Thanks Scotty! This is my experience also. Silicon works better and lasts far, far longer. The PIAA brand you display in this video is what I use. This is a Japanese brand, and they are less costly than Bosch silicon blades. For many years I used Bosch blades. They used to sell blades which were designed to take refills; but have now discontinued the refillable blades. This is wasteful and costly... so I wound up being a customer of PIAA. And, guess what? That's right, PIAA wiper blades are refillable, just like the old style ANCO and Bosch blades were, but they are made of silicon! PIAA makes an astonishingly good product.
Blade refills were economical but greed took over. $$$$$$$$$$ Notice how they all went to the whole blade replacement at the same time? C O L L U S I O N between the companies.
@@norman7179 Yes, I noticed. But they didn't all make this change simultaneously. Living in a snow free part of America and keeping my 2011 Prius in a garage all the time I find the rubber blades to be very good. I bought Akebono brake pads recently because of your recommendation. Thank you for these videos. I learn a lot. Best wishes from ice country (Northern Michigan). PS: I have a ML320, and that is the one area I disagree with you. Love my MB!
Had a '06 ML350 and that thing would break down so often (first 2 years - 4 fan belts, alternator and bracket, water pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor, brake pads and rotors on all 4's). After 6 yrs the intake manifold (aluminum) was deemed by MB to have deteriorated to a point where oil was leaking from its rear area. Luckily I've gotten the extended warranty but dumped that "money pit" once it expired. Got a '13 Lexus RX450h now and it has never gone in for any repair work. So far, only tires and oil changes. Bottom line.....stay away from MB that were built in the USA.
To Dark Days: Unfortunately I just this morning ordered Zimmermann rotors which are highly recommended by various RUclipsrs but I will definitely look into those rotors down the road. I think I did actually buy Centric rotors with depressions in them and a gray coating for my e350 van a few years ago. I will have to check on that.

Your the best Scotty! Silicone! It is much better. Tip for rubber blades, clean and soak in rubber protectant overnight, a few times a year and the rubber will last for much much longer. Or listen to Scotty, and buy silicone!!
Very rare for roofs to leak, but it's very common for passenger floor floods due to failure of the gasket between the hole in the metal firewall and the plastic AC/heat housing outlet where AC condensation exits through a rubber flapper to drip onto the ground which is easy to fix by applying silicone caulk between the metal firewall and the plastic after removing the right front wheel and peeling back the plastic inner fender. I recommend putting some around the studs that penetrate the firewall in that area and finish by sealing around the fresh air intake screen in the cowl area which also fails letting windshield runoff to run freely into the AC/heat housing where, just like AC condensation, it exits through the pest control flapper drain which can be a major contributor to such floods, because it happens even when the AC is not being used. Maybe Scotty will take the hint and show how to do it if he hasn't already.

Piaa make great wiper blades. I had a set years ago, cost about 48 bucks. Lasted over two years until I destroyed them in a ice storm. Quiet and they also give a "rain-x" like effect on the windshield even when not being used
Hi Scotty, I have been a fan of yours since I was a kid in the 80s i remember you being on our local Houston news station (channel 11 i think it was..) before I had my first car. You were always entertaining, knowledgeable and most importantly, honest! I am glad that I just happened to find you on the RUclips here while looking up stuff for my car. I have subscribed to your RUclips channel now and I look forward to watching your informative videos. Thank you for continuing to share all of your car knowledge and experiences!
Hey Scotty Kilmer, I love your channel. I live in Australia and I have watched hundreds of your videos over the past month after discovering you :). All of your videos are still relevant, as dodgy mechanics are everywhere even down under :). Keep it up, I have already learned so much from your advice and I am happy to re-watch your videos to help you get paid, because you are one in a generation. No one else is as generous with their time as you are, or as honest. Take care.
Thanks Scotty I never knew they made such a useful item. It seems that I have been buying these rubber wiper blades like you said every two to three years it sure would be nice to find a set of silicones to fit all of my vehicles. Thank you for the tip I always love your show
I saw this video last fall and followed this advice as my rubber wiper blades wore out. I’ve been running the same silicone blades for over a year now. There’s apparently a break in period. At first they seemed not to work well for the first few weeks but once they broke in they’ve been running like new ever since.
