    I have spent a small fortune on an extension this year, and I 100% agree with you, Scott. The trades I picked were based on whether we could work well together.

    As a builder, I've seen it all aswell, it's really hard dealing with most customers, they always want a discount after you've sent them a quote, 1 customers said to me he's still working with prices from 2015, I litrally laughed and jumped in the van, everyone wants a rolls royce home but not will to pay what it costs, how is that possible, I went to another job, they had load of fancy cars, 1 of the cats could pay my mortgage off and they still want to haggle and get a cheap one, crazy

    The Germans have two words related to low price: billig and günstig. Put them both into Google Translate and they both translate to 'cheap' but that's not how they are used. The first means cheap but low price, low quality, somebody can be billig like we would say a girl is cheap. Günstig means lowish price, good value.
    The fact that the german language evolved to make that distinction is important.

    Hi Scott, genuine question how does a customer determine if a cheaper price is too low i.e. will be a poor job vs being possibly overcharged if they take the higher price? Personally I would get a minimum of 3 quotes and look at previous work where possible or take a recommendation but I imagine some people fall into the trap you describe because they fear being ripped off by the higher price. I have myself been in a situation years ago where I took a higher quote expecting better quality but was let down by the workmanship. Thanks 👍🏻

    • @matthewcritchley1214

      I think the customer has to take some responsibility and do some research on the job at hand and they can have some specific questions about the job and make an informed decision on who will get the job.

  • @derekrobertson1548
    @derekrobertson1548 11 месяцев назад +1

    I think if the customer is willing to pay full price you are asking, (not the original one quoted) a new one to take into account price increase in materials and extra cost involved in removing old patio i dont see any harm in doing the work. Surely the extra expense of getting the job done a second time would be enough for them to learn there lesson. However if they are still trying to do the job on the cheap by reusing original materials it would be a firm no. However there is always that one customer who will never learn and never see comon sense, especially when money is involved and even worse that that is the ones you just dont get on with. Dont imagine you would get many of them being your own boss. Wishing you a speedy recover and stay safe.

    TBF to your average half wit customer (aka the general public), they don’t have a clue about what is involved etc in doing many jobs. They might not know that you are a stand up honest person who has a good attention to detail & knows exactly what you are doing. They may of only met you on a few occasions. I think it can be difficult for them to weigh up who is decent & who is not. There are a number of shysters out there unfortunately who talk a good game & boast this & that but are complete cowboys. I have come across them & been stung on occasion. I hate getting trades in unless I know a fair bit about them & their standard of work. So I think it is a minefield from the trades side & the customer side!
