@@TheDustyaman, that sounds more like it. I'd think that a CX-5 should be able to hit mid to low 6 seconds to 60 near sea level on 93 octane fuel. On 91 my XC60 T6 AWD can hit about 5.7 seconds stock but Volvos also cost a lot more. What Dave was describing with the braking into corners sounds a lot like what I tend to do with my left foot when I want my old Subaru to rotate. Very cool.
I own a 2014 CX-5 AWD, and I TOTALLY LOVE it. Everything you hear is 100% true. Very zippy and precise. Plenty of power, and a fantastic gearbox that uses the power extremely well. Consistently great gas mileage, even if you step on it a lot - which I do. Corners like the finest sports cars. Utterly reliable, not a single problem or repair needed. Only 2 downsides exist. Road/Cabin noise (now fixed, in later models) and almost no towing. I was praying so hard this refresh would have more towing capability... They did everything else I wanted, even Android Auto... but no. Same pathetic 2000 lb towing capacity. DAMN! So now I'll (very reluctantly!) have to sell mine. Likely get an older GX 460.
It's about damn time this car got decent power. It was soooooo sluggish all these years. With as many people who bought them, I'm sure at least half that many passed for something with more power. I know I did! Now, this car will in the mix for many more people. Not me though, I'm super thrilled with my XC40.
Best looking ride in the segment. Looks better than most actually in the luxury category as well. A CR-V doesnt come close to touching the CX-5, especially with Honda's recent reliability woes.
The Adventure Mazda Also, the CR-V looks like a frumpy mommy-mobile compared to the CX-5. It’s actually embarrassing that the CR-V is even in the same class.
Thats like not buying a house because you don't like the shower curtain. News flash...you can get ANY curtain you want in the aftermarket...AND it will be better quality. There are shops literally DEDICATED to upgrading factory radios. Alpine, kenwood, pioneer will always be better than a factory "premium" Lol system
TheeJoeyLee this is exactly why I require it on certain vehicles. I used to install as a side gig & worked for an installer part time & if you can find me any installer that will touch the latest CX-5s please let me know. If you ever talk to Crutchfield techs about a lot of the recent vehicles or search them on their website you will see that there aren’t any recommended suggestions for replacement. All of my other vehicles I have already installed aftermarket systems along with Compustar remote start systems.
@@theejoeylee Dude its 2019, most car radios STAY in the car because they are integrated. Why would you want to get rid of a perfectly functioning stereo that sticks out of the dash? Thats a nightmare to change out. Your way of thinking is outdated.
Great video! 👍 Looks like I’ll be giving the CX-5 Turbo a look once I’m done with my 2015 Forester XT. The turbo is gone in the Forester, and like many, I love those high torque gas engines. The CX-5 could be the one!
We used devices like that on diesel turbos back in the day. We would use a wastegate actuator to control the flap. I always wondered why something so simple never made its way into a gas engine.
Alan Holmes Yeah that’s the problem with Mazda. Unless you live in a major metropolitan area then there probably isn’t a Mazda dealer nearby. You don’t see many Mazda dealers in small metropolitan areas.
I think it's abt time to upgrade to a white 2019 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve from my old 2014 Grand Touring. This will be my next car for sure, can't wait!
Drove the BMW X3 and Volvo Xc40 - direct competitors, and there was no comparison. Quieter, faster, better ride, tighter steering, better braking, acceleration, interior, options, engine sound, torque... and the list goes on. For thousands less. Mine rocks in the snow and when the summer comes it has the best AC on this side of the planet. Throw in the Bose stereo and it’s one of my favorite cars to drive, regardless of price.
Nathan seems a nice, engaging bloke to test cars for us. We've just committed to an Akera model (equates to your Signature) here in Australia after dilly-dallying around trying to decide with what to replace our 2010 Subaru Outback 3.6R. Until the turbo was added, the CX5 couldn't get neat the Subaru's performance. It also needed to match or better the nice inclusions of our top of line Outback and bring new tech to the equation - I think we've made a great choice and eagerly await delivery of the Mazda come late June
I don't think they did "literally" tear out the engine from cx9 and put it in the cx5. That would be an odd manufacturing process! I enjoyed the review and it gives a more comprehensive overview than others. Thanks!
