I agree that the start was awesome for that kx .Its smaller too so its easier to man handle in the woods like that. Awesome skills to the kid on the kx.
Man I remember those days, I wrapped up the title in the front row of the little bikes that morning and loved the track, so decided to line up in the unlimited class and race again, it’s a KX 100 built to a 112 and I still have that bike in my garage, I won 2 National titles and 3 of 4 local titles on that same bike and setup
I race that series and i know the kid on the 85. He raced the mini-a class (my class) and killed it everytime. So they finally promoted him and he is still killing these old guys. He is only like 15. He wil go FAR with talent like that.
Kid was a damn fast rider through those trees. I gotta give him props for bring that little 85 into the open class that takes balls. Any kind of open area on that track?
I own the KX, a few buddies of mine are who own the CR. My 99 250 frame was bare metal for years longer than the particular person who owns the CR5, this is pre-rusted out frame (and it's a shelf queen). Same goes for my 500 frame. That is why I feel there is basis for debate. But as mentioned, I was going off of numbers released from the manufacturers as opposed to individual dyno runs. I take no offense, thanks for the concern. Idk if I come off hard headed, just try to be as clear as I can.
You can tell by the shadows at the beginning that the CR500 did what it was built for.... leader of the pack! Braahp! But it can't compete with the smaller more agile KX85 in the tight turns. My Ninja 250 is the same way when I go out with the guys, Hayabusas, ZX14s, GSXR1000s are EASILY passible, even the 600s are easy to pass in the turns even with experienced riders on them.
Perhaps you should get a John Deer riding mower. They cut away from the footage but after this a guy on a John Deer riding mower came out and smoked that kawasucky. He dropped the cutter blades and that thing really ripped.
You say the kawi has piss poor plating from the factory, which it does. The KX also has KIPS. Yet another thing almost every KX500 owner has a problem with. Whether the pins are worn to an insane amount or the rod retracts too much and causes hard starting. KX500s also vibrate far more and always tosses hardware unless it is swapped for better stuff. They also break exhaust mounts like its part of its job. These are all of MY experiences with MY bikes.
Anyone who says a 500 two stroke has no bottom end has never ridden one. They bog better than any two stroke made. Its just there so damn powerful when they do hit the pipe it trys to remove your arms from the sockets.
I've yet to stick a valve on my post-89 cylinder and I'm considering pinning my PVs wide open on my 87-88 cylinder. Most time people have problems it's lack of maintenance or they can't time them properly. Yes, I agree aftermarket chambers are poorly built and require a gusset however the stock chamber is much more stout. I haven't seen a mount break on a stocker.. As for vibration, my KX5 vibrates less than my kx250 did has a Hotrods crank which was never balanced, it's possible I just got..
My uncle raced a cr500 in hare scrambles, and was number 1 in TX for awhile. We get on a small super cross track I kick his ass all day on my stock 125. we get on the real long motorcross track the had some sand, he was gone and couldn't catch him. Small bike = easy to through around tight corners Big bike= trq and top end kill you in sand and on straight aways
yes KX85's are just smaller versions of the KX500... lol.....IT'S ALL ABOUT THE RIDER WHO IS NOT AFRAID TO PIN THE THROTTLE! NICE...BTW DID YOU GET OUT THIRD ON THOSE TIGHT TRAILS?
to solve every ones problem is the 85 is smaller and can whip around turns and a 500 is a big bike so it is harder to hit turns fast because there not as nimble as a 85
thats a sick rider on that little kx... anyone who has ridden a 500 smoker knows you cant control all that power on tight trails like that like you can on a little 80
The Kawasaki dampers that are like 20 bucks a piece? lol Yeah, you tend to run through at least one in the front a year and every other to every 3 years I replaced the damper mounts nearest the tank. Comes with being a 2 stroke big bore I suppose. I'm trying to have polyurethane damper mounts made.
Close to the same as in "performance". I did not say they were close to the same in how they get their power or how they go about suspension setups. In fact, most KX500's in stock form put out a few more HP than a CR. For you to say a CR doesn't hold a candle to a KX in any way is a bit ridiculous. The only thing I would say my KX is better at, is high speed stability because of the longer rake. The CR is far more reliable and that is a common opinion between many people who own both bikes.
Sounds like an article from the early 90s. It's a 1 horse difference and I believe you have it backwards, the CR puts out more not the KX. It's also common opinion that the KX5 was the best built big bore engine (going off big name engine builders) and common fact horsepower isn't everything. Reliability from factory yes, the CR has the KX only because of the piss poor plating Kaw did on the cylinder but I can tell now my 2 friends of the same year (88 KX and CR) the KX frame isn't rusted out.
lol, the cr was probably almost sounded like idleing when the ktm was almost pinned i bet around those corners, you could hear that thing from a mile away
The 500 was never intended to be a tight trail woods bike. Its an open class balls to the wall powerhouse that throws rocks the size of that KX's gas tank. The 500 has alot of reciprocating mass with that huge flywheel, making it impossible to corner at high speed. Lets go to the dunes or an wide open course and I gurantee you that KX would never have a chance!
to true, the 500 isnt even hitting power because he hasnt got the straights to use it, that 85 is on band and goen hard, the CR500 is like a T51rSPL turbo. Great power. When it spools up. it has delay.
lucky. I run a pipe built from BiMotion software so the mounts are quite different from that of a commercially available pipe. All of the factory faults can be dealt with fairly easy, though I say junk the frame and drop the motor into a modernish chassis. Needless to say I'm still not a fan of the performance I've seen from the variety of years I've been on. The motor performs more like a 4t than a 2t, and makes nothing for power past like 4grand. The KX5 will rev to the moon.
i have a fully decked out kx500, you don't control it, it controls you. and in those little paths hell yea the 80 is going to whip around those corners with that powerband so fucking fast nothing big can touch it. 85s no joke
i would rather have the 85 in that situation. trails were tight and corners were sharp. the kx is super light, jumps out of corners quick, and is smaller so i'd say it is a better choice if you are racing shit like this. having more cc's doesnt mean you will always win
guys its easer to ride if u have been on the track like that guy was on the track before and the one that didn't win it was his first time on the tract and i would of been scaird to.....
I agree that the start was awesome for that kx .Its smaller too so its easier to man handle in the woods like that. Awesome skills to the kid on the kx.