Cody MacCarroll he's dope af.... diagnose a lot of issues with my car because of him n find the right "medicine" he's like CarMD....fix some ish myself....yeah....n I'm a female. watch him n mechanics cannot screw u over. just tlk the tlk when u go from what this dude says😉
I like the OEM wiper arms because of the wiper slap that I got using after-market arms/blades. I order Trico blade refills and change them out about every 8-9 months, or so. It only takes a few minutes to put the new ones into the wiper blade arms More often than silicone, I agree, but they give a good, clean wipe -- and they are quiet. My main defense against visibility impairment is a coating of Rain-X, which I put on about once a month. It's quick and easy, and the harder it rains, the better it works. At about 35-40 mph, I can turn the wipers to 'intermittent', or sometimes even off, as the air passing over the car makes the water droplets rapidly run back on the windshield and side windows, providing pretty good visibility. When I lived up north, the coating of Rain-X made it easier to deice the windows, using a scraper -- the ice just slid off, in sheets! The only trick is that it must be applied to clean DRY window -- if it's wet, it doesn't work well.
Another great video! I've been binge-watching them for the past couple of days, and learning a lot! As much as I like silicone wiper blades, for me, the only negative is if you're also using a silicone-based water-repellent coating on the glass, such as Rain-X or Rain Guard (as I do). Those products are brilliant because water just beads and rolls over the car, especially as high speeds. However, silicone wiper blades shudder and jump as they're drawn across the coated glass. Silicone-based windscreen coating products make driving a lot safer and they negate the need to use wipers at all, when driving at highway speeds. That's why, personally, I prefer rubber blades. To me, the negatives are outweighed by the positives of using the other products. One type of wiper blades that I'll never use again are the twin blades. Due to their rocking action as they swap from moving in one direction to the other, they tend to smear the water back over the area they just wiped, making them next to useless. BTW. I wouldn't worry about rubber having to put up with heat. Black natural rubber (with carbon) can withstand approximately 90 degrees Celsius (194F). EPDM (an artificial rubber, that is used to make automotive door seals) can withstand around 110-130+ degrees Celsius (230-266F) I don't know what type of rubber is used for wiper blades. My guess would be that it varies, and that's one reason their price varies so much. (I sell various types of rubber products)
Always listen to your advice on How To....about my car. Even made repairs myself and alot of females don't know what to do when it comes to car repairs... Thank You
Hi Scotty, I watch your videos all the time. I live in Florida and as you know the rain here is no joke, so I have to use a quality wiper blade. Up until watching this video I found that Rain X latitude were the best wiper blades out there. I usually change my wiper blades every year, just before rainy season. This season i was at the auto parts store and saw that they finally carried Silicon wiper blades (Michelin made them) and i hate to say this but i'm not impressed, it still streaked and didnt really seem better than what i was already using. Now i'll be the first to say that it may be a poor quality of wiper blade. But for price reference the silicon blades were $25 roughly and the Rain X latitude were $17 . I'm sorry but i didnt see the advantage. I'm going back to the RainX ones. I'm not trying to call you out but i just wanted to let you know what I found
I had a choice between spending $20 (Rubber) or $40 (Silicone) on wiper blades. Took a chance, and spent $40 on the Silicone. 6 years later, they're 'okay' (they're clearly used, and the years show on them); but they still work great. When you mash it together with Rain-X and any ceramics that repels water, it really makes a difference at how often you're changing your wiper blades and your visibility when those products bead up the water and the blades simply push the water to the side. I have a set of spare Silicone blades, but I'm too lazy to replace them; even though I don't have a problem spending 5 hours applying ceramics (once every couple of years) and 15 minutes once every week cleaning my truck. A couple of times, I had thought about replacing my wiper blades; but they're so durable, that you can easily clean them with any Rain-X product and they'll be good as new for a while. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised those blades outlast the life of my truck.
I absolutely think Scotty is the best mechanic. Most of all he is HONEST. I wish I lived in his area to take my cars to. Unless you have any mechanical knowledge, you are at the mercy of your dealer or local shops. Scotty is invaluable to his customers.....