I have the Mazda CX5, it's the best car I have ever owned. Whenever this bad boy dies I will purchase another one. I absolutely love it, I have almost 9k miles on my 2019.
Not sure how this is a Honda CRV killer when you have to step up to the GRAND TOURING RESERVE AWD trim at $36,165 just to get the turbo engine. Not to mention that to get the turbo engines full power you need 93 octane fuel. In some States, such as in Colorado, the octane level tops out at 91.
Drove the new CX-5 and the new Forester one after the other a few days ago, and although the CX-5 handled a little better on dry pavement, the Forester was clearly and immediately obviously better at AWD, and handling in ice and snow. And now I own a 2019 Forester Touring. 🤷🏻♂️
Mazda keeps on improving and making cars worth the money you pay for. And unlike Rav4 and CR-V which are great crossovers, Mazda CX-5 has luxury feel to it in comparison. Mazda designers deserve an award.
i bought the CX-5 back in 2012, just in its 1st year when it came out....I owned it over 3 years and it drove well..I think my average MPG was over 33...unbelievable....However, it did feel little bit plastic-ky....the passengers seat had a rattle that the dealership was unable to fix..it drove me kinda nuts.....the suspension felt kinda hard, and the clutch (I had a manual) felt very tight. The side mirrors were little bit shaky when driving making it little bit hard to see everything well (came from the right suspension I think). but otherwise, it never had any issues and it drove well...During my ownership, there were no re-calls, nothing...although it was a brand new model, it worked well. one day, i got to drive a 2 door Wrangler....i fell in love with it, bought a new one and sold my CX-5...i never looked back, the wrangler felt so solid, everything worked, no rattles, nothing plastic-ky, and the sound of the V6 just sounded perfect..:-).....I do however think of my CX-5 sometimes...it served me well, but I wouldnt buy it again.
Bought one yesterday but black. Just dropped into the dealer to test drive and then go drive an NX and an RDX but never got to Lexus or Acura. Bought one of the only two Signature models on the lot.
Thank you Nathan for giving True and honest about Subaru Capability in Winter driving. I know that Cx5, RAV4 and Crv have better styles and good looks than Subaru, but I prefer Subaru over those cars in bad weather conditions. Better styles and Good looks can not save me from Stranded some where.
Ed Hayes the 2.5 is fine in the Forester. I own a 2019 Forester sport and haven’t had any issues with the engine performance. I think the turbo is just an insecurity thing.
@@JPurvis10 I disagree as I have had four Subarus: two turbos and two N/As. All are great in the snow but the N/A are underpowered, especially at altitude in mountains. After the last N/A Subaru, I said no more of them.
Test drove the mid level cx5 three years ago. But was not happy with the performance or handling. Ended up buying the Kia sportage sx turbo. Much better performance handling and good gas mileage. Just hit 20,000 miles and no major issues or regrets.
The only issue I can see with the new 2.5t engine in this car is the mileage range. I have a 2016.5 and only get 275-300 miles before needing to fill up. With this it has the turbo and AWD and basically the same gas tank.........looking at 250 before needing gas. That sucks.
Excellent review. On my 2.2 diesel the GCV+ makes the car do a little shimmy/lurch when I go over a pothole while cornering a little harder. Once you get used to it it's kinds fun, but probably shouldn't happen.
That engineer sounds like "Dr. Ian Malcolm. " Life uhhh... finds a way." "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
@@raullopez2949I believe the only reason the Subaru Forester XT with turbo had low take rates due to the fact it required premium gas. If they design one with lower compression that will take regular gas, then they will have a winner.

If Mazda can hit the performance numbers with the new CX-5, I think they are going to be providing excellent value for people who prioritize performance and handling.
Non luxury SUV with Luxury price tag..
