the time I think it's worthy of being considered a classic yet it's barely ever in any conversations.

Watched John Wick 4 today and I feel the same about it as you do Minority Report where it's "on fire" the whole time so I don't care John has infinite ammo in scenes because I don't want the momentum to stop
Just an absolute masterpiece of science-fiction; one of my favorite movies for sure!
There are a lot of improbable things in this movie, and I know many hated the last act when it came out, but I still think its great both visually and thematically for many of the reasons presented in this video.
As a Canadian I absolutely loved the MVP hockey lineup!
I discovered this movie after CG Crew featured it in a video, and it’s now one of my favourite films. Spielberg’s lost this kind of movie magic in recent years it seems, but Cruise still has it!

They really used their premise really well.
By setting up the effect of the cause before the action takes place makes it really easy to justify the pacing & decisions of the movie.
Which leads to race against time since the cause and effect of future are still constant and fixed ,
and we know that from the previous incidents that no matter what the incident will happen and no force within that universe will change that outcome.
And with no need to introduce the char in depth till they are needed for the story.
I have next to no interest in film writing, to me a good film is a good film I like what I like but never look to deeply into it. However these videos are so fascinating and I absolutely love watching them. Just a testament to how good your writing is Filmento ❤

TC may be an absolute nut bar in real life but he's also the last real action movie star and I appreciate his passion and sacrifice for his craft.
One of movie's best design decisions that helps strengthen those points is the presentation of the visions. On one hand of course you have these broken streams of "footage" that need to be analyzed to find clues, adding suspension for the ticking clock.
However the haunting, nightmarish presentation with disjointed, distorted footage & sound (+music at times) makes the viewer more uneasy & tense while watching it, as if it were a horror movie; and emphasizes that the culprits (especially in the opening case) are becoming something inhumane or monstrous in those moments.
It compliments the tension of the plot because the viewers are now further conditioned to be scared of the potential outcome of the heroes failing to stop said visions. Days of Future Past may have you engaged as you want to see the dystopian future prevented, but the visions coming true in Minority may even cause you to shiver in fear instead, depending on how you reacted to them prior.
Especially when Anderton reaches for the pictures on the bed and you can directly see him succumbing to the dark side for lack of a better description, it's more terrifying to watch , based on what f.ex. Howard Marks was already depicted as prior.
Someone at Netflix needs to contact filmento about a regular series. This is better than most of what's put out on television for this genre, no question.
Ironically, yes... there was a tv show im 2015 that worked as a sequel for the movie (basically a detective joins forces with one of the twins who can see the future). Sadly, it didn't make it a second season but at least two actors from the OG movie reprise their roles
I love this movie. Spielberg's and Cruise's next collaboration, "War of the Worlds" wasn't nearly as good.
This sounds a lot like JJ Abrams mystery box but with more intensity and time-sensitive stakes. The honor and organic dynamic sounds a lot like Shane Black's good-news-bad-news in an action sequence.
That Heavy Rain segment was hilarious!
Speilberg's genius in the sci-fi movies he's made is that the stories are very detailed. The characters are well developed and (usually) complex, even if they're in the movie only for a short time. The tech is also well thought through but with Spielberg, it feels more mundane, similar to today's smartphones or laptops. But what sets Spielberg apart is that he portrays groundbreaking tech with dire consequences if abused or unwisely applied. The benefits of being older and witnessing the horrors of nuclear weapons and the surveillance state.
This is a timeless classic, I really love this movie, thank you Filmento, I am a diehard fan of your work. I like to watch your videos after arriving from a day of work, while I finally enjoy a meal in the couch. It is part of my routine to get your new videos.

also, this movie has one of the most banger quotes ever.... the guy saying "in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king" to the protagonist who just lost an eye but is now one of the few who know the truth was such a cool scene

One of my favorite "fast movies" is Out of Time" (2003), where the main character avoids being incriminated into a potential homicide by chasing after each new development in the case.

The "Aero" aesthetic of 00s SciFi movies (glassy and "bubble" like) its something else, this movie came during my teens and I saw it in the cinema, great film.
i watched this movie in a high school film class in 2007 and it lead me on the path the eventually got me to this channel, thats sick.

Funny thing is that, despite the popularity around the internet of saying, almost automatically, "no spoilers" and, in general, the obvious animosity towards "spoilers", THIS is exactly what I say when I declare that no only that I don't mind spoilers, but I actually prefer to be spoiled - it gives me a frame of... well, movement, which increases my enjoyment (there is actually some research on it). Following on this analysis (which I am yet to finish), we could say that Minority Report is a perfect example on how to use spoilers to keep the audience hooked

The great thing about this film that A LOT of films get wrong these days is that despite the precogs the events that ramp up tension ALWAYS occur in order or at the same time. A lot of films 'cheat' at this by having the 'tension building events' end up being a flashback or the timing of events being meaningless - eg Wakanda Forever's UN speech being intercut with the raid on the outreach centre, or Wanda's actions in Multiverse of Madness always taking a 'pause' whenever the film needs something else to happen - removing any urgency and stakes from the prior scenes. This is why Infinity War and Minority Report worked so well - because the timing of events is never used to undo the tension of the scene prior..instead each event works to build UP the overall tension of the film till the last moment.
I went to school with a guy surnamed Anderton. It was very common for peers and teachers to repeatedly call him "Anderson," regardless of having been previously corrected.
I think it's a form of expectation bias.

Minority Report is such a greeeeat movie, too bad its underrated and buried in the sea of forgotten early 2000s movies. Such a near perfect movie.
one thing that makes filmento one of the best reviewers is how he analyses the good and the bad in a movie in such great detail, taking into account what works and what doesn't. Most reviewers often go for simple subjective opinions and end with the usual tagline of "these are just my opinion".

the super early 2000s had this style in futuristic movies that I have no word for it. When you watch Minority Report, Time Machine, A.I they all feel like the future cities and societies got made by the same person. maybe it is the stlye of CG of the time and also all the bloom they put in movies

I won't complain about the 'doctor' not killing Anderton, because of the presence of the precogs already established. He couldn't make that move without alerting the authorities to himself. As such, he made the experience just as uncomfortable for John as possible.