No Way mines are bosch aswell. My only issue is that they are very bulky compared to the regular rubber ones but i wont complain that much, i live in florida so its hot and rainy all the time these blades have lasted forever
I bought those as well. Lasted forever compared to rubber. Took me a long while to figure out why those lasted so much longer than everything else rubber I used. Finally I read the material used was not rubber! Thats what I get for assuming.
Icons were developed for storm chasers. They're made for tough conditions. I had one I bought as a replacement in a dire time on my first car for my drivers side, pound for pound it was 3x better than the rubber
Hey scotty you are the man with the best tips and advice . my 07 highlander could really do with a set of those wiper blades. Thank you for all you do for us drivers and vehicles owners.
Wow Scotty...We have four drivers in my household and live in WA. As you can imagine, wiper blades are pretty important here. After seeing this video, I will be making a switch to silicon blades pronto! Sure we might pay more up front but I fell we will save in the long run. Thanks for the tip!
Scotty, I want to thank you for recommending these. I had purchased these off of a recommendation in an earlier video and they work quite well. In fact I bought the same ones linked in the pinned comment and they are the real deal.
I kept going back and forth trying to decide on which wipers to buy??? First it was these but then it was those? By this time I was feeling a bit washed out even worn down and normally I am such a flexible and an easy going sort of guy....but that's when I saw Scotties video and my anxiety was completely wiped away! So now that I cleaned that up I'll never go back to rubber again, it was sili to get all worked up and in a flap about it but I see that clearly now! Happy New year Folks.
Thanks again Scotty! I have been searching for a good set of wipers for a while. Original factory wipers keep squeaking & streaking even with regular maintenance. Thanks for the advice!

I actually bought this before seeing this video. I have the PIAA silicon blades for 3 years now and they're still working great.
I went through a lot of wiper blades and this is why I love your show Scotty.
😊
I never knew that am gonna start buying those types of wiper blades...thx a lot for the information.

Piaa make great wiper blades. I had a set years ago, cost about 48 bucks. Lasted over two years until I destroyed them in a ice storm. Quiet and they also give a "rain-x" like effect on the windshield even when not being used
is it still worth using rainx along side them? or wil it mess up the silicone coating?
Hi Scotty, I have been a fan of yours since I was a kid in the 80s i remember you being on our local Houston news station (channel 11 i think it was..) before I had my first car. You were always entertaining, knowledgeable and most importantly, honest! I am glad that I just happened to find you on the RUclips here while looking up stuff for my car. I have subscribed to your RUclips channel now and I look forward to watching your informative videos. Thank you for continuing to share all of your car knowledge and experiences!
MY BOY SCOTTY MADE IT TO TRENDING😱😱😱
This video is awesome. Informative, fact based and no filler it’s straight to the point. Great work Scotty definitely subscribing
Congratulations on your trending video
Hey Scotty Kilmer, I love your channel. I live in Australia and I have watched hundreds of your videos over the past month after discovering you :). All of your videos are still relevant, as dodgy mechanics are everywhere even down under :). Keep it up, I have already learned so much from your advice and I am happy to re-watch your videos to help you get paid, because you are one in a generation. No one else is as generous with their time as you are, or as honest. Take care.
Yeah. He's addictive like crack. I can't stop watching them.
I did not know silicone blades even existed, thanks for the info!
its 2am on a school night and ive wound up here great info none the less
Thanks Scotty I never knew they made such a useful item. It seems that I have been buying these rubber wiper blades like you said every two to three years it sure would be nice to find a set of silicones to fit all of my vehicles. Thank you for the tip I always love your show
I saw this video last fall and followed this advice as my rubber wiper blades wore out. I’ve been running the same silicone blades for over a year now. There’s apparently a break in period. At first they seemed not to work well for the first few weeks but once they broke in they’ve been running like new ever since.
I’ve never seen this guy before, but I want more
Cody MacCarroll he's dope af.... diagnose a lot of issues with my car because of him n find the right "medicine" he's like CarMD....fix some ish myself....yeah....n I'm a female. watch him n mechanics cannot screw u over. just tlk the tlk when u go from what this dude says😉
He’s the best!
Cody MacCarroll, it sounds so gay.
Of his dick?
Hell yeah
Great video like always. Love mechanic Monday's makes my Monday a lot better.
