Came across your video this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice to see something local on the interweb. I still love flavouring maggots and my favourite was always Archie Braddocks roach magic. Good job its extremely strong because my little bottle is slowly going down and I don't think its available any longer.

@@themagicoffishing that’s probably the only flavour they have left from the range.

If you smell those fjuka baits you can smell the liquid geranium.. it's been used for yrs.i remember my grandad boiling them and adding it to homemade groundbait instead of water

Try a bit of aniseed oil on your maggots . It's a great roach attractor 🎣🎣

I've made exactly the same mistake... You are feeding by hand, its a deep swim; the maggots are falling slowly (>1ft every 5 seconds) and you've got your hookbait set well below the feed most of the way down the swim. Those chub might well have been taking your feed almost at its point of entry at times The only place you were going to hook one was right at the bottom of the swim. Chub do come high for maggots in the coldest of conditions. Personally (despite the pace) i would have used (thickish) waggler under-shotted just enough to check it and keep the bait slightly in front of the float. No need to slow it down as such as the descending feed will be going through at the same pace as the surface flow until it gets right down to the bottom. Failing this I would have fed in a different way to match the float tactic that I was using.
Which Sheffield junior side did you fish for and did you fish the schools nationals. I'm certain we would have competed against each other. I remember Wales had quite a good side.

Ps I almost forgot. Sad about Jim baxter RIP. I contributed to Angling Star on a number of occasions. Jim always encouraged his contributors to be honest and straight to the point even if it was sometimes controversial. He was one of very few Angling Magazine editors who wasn't driven to blatantly endorse commercial interests at the expense of honesty and good reading material. A man of integrity.

Thanks for such a thoughtful comment. Yep, looking back on that winter day I probably should have fished it a bit differently but it was only a short session and it’s a peg I usually catch a lot of roach and dace from in the warmer moths - I don’t think I was expecting big chub! I’ll have to give it another go this winter… Blimey; now you’re asking on the couple of years I was fishing nationals with the Juniors… I’m terrible with dates 😄 It would have been around the mid to late 80s and the manager was Jim Baxter. One of the nationals was definitely on the Nene, I remember that much. And other anglers included Wayne Shakespeare, Kevin Vickers, Dominic Stones and Kevin Hodgkinson (who was tragically stabbed to death while fishing in Sheffield not that long ago 😢). An interview with Jim Baxter was the first video I put on this channel if you fancy a bit of old skool match angling reminiscing. Cheers

@@themagicoffishingYep we would have almost certainly fished against each other. I knew we were of a similar vintage, though you seem to have aged better than me. We (my family) had left Sheffield by that time and I was part of the Goole Junior squad. Its terrible to think that several of the guys who I fished with have also passed. I'll take a look at that interview. I saw Jim a few times in recent years, mostly at his yearly matches. Since reaching adulthood I've primarily been interested in big fish but always made an effort to attend Jim's matches when possible.
      Thanks for commenting.

Thanks mate - I was so relieved when I finally landed one! 😅 Gutted to lose the first two: I’ll have to keep searching for the shoaled up roach and dace this winter. Once found them and had 20lb on the stick in three hours. As a fellow Sheffield lad, if not seen already, you might enjoy the reminiscing I did with Jim Baxter in my early vids - ruclips.net/video/bIxQ6m9zgpA/видео.htmlsi=FzzxT9KBwaqrowhP

IMO , I would use 4-5 lb bottom and 16 hook, but I’m no expert. Try a small piece of meat. No one is an expert, you just got to keep trying different things.

      Hi there.
I just came across this old comment and realised I never responded to it for some reason. It also made me realise I can’t recall seeing you comment on some of the more recent videos and you were always one of my regulars or favourites, so I hope all is well.
      Cheers, John