@@user-hi1xc3pn1e our cx9 is extremely nice looking on the interior. I would say it is the most luxurious looking SUV in its class of non luxury vehicles. We picked up ours brand new for 38,000 in 2018 with the highest trim level and awd.
I just got a forester XT. And that amount of power is great. However their is still something so special about the confidence of driving a Subaru in the snow.
Nice suv! Have always liked the styling of mazdas. Nice to see them finally use a well deserved turbo in this platform. Can't wait to see an updated in depht review and maybe even a gold mine hill video!! 👍
This is definitely a CRV killer
But not a Toyota RAV4 killer?
you are talking performance or s a l e s ????
How is this car a crv killer??..this is a compact suv ..so the priorities are :driver and passenger room ,trunk space,FUEL ECONOMY , good enough performance. Reliability ,residual value, crv beat cx5 in every single one but handling and maybe 0 to 60 .if you want performance and handling like a priority then you dont buy a cheap compact suv..instead you buy an sport car ...compact suv are family haulers..soccer mom cars ..etc .thats why crv and rav4 are the best selling ..
Anna Zalewska PERFORMANCE... For someone who doesn't want a rolling couch....
tatoo99999 Perhaps you're not familiar with the CRV's most recent reliability issues with the engine
Have 2019 gt reserve, white, parchment interior, turbo, zoom zoom! Mazda has done it's homework. My first cx5 was a 2014. ; )
Dave Coleman is the man!
Absolutely would buy this over the Cr-v, especially with Honda’s oil dilution problems.
Chris Jacks oil-dilution myth you mean.
You Honda boys can’t accept your precious brand might have a serious and annoying issue. www.consumerreports.org/car-repair-maintenance/honda-delays-cr-v-turbo-engine-fix-details-rollout-plans/
I like how the explained the turbo and showed the engine. Awesome!
I'm glad that they included cupholders on the engine cover.
How are you not cold!!? Haha
Awesome that they put this engine in the cx-5, I think I've found my new SUV 😊
'cause he just got out of a nice, warm car and will jump back in again after finishing talking LOL
What Dave was describing with the braking into corners sounds a lot like what I tend to do with my left foot when I want my old Subaru to rotate. Very cool.
Best tfl video in awhile! Great job!
Agree! This will be my dream car!!
It's about damn time this car got decent power. It was soooooo sluggish all these years. With as many people who bought them, I'm sure at least half that many passed for something with more power. I know I did! Now, this car will in the mix for many more people. Not me though, I'm super thrilled with my XC40.
Yay a Nathan review!!!!!!! In the snow!!!!!
I wish every reviewer featured car engineer interviews. Mazda's explained the technology pretty well.
Now Subaru definitely needs to bring the turbo Forester back.
Man I'm cold just watching this video. Beautiful scenery though. I would like to experience snow just once.
This looks much nicer than the CX-7 I had years ago...which was a blast to drive. I also had a couple of Mazda 3's...which were fun too. Zoom-Zoom!
Mazda's are so underated, are sales relatively low due to availability of dealerships or branding. Cause this CX5 kills the competition
Mazda is now on the list. I don’t even consider vehicles that don’t have CarPlay or Android Auto.
Chad .Mazda would definitely be happy to know that you have considered them .. lol stupid
I bought the 2018 cx 5 GT last year. I'm very happy with it so far
MAZDA ALL THE WAY!!!!!
I really hope Mazdas can sell as well as Honda and Toyota, because they really deserve it. - From a former Rx-8 and current 2018 Cx-9 owner.
We used devices like that on diesel turbos back in the day. We would use a wastegate actuator to control the flap.
I always wondered why something so simple never made its way into a gas engine.
Mazda needs a larger dealership network. Very interested in this but the closest dealer to me is like 85 miles away 😳
Alan Holmes you’ll only need to go there once. These are reliable cars and easy to service yourself.
Alan Holmes Yeah that’s the problem with Mazda. Unless you live in a major metropolitan area then there probably isn’t a Mazda dealer nearby. You don’t see many Mazda dealers in small metropolitan areas.
