  • During the first Daytona qualifier in the 1961 NASCAR Grand National Speedweeks, Richard Petty was involved in a multi-car crash. As his car went up the track, he used the guardrail as a ramp to flip out of the track and miraculously escaped with little injury. As he was leaving the infield care center, he got word that his father, Lee, had suffered an eerily similar crash - although it was much worse. Despite these being horrific incidents, it just scratches the surface of the carnage of the 1961 NASCAR Daytona Speedweeks.

I find it Crazy/ironic that the reason most oval races are counter clockwise is so the passenger side takes most of the impact yet they didn’t even have walls or very few at speedways at the time kinda made it a moot point

I have so much respect for their courage , to just wear a helmet and shirt, Pants, no seat harness , no fire suit, I can go on , you have to wonder why anyone would with so much danger. Those were serious wrecks with very little protection

Because it was something extraordinary that pretty much anyone could do as long as you could drive a car

@@anncase8673 I agree with that. Nothing safe no rules.

Severe injury and death were common occurrences in that era. Hard to believe how many guys were willing to take the risks to make an average living. You had to be a true daredevil back then.

Run the roval in reverse? That's a great idea! Just switch the bus stop to the other side of the backstretch right before turn 1 and suddenly you have a completely different track, putting the heaviest braking zone on the backstretch with an even longer high speed run going into it!

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen onboard footage of a crash at Daytona from that era before! Nice find and thanks for including it. So many little details are crazy to me, with the main one being his "race suit" of a short sleeve shirt and no gloves. Probably still had the cigarette lighter in the car too and did a Dick Trickle smoking during the cautions! lol

According to Richie, Mark and Timmy Petty, Lee told Richard to climb into the 42 car and try to get that car into the show.

Man, the Plymouth Iron Butterfly Petty drove was a beast. I love in those days all the crazy styled cars you could buy at the dealers was beefed up and run like the devil at Daytona. True stock cars, and the bravest to race them.

These accidents were not in the same race as the title states. Richard was in the 1st qualifying race while Lee was in the 2nd.

You would of thought with all of "Big" Bill's knowledge that he would of put up a WALL around that giant racetrack. He had to know the speeds were going to be a lot faster than anywhere else. Yet he chose a single guardrail........to me, that was just asking for what was to happen.