that guy on the 85 is beastin on that dude, good rider
That has to be the most awesome overtake iv'e ever seen.
I race that series and i know the kid on the 85. He raced the mini-a class (my class) and killed it everytime. So they finally promoted him and he is still killing these old guys. He is only like 15. He wil go FAR with talent like that.
Being a current owner of a KX500, I can tell you that trails like that are not what an open class 2 stroke was made for.
Didn't seem like you were getting on it too much. He did have some nice skill, saw the opening and took it. Looks like fun. Be safe!
Kid was a damn fast rider through those trees. I gotta give him props for bring that little 85 into the open class that takes balls. Any kind of open area on that track?
Keep in mind I'm not referring to varying dyno numbers but that generally accepted as the stock HP.
thats a good rider on the kx85!
When I say mounts. I am talking about the rubber mounts that attach to the frame and have a stud run through the rubber.
Nice quality 🔝
Don't you just love that!!!
I own the KX, a few buddies of mine are who own the CR. My 99 250 frame was bare metal for years longer than the particular person who owns the CR5, this is pre-rusted out frame (and it's a shelf queen). Same goes for my 500 frame. 0:25 A sigh from the Cr500 when he realised he was never going to catch up lol !
You can tell by the shadows at the beginning that the CR500 did what it was built for.... leader of the pack! Braahp! But it can't compete with the smaller more agile KX85 in the tight turns. my little broes kx65 has a ton of low end and i would think the 85 would too. lots of get up and go power!
don't feel bad, my friend did the same thing to an open class on a yz80 at a HS in DE when we were kids.
Perhaps you should get a John Deer riding mower. They cut away from the footage but after this a guy on a John Deer riding mower came out and smoked that kawasucky. He dropped the cutter blades and that thing really ripped.
Haha, Look At Him Go!! lol, u Need To Give That CR some Throttle! ur gunna Kill it..
That kid probably doesn't have to worry about showing up for work on monday in one piece.
thats great. i had the kx100, and that was a snappy bike, i was beatin 450s on it, it was sweet
Damn! that kid knows how to ride!!!
i got kx 85 and i love it
Yes yes yes hondastar11 you are right
You say the kawi has piss poor plating from the factory, which it does. The KX also has KIPS. Yet another thing almost every KX500 owner has a problem with. i remember that guy he passed me once at the devils ridge mud race, i suck in the mud
Anyone who says a 500 two stroke has no bottom end has never ridden one. They bog better than any two stroke made. Its just there so damn powerful when they do hit the pipe it trys to remove your arms from the sockets.

