      They exist for a reason, some ppl really need it. Maybe they don't have WiFi at home or maybe they work driving... but realistically, if you have WiFi at home and your work/study place offers WiFi, you do not need unlimited. You probably would be fine with 30gb if you enjoy watching movies on the bus home.
      And if you try to tell me how unsafe public hotspots are, I will tell you to put a tinfoil hat and a hazmat suit bc might as well protect from any danger ever

      @TeclaTorta There are a few problems with public wifi, not least of which is the ease of sniffing your data and stealing info or log ins that way. Beyond that, many employers have a clause in their digital access policies that allows them to access anything you've accessed on their network or devices. I prefer heavily not to be subject to that if possible. Necessity is a factor though.

      Public wi-fi is fine (even online banking or such) as long as you ensure the website is secure. These days browsers will bring up confirmation if it isn't, or even just outright deny access to the site altogether.
      Another alternative is to use a VPN. With a [n encrypted] VPN it won't even matter whether or not you encounter a rare/unlikely unsecured website.
      Lastly, between how rare it's always been and how modern security has made these options less viable, random public wi-fi is 99.99% safe even if you're a complete idiot and don't don't check for secured website connection. People are far more likely to be victim to phishing attacks or malware or targetted social engineering attacks, which have nothing to do with the wi-fi.

      @@user-or4rk3mc9p if the wifi is compromised in an attack like a rogue network or rogue captive portal it most definitely is not safe to use bank apps. TLS and encrypted tunnels are only as secure as both endpoints. This applies to VPNs as well.

    • @nezzee
      @nezzee 2 месяца назад

      @@user-or4rk3mc9p the problem is, most users are not going to be smart enough to be vigilant with a man in the middle attack such as redirecting to a phishing site with a bank login and certificate for a very similar looking website to the site you are trying to go to, or just straight up convincing the user to install it's CA certificate which will allow them to use THEIR encryption certificate to view all of your traffic in an encryption they can read before forwarding to the real site. It will show as a lock that it's encrypted, but doesn't mean it's encrypted to the site you are accessing.
      Heck, some malicious wifi before was devious enough to capture automatic check for update traffic of commonly used applications, and spoof an "update available" for them to download, which would be malware.
      Finally on top of that, there is always the possibility of unknown zero day exploits that your PC connecting to the network allows for the attacker to run against your computer.
      All these are not always the most common, but yeah, there is a lot more than just unencrypted traffic being potentially sniffed.

      Even though I use way more gigs than the average person in a month, it's because of this reason. The only time I have reason to ask for the WiFi of a restaurant or something is if I'll be there for a long time, plus most work places where I live won't give WiFi access to anything other than authorised devices (company laptops, computers, work phones, ect.) There's another wrinkle yet: data envelopes. Data isn't just sent over the internet by itself, it comes wrapped with metadata like how much data, what kind of data, etc. Each network protocol sends enveloped data using the next more generic protocol, until the data is finally sent by the Internet Protocol (IP). Envelopes in envelopes, like some amazon packages lol
    Then, there's the fact that large data gets chunked up, which means more envelopes need to be used. In all, it can be as much as a 10% increase in the amount of bytes sent "over the wire".

      I completely disagree, I have a limited 5GB plan, and barely use 2GB a month. Literally because of what is stated on this video, I'm always connected to Wi-Fi. Also there are countless plans that don't charge you over the GBs they just slow your data down (like mine) and at least Android phones literally have a setting for you to set up data warnings.

My mother also lives in the middle of no where which barely has cell service and no Internet options available even for an upfront cost.

      I bought for my phone outright so I can do a prepaid plan. 6.5 gbs a month for $25. I usually don't use more than 50% of that a month. I'm never really concerned about it, I just get on wifi ehen available and use things like "data saver" on RUclips for example.
      Service is just as good as my wife's who has unlimited. The only major issue I've ever had was using my phone internationally. There is simply no good option, not even temporarily paying extra. You're pretty much stuck trying to find wifi

    I use pay as you go plan and I use maybe 1-3 GB a month. I work from home though and my outskde usage is pretty low because I only go out to socialize and not use my phone. I pretty much just use it to look for directions or look at restaurants or food pictures.

    • @MsHojat
      @MsHojat 2 месяца назад

      Damn how do you get a decent pay as you go plan that is still cheap if you use 1-3GB per month? Is it just a tiered system? (ex. 0-500mb 10$/mo, 500-1.5 GB 15$/mo, 1.5-5 GB 20$/mo.). Maybe list your provider?
      Granted, I live in Canada so our options are trash. The best true pay-as-you-go option I could find works out to 110 USD per gigabyte. Granted we do have 25 USD/mo plans for like 10-20 GB (if you do your research and look for a sub plan), but that's subscription, and it's hard to get any good plan that goes below 11 USD. Most Canadians pay a ton more, I think in the 60$/mo range.

    • @JohnPMiller

      In the US, most unlimited plans cost around 65€/month. My son was using his French plan in the US that gave him 25GB/month of roaming for 20€ (plus unlimited in France), and I got him a limited US plan for 14€ so that he would have both a French and a US number.
      If you think mobile plans are expensive, home Internet is worse here. Most people are paying over $100/ month. I pay 52€/month for 60 Mb/s download & 6 Mb/s upload.

    Nah, i listen to youtube videos throughout the day at work, and i dont have a VPN on my phone so im not tryna sign in to every sketchy public wifi that's nearby. My unlimited data plan gives me 100gigs before the cap, and it's like 10 bucks a month more than the next level down.
    That's worth it to me to have the freedom of literally never even THINKING about how much data ive used.

    However it's not average use that matters but maximum use - since that's when data often matters most. Example: if you run out of data in a regular month the worst that can happen is that you can't stream youtube on the bus. If you run out of data on the other hand you're out of luck.
    (However you can also try to use less data or pay extra only that month etc - but still: average use is not as important as maximum use if your use fluctuates a lot)
