The mellow tapping he shows is really funny to mess around with and i learn so much from experiment with it, changing it around adding/removing notes alt rythm etc
Man....I've used a lot of those chords, but I never thought to split the voicing between octaves like that. It seems so obvious now that I feel really stupid, but I guess that's what separates Vic Wooten from the rest of us mere mortals. It also really frees up the opportunity for melodic runs and such, which I could never figure out how to do. I will be trying some of these techniques on my six-string bass...I don't know, though, how he gets such a good tapping tone.
OH MY GOD HE'S SO YOUNG! I love how his descriptions of the notes and instrument reinforce his obvious knowledge and love of the instrument. My son and my son's son and his son's son and so on will hopefully always love and share his music :)
Someone search Magbalik by Callalily a Filipino song... In 5:27 the riff is somewhat similar in the intro of Magbalik. Victor Wooten really inspires people all over the world!!!
Well basically from what I know you take your middle finger and pinch the string off of your thumb using only your right hand. That's how I do it. You can also fret a note and do the same technique in different places. It can get tricky to find them but they are there. You're just cutting the scale length in different segments, that's all.
I have struggled with this often. I found that the biggest factors are sting size (smaller works best) but there's also action. the lower the action, the louder sound you'll get.
He's really right about the "easy" once you get past the Technique part, which really is the hard part, getting used to interacting with the instrument you're not familiar with, it's really much easier than it seems to get those melodies he's getting at, the notes really aren't hard, and the Technique just takes practice, again not "hard" per se, just time consuming. I love it when Super good musicians are also good teachers. You get how they "Get it", and pretty soon, You "get it" too.
Dream Theater, Rush, U.K., Kansas, Kaipa, Spock's Beard, Porcupine Tree, The Flower Kings, Meshuggah, Opeth. That is a great start. Dream Theater offers a lot of different music anywhere from Rush to Metallica and tons more. Their music ranges from about novice to very advanced. Good luck. If you have any questions about the band or the genre or just bass in general I will try to explain things clearly.
@bluesruley2k Man, you don't need an 8000$ bass to sould like that. You won't get the certain flavour of the sound, but you will be able to make it sound good, however if the electronics on your bass is passive, then you need an amp for that
Speed also depends on having a good bass with good action on the frets...less work and more freedom, plus a good bass amp, good compressor helps. but loving to make music is it.
Generally, you won't have the free fingers to strum as well. When you're tapping, you're supposed to tap the fret board with such strength that the note plays without you needing to strum. This leaves whatever fingers you would use to strum free to do something else.
It will certainly work with major chords. It will work with any chord. You can figure out your own minor chords. You know how major chords are made up of the first, third, and fifth notes? i.e. G major is G, B, and D. For a minor chord, you just flat the third. So G minor would be G, Bflat, and D. If you would like some help feel free to message me.
I never really give myself specific amounts of time to practice, but whenever I sit in front of the computer or the tv I have a bass in my hand. So I'd say at least an hour a day, but of course I'm not just sitting there tapping the bass with my right hand for an hour lol. Just start with doing octaves on one string by hammering on with your left hand and then tapping the octave up 12 frets with your right index finger. And then add in your middle and ring finger
In this video, I learned what kind of pants I absolutely have to have.
he just said "its really easy"

also fodera provides you a really comfortable way to salp, tap, and pick, add that to wooten's way of playing, its really crazy!
This is how I learned how to tap. Thx, Vic!
I love how at the end he just played this ridiculous tap line and he's like "See how easy it is? No sweat at all, I could do this all day." I cried.

They actually got it from the man himself as a sample
holy shit i thought it was just the lighting that made them look like that
but sure enough, those pants are magical
i like the way he opened his mouth and keep the pro style through his bass
Incredible! This could solo all by itself, but imagine percussion and the rest added in there...
Victor is quite an inspiration to me as a bass players and im sure many others
I LOVE his trousers. Lol. Guess it's the times he lived in back then. But still. His trousers are cool and his play is unmatched.