Scotty is the best thing to come along to home mechanics. His advice is simply spot on! Keep it up.
So as long as you donot have rain x or rainguard coating on windshield then will silicone blades not jump and shutter?
I've never had good luck with windshield coatings. They always make gunky crap on the windshield for me!
I’m an aspiring mechanic and I love your Channel!!
I’ve never met a pair of silicones I didn’t like.
Riptide 10x word play at its finest
does this one count as offensive? Is there anyone who would take offense to this?
The Doofus Channel I’m sure Scotty agrees with the comment lol
The Doofus Channel humor is far more important then offense
And forget the rubber, too!
Always listen to your advice on How To....about my car. Even made repairs myself and alot of females don't know what to do when it comes to car repairs...
Thank You
Educational and entertaining. Scotty really helps those of us that are not mechanically inclined.
I'm not trying to call you out but i just wanted to let you know what I found
I see Rain-X makes a well-rated silicon wiper blade!
It's surprising how mixed the reviews are on Amazon.
Yes, because these blades are a scam. A piece of crap.
@@aficionadohiend yes because we gonna listen to some rando over the mechanic with 4.6 million subscribers
Yep, bought full silicone to replace my originals. Great performance and smoothness.
I love this guy, i call him the mechanic scientist .
As usual Scotty, you taught me something that not only saves us money but givesme piece of mind. Thank u!
That's peace of mind...
Those are the type I use as well. They last forever like you said. More than worth the extra money up front. XD
My first pair of silicone blades lasted 5 years. They were Bosh Icons blades.
No Way mines are bosch aswell. My only issue is that they are very bulky compared to the regular rubber ones but i wont complain that much, i live in florida so its hot and rainy all the time these blades have lasted forever
They’re great wipers. I have not yet changed my Bosch silicones yet in the three years I’ve had them.
Shelly Kennedy, they are great blades and I will never go back to the old rubber kind.
Love your videos.. Have tried all wiper blades, but never silicone. Will give them a try
Absolutely the best car care show on the planet. Thanks Scotty!
Hey scotty you are the man with the best tips and advice . my 07 highlander could really do with a set of those wiper blades. Thank you for all you do for us drivers and vehicles owners.
Scotty your windshields are the cleanest on RUclips .
T AN try chrisfix channel. Also good stuff
You want to say that my windshield is dirty?? I find this offensive...XD XD just kidding
VinceC V yeah I suppose chris and Scotty have the cleanest windshields
Best show ever. Your fan from India.
hello and thanks!
Scotty Kilmer me too!
Scotty Kilmer btw scotty you said graphite in synthetic rubber made noise but graphite is a lubricant then why is there noise
I love watching your vids Scotty. Not only do you have good material, but you're entertaining as hell!
Subscribed! Love your videos Scotty! Informative yet humorous and serious!
The BEST auto advisor/mechanic in the world.
Congrats on the trending! This is awesome!
I don't even like cars but I watch this channel all the time. 😂
Scott is the type of guy who if you have a flat tire on the side of the road, he'll take a tire off his car and give it to you.
I have been working on cars personally since I was 16 and I am now 66 So this is a great video!! This is great advice!! Thanks Scotty.
Good to see Scotty Kilmer on trending~!!!
Thanks you Scotty for all the good advice that you've given me in the past, keep up the good work.
Glad this is trending.
I bought a generic silicon blades from Canadian tire . I found two refills in the box. This is the second year of Best performance.
This is super interesting! I have no idea on how to maintain a vehicle. Glad I found you on trending! Subscribed! :D
First time watching, entertaining!
Thanks again Scotty! I have been searching for a good set of wipers for a while. Original factory wipers keep squeaking & streaking even with regular maintenance. Thanks for the advice!
A clean, non-offensive comment.
A clean, non offensive pair of upvotes.
I'm offended.
Unfortunately you had 69 thumbs up - pretty rude that - but not to worry I made it 70 should be more by now.

This is my clean and non offensive comment.
I am thinking your comment is a Tide Commercial.
TheZXKUQYB this is a Tide Pod sponsor
I knew silicone was better than rubber, but I did not know there were silicone wiper blades. Ordering on Amazon now. Thanks Scotty!
