Yeah your right the Emperor is pretty much as dead as you can be without actually being dead. He's still kicking just because of his physic might and the Golden Throne. Without him warp travel is possible but dangerous in the extreme and it limits you to sort, blind leaps. Direction, time, and distance doesn't mean much in the warp so you need the Astronomican to give you a reference point. It would be like trying to head north but north constantly moves around you. If you can't see where north is that's impossible.

About the few details at the end. You can learn more in the videos Realms of Ultramar and The State of the Galaxy also from the Templin Institute. The Legends Lost to time being reborn and the new warriors etc ....
I would also Recommend their The Emperor of Man Kind and Astra Militarum videos as well
The Emperor of Mankind video actually has the answers to your question about the Emperor ...
But yes the Emperor is projecting the Astronomican into the Warp a psychic beacon that enables navigation through the Warp.
Imagine the Warp as a really stormy see and you are on a boat on that stormy sea. You can not tell how far from land you are which way you should go or where the cliffs or shallows are ...
Now the the Astronomican is like a lighthouse shiningh through the storm for the boat. By seeing how intense the light is where its coming from etc you can approximate how far from it you are which way you are heading, and which way you need to go to get where you want to.

In 40k lore there are supposed to only be 1000 chapters made up of 1000 marines each adding up to 1 million battle brothers across the entire galaxy. Due to circumstance and the vagueness of record keeping in 40k the number of chapters can be above or below this number with some chapters being recorded as lost or extinct only for them to pop up again later or simply be forgotten about but still very much active. The same goes for the number of marines per chapter. a very small number have over the 1000 marines while some have never reached that many members due to one reason or another like battle losses or gene flaws or simple misfortune e.g. the Lamenters chapter. Their history is about as grim dark as it gets.

Well, it is always vague. I know they flat out say that in codexes but it always felt like hyperbole to me than hard fact. Could be more could be less, nobody really knows. Also there probably is much more now thanks to the primaris that there was before Cadia fell. Still not enough for what they need but still.

Numbers have always been wonky in 40K like they say their are untold millions of gaurdsmen in the Imperium but they also say Hive worlds can comfortably export 1 million people for the guard a a day so that tells me millions doesn't cover it. Although I suppose that doesn't make to much sense by itself. Unless people breed like rabbits in 40k.

The Emperor is alive but he is little more than a skeleton at this point. He's been alive for tens of thousands of year and he guided humanity from the shadows but at some point he decided that he needed to steer humanity directly if it was to survive.

I do not understand, why people keep mispronouncing Failbaddon the Armless.
Also, they say most powerful in the universe, but all the WH40k takes place in Milky Way galaxy. There is no info on what's out there, and oh, btw, by latest estimation, there are about 2 trillion galaxies, so I wouldn't go as far as to proclaim something the most powerful in the universe, when you know only 1/2000000000000th of what's out there.