I'm watching this, but it still can't register in my head. It's amazing!
Great bass player as well as a great teacher.
5:51 It was used as an intro in "Magbalik" song by Calla Lily

Picked this up on my own, I just saw guitar players tapping, the I decided to give it a try. It's called an ear, and passion for bass.
those songs sound perfect to listen to when relaxing :)

can't wait to go to heaven and give all my eternity to bass playing \m/

Why does he sound annoyed when he says "See how easy it is" at the end. Love this guy.
5:06 is the rhytym that sounds like Magbalik by the boy band named Callalily, the intro of the tune in the guitars similar to that hahaha
Hey Filipinos, what you are looking for is at 5:22. Thanks
I LEARNED A LOT, THANKS VICTOR
He's a king! :D I really love this dude :D Victor was the reason I started playing ^^
Well basically from what I know you take your middle finger and pinch the string off of your thumb using only your right hand.

At 5:52, a G# is a WHOLE STEP up from F#; not a half step. Just so there's no confusion. Keep rockin' it, Victor!
It's the first time that I see this video...but it's fantastic!
me gusta la actitud de victor, siempre diciendo que es facil y eso es bueno te da confianza y seguridad de que tu al igual que el por muy profesional que es tu tambien lo puedes hacer. todos podemos hacer lo que el hace como el lo hace es solo practicar.

It's easy, and one of the neat things about it is its creativity. It looks like he's playing a piano
I have struggled with this often. I found that the biggest factors are sting size (smaller works best) but there's also action. the lower the action, the louder sound you'll get.
Man, those pants are AWESOME!!!
that bass sounds sooo good
Haha, i love the "see how easy it is" right at the ending ^^
looking forward to seeing him next week in stuttgart...
Ruben Pfeffer just poped into my head dancing salsa
es el mejor que vi hasta ahora!
Ok. Victor, I dont see yet on "How easy it is", but I do have fun watching you, and I'll try.
Its amazing how short it takes to get that right
He explains music so well.

"See how easy it is?" Hahaha
hinihintay ko mga pinoy dito na mag comment yung galing sa fb reel 🤣

LOL It actually reminds me of the type of music you hear during the weather forecasting on TV. Especially at 3:08.
you have grate vice and tha string string ballance ... raspiecKT to your creation!..
those magic pants made him so good with bass!
Holy 3:06-3:22! that's probly the best part of the whole solo.
i love it when he just stops and says..."have fun!"
when he explains it, it all seems possible after a month of practice. Then he says "and then you wanna expand on that..." and he blows your mind.
Now I know magbalik of callalily band in the Philippines came from
i think he´s great and he looks pretty cool.
Wooten, Les Claypool and Flea are my favorites
dont You just love the ease he is doing it with

5:32 This is the intro of the song called "Magbalik" by Callalily here in the Philippines. hahaha!
He means that you need to lift the finger that you are playing the melody with, when you are getting to that string on the chord
@bluesruley2k
Man, you don't need an 8000$ bass to sould like that. You won't get the certain flavour of the sound, but you will be able to make it sound good, however if the electronics on your bass is passive, then you need an amp for that
I love the plena groove
that shit at the end was sum beautiful stuff....
His bass is like another appendage. He's been playing since he was about 5.
What a class bass player, he dosen't get notice much, but I strongly suggest you see him and his band live. He's just that good.
Speed also depends on having a good bass with good action on the frets...less work and more freedom, plus a good bass amp, good compressor helps. but loving to make music is it.

I always like to think of techniques as being easy, because then you have a head start at learning them
Daanngggggus
5:06 is the rhytym that sounds like Magbalik by the boy band named Callalily, the intro of the tune in the guitars similar to that haha
I love this guy. More inspiration right there =)

A band from the Philippines, Callalily, stolen your melody at 6:19 and use it as an intro for the song "Magbalik" 😂.
That tune sure is a pinky workout wow.