Do it any way
Worth to drive to get one
Just bought a 2020 CX-5 Signature with all them bells and whistles. It was made to order so still waiting for it to arrive at the dealer.
Eeyyyyy Whistler in BC, or known as Squamish! Beautiful spot and an equally beautiful car!
Definitely scenic, but I prefer a drive in the summer on the Coquihalla ;)
I drive a v8 Lexus for the last 12 years, but I'm thinking about switching to CX5. It's a pretty nice car for so much less.
You dress like a Canadian. Short sleeve shirt & a toque lol. What will I wear today... Short sleeve shirt & a toque lol
At last, we have NATHANNN!
i bought the CX-5 back in 2012, just in its 1st year when it came out....I owned it over 3 years and it drove well..I think my average MPG was over 33...unbelievable....However, it did feel little bit plastic-ky....the passengers seat had a rattle that the dealership was unable to fix..it drove me kinda nuts.....the suspension felt kinda hard, and the clutch (I had a manual) felt very tight.
I have a 2016 CX-5 and it’s mostly excellent except for the infotainment. This car fixes that issue and appears better in every way. Nice going Mazda.
I'm glad to see that driving on winter tires didn't cause you to spontaneously combust.
About time they put a turbo in it! The wife had a 2014 cx5 had awesome looks but no power
Bought one yesterday but black. Just dropped into the dealer to test drive and then go drive an NX and an RDX but never got to Lexus or Acura. Bought one of the only two Signature models on the lot.
I hate when reviewers say “frankly”. I literally want you to be frank about everything during a review. That’s the whole point!
If only we could still get a performance engine in the Forester :(
Ed Hayes the 2.5 is fine in the Forester.
Tucson and this one look so badass
I live on SoCal, so awd is not necessary, offer the 2.5 for the sport or touring and I'll get rid of my boring sedan.
Pick my new one up tomorrow cant wait
Test drove the mid level cx5 three years ago. But was not happy with the performance or handling. Ended up buying the Kia sportage sx turbo. Much better performance handling and good gas mileage. Just hit 20,000 miles and no major issues or regrets.
This one will be interesting to have a look at,..thanks Nathan.
Awesome car
Design ranking for me from best to least is Mazda, Honda, Toyota, subaru, Ford, Nissan in this class. Love the mazda design.
The only issue I can see with the new 2.5t engine in this car is the mileage range. I have a 2016.5 and only get 275-300 miles before needing to fill up. With this it has the turbo and AWD and basically the same gas tank.........looking at 250 before needing gas. That sucks.
Really? I generally need a bathroom break way before driving 250 miles :P
mazda's are great value for money. not to mention they always have top notch interiors.
This was a great video with tons of explanations and info. Great job
Those snow tires he has on that cx5 are excellent
Excellent review.
On my 2.2 diesel the GCV+ makes the car do a little shimmy/lurch when I go over a pothole while cornering a little harder.
Once you get used to it it's kinds fun, but probably shouldn't happen.
Fantastic!
Excellent review. We will make a hoser out of you yet
As long as the fuel and oil don’t try to make babies, this will be amazing!
I bought one, just love it.
That engineer sounds like "Dr. Ian Malcolm. " Life uhhh... finds a way." "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
This is what the Forester Sport should have been
Couldnt agree more.... Subaru drop the turbo in the Forester while other manufacturers add a turbo! Dissapointing from Subaru.
Jay S1NZ I think they will sell either the Forester XT or a turbo Crosstrek once they realize that people do buy turbo crossovers
@@raullopez2949I am hoping you are right!!! Fingers crossed.
@@raullopez2949I believe the only reason the Subaru Forester XT with turbo had low take rates due to the fact it required premium gas. If they design one with lower compression that will take regular gas, then they will have a winner.
good job mazda for listening to mazda owners to put a turbo on in CX-5! the look and the design of the car is really nice and compared to its competitor.. keep it up mazda!
Take that Toyota RAV4!! Nathan loves how the CX drives and loves the driving dynamics more.😁
I would 100% choose this over any car in the segment
