Hawaii gets robbed of one of the most insane comebacks in basketball history

  • During the college basketball game between Hawaii and Texas A&M Commerce, Hawaii trailed 53-46 with just 13 seconds left. They then scored a layup with under four seconds left to make it 53-48. They then got the bal back after an errant Texas A&M Commerce inbounds pass went out of bounds. They quickly hit a three to make it 53-51 with 1.8 seconds left. Then, Texas A&M Commerce somehow turned the ball over again on the inbounds pass and Hawaii secured the ball and hit the buzzer beating three to win it 54-53... but the refs blew the whistle before the shot as they ruled the Texas A&M Commerce player who touched the ball on the play was out of bounds. However, upon replay it was clear that he was not even close to being out of bounds. Hawaii instead how to inbound the ball but missed the potential game winning three and lost 53-51 in heartbreaking fashion.

For those wondering, here is the rule straight from the rule book:
    Rule 7:
Section 1. Out of Bounds-Player, Ball
Art. 1. A player shall be out of bounds when he touches the floor or any object
other than a person on or outside a boundary line. An airborne player’s status
shall be where he was last in contact with the floor.
Art. 2. The ball shall be out of bounds when it touches a player who is out of
bounds, any other person, the floor or any object on or outside a boundary, the
supports or back of the backboard, or the ceiling or overhead equipment.
Art. 3. The ball shall be out of bounds when any part of the ball passes over the
    backboard from any direction.
A player can touch another person out of bounds, but the ball cannot. Since only the player touched the referee and not the ball, It is not ruled out of bounds and play should have continued. By the letter of the law, Hawaii was robbed.

    • @kevinleong6814
      @kevinleong6814 Год назад +1

While I conceptually agree to the letter of the law, I think this in praxis isn't full proof. Had the shot missed - I'm sure the public opinion would swing the other way in wanting the out of bounds call, which in my opinion, is a pretty favorable outcome in general.
The issue is that by these literal rules, one could make a case that players/coaches/refs could just hold up or push players back into the lines of the court on late game plays/traps to keep balance or keep the game in play.
Realistically, I see this mostly the refs fault for even being that close to the situation. Ultimately, I think the refs reviewed and called a logical call because even if he wasn't there, that player probably would have 1) stepped out of bounds, or 2) thrown the ball up and wasted a significant amount of time + a more unfavorable shot. The refs may have even been able to call a re-play because the ref interfered very evidently with the play.
Definitely sucks, but a 1.8s inbounds opportunity isn't so bad of a consolation either.

Well, for one, the official is in play, and he was standing out of bounds, so out of bounds to Hawaii is the right call.
For two, the shot wouldn't have counted anyway because the clock operator stopped it at 0.7 for just long enough for the player to get the shot off. He wouldn't have been able to with a running clock. If you count it out, the player had just left the ground and was on his way up when the clock actually hit zeroes, ball still completely in hand.

    Here’s what I think happened:
    - Referee gets hit by commerce player
    - As he gets hit, he flinches. In this case his eyes are likely closed in a the fraction of a second
    - By the time his eyes are opened, he’s more worried about falling over and starts preparing his hands for the ground. You can see his hands start to move downwards in order to break his fall.
    - While looking at the ground, Hawaii’s bench starts freaking out and pointing at the ground. Likely trying to argue for an out of bounds call. And at the same time the 3 is hit.
    - So in that case, the only thing the ref sees after being hit by the Commerce player is the bench asking for a call. Ref assumes that out of bounds is the call he has to make (split-second adrenaline call) since it’s the only thing he’s seeing happening in front of him. No it’s not the correct call, but given the situation and information he’s able to take in: it’s the only call he dan reasonably make. (Side note: Hawaii’s bench was wrong about the out of bounds too if that’s what they are motioning for)

This is kinda poor positioning by the official, but it’s unfortunately the right call. The player touching the ball touched the official while the ref was out of bounds. The official is considered part of the floor so that makes the ball out of bounds. That’s the rule

    • @scott1564

The official probably should have been a step or two back but he is on the table/bench side, so he doesn't have a lot of room over there to work with. He has to assume he will be running down the court, not standing there for the entire play. But you're right: the blue player was out of bounds when he touched the official, who is out of bounds, so it's white's ball at the spot. The call was correct. Nobody got robbed. I'll never get over the idea that people's first instinct is to believe that the officials are wrong. As if a 3 point shot should just count because...it went in? Not understanding why it should count here. Ball is dead, whistle wasn't blown because official was hit by a player and for a split second didn't realize where he was. If he blows his whistle immediately and is inbounds, THEN he would have screwed up (no violation), but I guess if there was no shot, no one would have noticed. So then it would be OK?

For that play to properly be ruled to be out of bounds, the ref would have to have been hit by the ball or the player would have to hit the floor or an object which is out of bounds (Not a person out of bounds), while in contact with the ball OR the player be in the air when contacting the ball after the player was last in contact with an object or the floor out of bounds. This game had a lot less controversy than what appears…
The Hawaii player who picked up the loose ball (for the alleged potential game-winner) caught it and established his right foot as his pivot with his left foot off of the ground. Then he put down the left foot behind the 3-point line and followed by picking up and putting back down the right foot outside of the arc. Thus, it was an uncalled traveling violation. If you cannot see what I just described, then turn down the video playback speed to 0.25x and watch that segment of the play again!

    • @KennonFort

Nothing related to traveling violation called after whistle was blown; my point was addressing the speculative “would’ve-could’ve-should’ve” alleged controversy of saying the officials ought to have allowed and counted that 3-point basket.

He the player or he the Ref? My understanding: The player touched the ref, who was straddling the line when the player touched the ball. That makes the ref an out of bound surface. So the player was out of bounds because he contacted the ref when he touched the ball. Which was why the ball went to Hawaii on the throw in because the last touch in bound was by the other team.
Only issue was if the ref shifted to his own right instead of backing up, that would have been a sweet play.

Refs have way too much control over outcomes these days and need to be held accountable. They should go in front of the media after games and answer questions as players do since they're also such a big part of the game. Especially in the NFL.
That ref who blew the whistle should be suspended, even for one game. There needs to be accountability.

The official blew the whistle. The rules say when the whistle is blown, play is stopped. But as the replays show, that official clearly had no business blowing that whistle. The ball never went out of bounds, the official who blew the whistle had his back turned to the play and didn't even see it. As a result, Hawaii was robbed.

  • @ryanslewis
    @ryanslewis Год назад +4

The Hawaii player took at least 3 steps before shooting the ball, so the shot shouldn't have counted either way. The seemingly incorrect out-of-bounds call actually benefitted Hawaii by giving them more time and a better chance to score as opposed to the travelling violation. Too bad they came up short because everyone loves a good comeback... except the losing team.

This happens in football too, when someone fumbles the refs always blow it dead. It pisses me off so much bc over half the time it’s an actual fumble and if the defender ran it back for a TD it doesn’t count bc a brain dead ref blew his loud inhaler.
