  • © Curb Records Sawyer Brown music video song off of Six Days on the Road ablum released in 1997
    Lyrics
Well I pulled out of Pittsburgh rolling down the eastern seaboard
I've got my diesel wound up and she's running like a never before
There's a speed zone ahead but all right, I don't see a cop in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
I got ten forward gears and a Georgia overdrive
I'm passing little white lines and my eyes are open wide
Just passed a Jimmy and a White, I've been passing everything in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
Well it seems like a month since I kissed my baby goodbye
I could have a lot of woman but I'm not like some of the guys
I could find one to hold me me tight,
But I could not make believe it's right
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
Well the ICC is checking on down the line
I'm a little overweight and my log books are way behind
But nothing bothers me tonight, I can dodge all the scales all right
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
My rigs a little old but that don't mean she's slow
There's a flame from her stack and the smoke's rolling black as coal
My home town's coming in sight, if you think I'm happy your right
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
Six Days On The Road and
I'm gonna make it home tonight

Back in the day, I ran into them and their touring crew. Really great guys that actually spoke to a few of us drivers. I was fueling beside the buses and they brought over a pass to the show that night. Got to stay backstage and watch a great show. Sometimes being in Nashville has great benefits.

It ain't about the video, its about the lyrics. We don't see video driving our rigs down the road. We hear the song and I can tell you this trucker is singing this loud and proud heading home.

I met him doing a solo gig at the Lumberyard in the late 80s early 90s. I took him to breakfast after the show and we talked and talked til the rooster crowed. I took him back to his vehicle and dropped him off, I've prayed and prayed for his rehab out of alcohol and or drugs if they existed?? I'm so glad that he did get sober! I told him that I was widowed to DWI in 1987.

Love it! Played bass in a country/rock band 4 nights a week in the Sac, Ca valley near Travis AF in the 70's. Couldn't sing worth shit but when everyone was shit-faced in the 4th and 5th sets the lead guy humored me and let me sing a few. This was my big one. By that time of the night and after a lot of free drinks it was damn hear this much fun. Would love to go back there just for a night. Kick ass!

agapesweetie Thank you for recognizing Dave Dudley. Dave had a long and colorful career. He introduced trucking to country music. ''Six Days On The Road'' was his first record, released in 1963.
When we think of cowboy songs, we think of Gene Autry. When we think of train songs, we think of Hank Snow. And when we think of trucking songs, we think of Dave Dudley.
If you listen quietly, you can hear him spinning in his grave, any time he hears brown-nosers like this herd of Northern Canadian moose trying their damnedest to sound like some kind of real country.
Dave was born May 3, 1928 and died December 22, 2003, but not before leaving the country music and trucking industries with a lifetime of the best of contemporary country music and trucking songs that will last for generations to come.
"There's another town coming in sight.
If you think it's Pittsburgh, you're right!
Six days on the road and I ain't left Pittsburgh yet."
      Welcome home, Dave!

I've lived this life for over 25 years and VERY PROUD OF IT.
    I drove my 1st truck in '91.
Sawyer Brown should have did the song the original way..."I've been taking little white pills and my eyes are open wide"
This song is about truck drivers and not one truck in the video.

That makes me happy! Better days and good times when every thought or word wasn't scrutinized.

Saw these guys when they pulled into the Flying J in Troutdale Oregon. I had my son who was just an infant in a front carrier while we were fueling our rig. One of the guys gave my boy a Sawyer Brown Hat. This is a great song... but video had nothing to do with Trucking.

This is an absolutely GREAT version, but it MUST be followed or preceded by the version by The great Dave Dudley from Pulaski, Wisconsin!

I'm glad they changed the drug reference. There are actually people who don't do drugs. I used to travel for a living. I was home one weekend a month. Whether a truck driver or a musician or a traveling construction worker - it's relatible. Love the song.

This reminds me of the time I blew a scale, out of class, in upstate NY with a Ford dually and gooseneck trailer. I was three miles from the exit and hauled ass to get to it. Never saw a cop behind me and made it to pick-up unscathed.

If you ever listened to real country, you probably still wouldn't like it because this shit ain't country. It's not even close.