That little kid is a badass
Exactly. That 500 probably never left 1st gear. 250F would be my choice of bike.
Absoultey.. I own and ride one and it is the fastest thing I've been on.. I also have a CBR600 street bike
OWNED!
The smaller the bike in a hare scramble, the better. If nothing else when you drop it, it is easy to pick up.
lol that kid was gooning like crazy its like the bike was flowing through his body
oohh yes it does, the scary part is the powerband...
exactly, give that bad boi a real track n itll do mighty fine
Probably a form of poker run where all sizes, ages and skills whip around different courses all starting from the same line.
that 85 rider is jeremy mcgrath. No wonder he got smoked
My uncle raced a cr500 in hare scrambles, and was number 1 in TX for awhile. We get on a small super cross track I kick his ass all day on my stock 125. we get on the real long motorcross track the had some sand, he was gone and couldn't catch him. Small bike = easy to through around tight corners

KX500... lol.....IT'S ALL ABOUT THE RIDER WHO IS NOT AFRAID TO PIN THE THROTTLE! NICE...BTW DID YOU GET OUT THIRD ON THOSE TIGHT TRAILS?
Lol some of these kids on 85's are fucking quick man!
Exactly! I was gonna write the same comment.. then throw a hill in there and people will realize how hard the 5 hundy runs
yea, like perfectly
kx 85= BEAST
no justice was done her for the beast!
500s are out of their element in that supper tight stuff. I don't doubt for a minute the 500 would inhale the 85 as soon as the trail opened up.
the guy on the cr 500 can't even get in powerband lol. it's too much of a beast for those tight woods:P
ok thats right but we can also say that the boy thats riding the 85 is quite good
@mAtThR3w no mcgrath used to ride
kawasaki. 1988-1991 :)
Honda 1992-96
Suzuiki 97
Yam 98-02
KTM 03
Honda 04- now
Power is nothing without control!!!!
to solve every ones problem is the 85 is smaller and can whip around turns and a 500 is a big bike so it is harder to hit turns fast because there not as nimble as a 85
yea true. lightweight. and it is more manuverable
thats a sick rider on that little kx...
anyone who has ridden a 500 smoker knows you cant control all that power on tight trails like that like you can on a little 80
He'd be absolutely ruthless lol
The Kawasaki dampers that are like 20 bucks a piece? lol Yeah, you tend to run through at least one in the front a year and every other to every 3 years I replaced the damper mounts nearest the tank. Comes with being a 2 stroke big bore I suppose. I'm trying to have polyurethane damper mounts made.
@sdemp321 insane rider
agreed
if he even got into the power band of first gear he would have crashed on that tight trail
That CR500 rider was just getting warmed up. He finished 5th out of 106 riders.
Was that by chance Eli Johnson on that 85?
kawas rule that kids rapid
Sounds like an article from the early 90s. It's a 1 horse difference and I believe you have it backwards, the CR puts out more not the KX. the 500 was lugging. the guy on the KX actually could use his powerband
Kid who left him sitting lives in my county. His name is Larry
Check that guys bike for NOS! Damn he's fast!
sorry didn't have my glasses on. "Your gonna foul the plug"
its cuz the 85 is such a smaller bike that its alot easier to throw around all those tight turns and on such a narrow trail
he got wooped on. HARD CORE!!!!
dude i was behind you lol
yo thats all 2 stroke baby
lol he is a speedy little devil
its just cause its smaller ad gets goin faster i know cuz i have 1 the powerband is from like a quarter through first gear all the way 2 6th
that kid is good
holy hell that kid is fast
that kid rips!
the cr is a 2 stroke as well
lol, the cr was probably almost sounded like idleing when the ktm was almost pinned i bet around those corners, you could hear that thing from a mile away

it sounds like the 500 is idling
yeah but the kx85 has flexibility and the cr500 is really big and bulky so it cant go around edges very quickly
the last thing i would want in the woods is a fucking cr500
all that hard work just
to get duuuuusted on the straight
to true, the 500 isnt even hitting power because he hasnt got the straights to use it, that 85 is on band and goen hard, the CR500 is like a T51rSPL turbo. Great power. When it spools up. it has delay.

KX85= 152.1lbs CR500=238 lbs. Tight trails are a place where a CR500 doesn't go fast.
nah.. its about the RIDER/ and how he fits on it... didnt even sound like he was in the right gear either
the only reason the 85 did so good is because of the shorter wheel base and can take the corners better
i think their power band is from idle all the way to the moon lol
yup doesn't like like there is any coming back for the 500 there...
thoes little 85s r rockets!!
i would rather have the 85 in that situation. trails were tight and corners were sharp. the kx is super light, jumps out of corners quick, and is smaller so i'd say it is a better choice if you are racing shit like this. having more cc's doesnt mean you will always win
0:25 hear "Uhh..." cause he got away
It sounds like a gun cocking at the start
like the guy under me this 85 is alot lighter than the 500 so he can hold it rite to the turn and want wreck
Hahahhahh Thats the first thing I thought!!
2 strokes hammer!!!
the cr5 is a two stroke.on of the badest at that.
guys its easer to ride if u have been on the track like that guy was on the track before and the one that didn't win it was his first time on the tract and i would of been scaird to.....
yea go kawasaki man that guy is fast
