I have trained with several who's who of trainers. Not many knows every transition and describes it in a formula. He has a pacific terminology but not unheard of. John truely knows bjj as a whole. Eddie Bravo has his strengths.. the language is different with both those guys.. Danaher i prefer, if he has a weakness it's his memory. He knows more than what he's was ever taught. He is his own.

This is a very smart man, not just in a BJJ frame. He described what the real point of western universities: to make better learners. It's something I've studied at university my first year and a half or so. That really is what college all boils down to. They can teach you skills, and certain professions have direct translation degrees. But a liberal arts college main job is to build someone who knows how to learn.

I was a little confused when John said that he didn't see a purple belt in BJJ for the first 3 years of his training but then I remembered that Matt Serra was only a blue belt when John was a white belt and didn't get his purple belt until over a year later.
Back then Renzo was the only black belt instructor (along with Craig Kukuk before they separated ways) at the academy. Matt and his brother Nick began teaching and running classes when they got their purple belts and later Renzo brought over a brown belt named Vinnie to teach as well. Outside of the Gracie Academies in California this is pretty much how most BJJ schools were staffed in the United States at the time and some didn't even have any black belt or even brown belt instructors.
