    Great video on the fisher space pen. I’ve been using the fisher space pens since 1976 that’s 44 years. I’ve owned several models over the years and they’re all great. And yes I still use them to this day. They’re awesome pens. I have use them in -10° in a warehouse freezer doing inventory. And also in very wet conditions and the ink won’t run.

    I have been in the military for over 13 years and have used the Write in the Rain pens (with fisher space pen ink cartridge) and their notebooks almost since the beginning.
    I can attest to the durability and longevity of the ink cartridges. I have written with them in the rain, sub-freezing temperatures, over 120 degree temperatures in the desert, etc. The pens are not as "grippy" or smooth as your standard gel ink pens, but there is nothing better when you need to write no matter what.

    It is the only pen I use at work. They don’t fade too badly when the sun shines on them either. Sunlight causes some ink disappear. When you work and write out doors, literally nothing compares. If the media you write on gets wet, dirty or greasy they still write adequately. They write on many plastics. SP’s hold a lot of ink and last quite some time (about the same as a Parker). The refill fits any pen using either a Fisher or Parker body, so choose your favorite pen style.

    "$20 is expensive for a pen"
    The space pen is pretty much the BIC of non-disposable pens. Most people who carry a refillable pen will usually have something that's in the $70 range some $100. People who do a lot of writing at a desk, may have a $200-$500 pen. Then past that you get into the world of either antique or luxury pen collecting. These can go for thousands or millions of dollars.

      Lol to this snobby and inaccurate comment! 😄This video is about a pen that writes UNDERWATER and at any angle, can be picked up after decades and still write with the same ink cartridge, folds down to fit in your trouser pocket without jabbing or leaking, AND has an elegant design. Good luck replicating all those features with an exorbitant fountain pen OR a Bic! 😂
      A more Bic-like comparison for the amazing writing capabilities of the Fisher bullet space pen would be the compact disposable plastic Rite-in-Rain all-weather pocket pen with NON-refillable ink at 2 for $16, or the standard-sized uniball Power Tank with refillable pressurized ink at 20 for $20 (a steal!).
      For people who geek out on design, the uniball Power Tank is actually a pretty good-looking pen, but there's no doubt that the Fisher bullet's compactness, sleek metal form, and designed-for-space backstory have a cool factor that make it uniquely suited to ALL environments, from every day carry to boardroom!

    I journal daily. I used a Fisher "Space Pen" for about a year. After about a year, I decided to read through what is written that year, and the ink on most of the page had faded so severely, that it looked more like dark umber, than the black it was supposed to be.
    If you're using it for strictly utilitarian purposes (grocery lists, work related writing, etc.), I'd recommend it, because it really can write through water and greasy surfaces. It seemed to write better on wet surfaces than it did on oily surfaces, but it did ok.
    However, if you plan on using it for any kind of writing you want to keep around, like writing that's sentimental (birthday card for the kids, journaling, captioning picture in a family photo album, etc.), I'd choose a different pen. The ink faded so severely and quickly, that it's be virtually indecipherable after three or four years. That is, of course, if the fading continues at the rate of observed in the first year of use.
    That was nearly 30 years ago, so maybe they've changed the ink formula. But, I wouldn't hold my breath. They're cool, but the ink just doesn't last long enough for any sentimental writing you want to keep and pass down to future generations

    • @EdTchoi
      @EdTchoi  Год назад

      Very interesting as that's the first I've heard about the ink fading. It'd be interesting to hear from the folks at Fisher Space Pens to see if there's a reason why it fades or if it was a defect in the ink?

      Great question! The Fisher Space Pen has about 12,000 feet of ink (they use a write-out testing machine to determine this). Assuming you write about 6 feet a day, that would be equivalent to 2,000 days of continuous use or 5.5 years. This is of course based on ideal circumstances as the ink life may be shortened if you're a heavy writer or use absorbent paper. Thanks for watching and comment

    I've owned a Fisher space pen for 20 years- plus and still carry one daily. I even gave one to each of my top 30 executives. Unfortunately, the only drawback has never been addressed. That is the sections that are pulled apart to change the ink cartridge rely on friction, they aren't screwed together. I always thought the bullet pen's design hadn't changed since its rollout, but i just compared my 1979 model with my 2018 model and there are significant differences: the older bullet has a separate tiny ring at the tip of the case (where the cartridge point emerges). the older bullet has much less machining on the lower case section, and the horizontal striations are crosscut with vertical ones, unlike on the newer bullet. The engraved info on the cap of the older bullet is also different. Unlike the newer model, the old bullet only says "pen by Fisher USA" instead of "space pen by Fisher USA" as on the new version. Also, the newer bullet is about 2mm longer than the older one when closed.

    • @EdTchoi
      @EdTchoi  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comparison! Are you still using your 1979 model? Very cool that you were able to compare the two versions side-by-side. It'd be cool to see a picture of both pens!

    • @speedmastermarkiii
      @speedmastermarkiii 5 лет назад +1

      @@EdTchoi The 1979 model still has its original cartridge, and it still writes. However, the upper end of thecase has begun to split where the case screws together. Of course I have no intention of returning it to Fisher for free replacement . I keep it on display in its original plastic box.
      I also have a vintage AG-7 Fisher pen in its original box. That one is so old it doesn't even mention the moon. The illustration ( a color hand drawing, not a photo) on the glossy cardboard box is of an astronaut in Gemini-style spacesuit on an EVA while tethered to an Apollo command and service module that's orbiting earth. The documentation inside the box talks about the AG-7 being chosen by NASA for use in outer space by "our Apollo astronauts". Since the space pen first went up into space on Apollo 7 (an earth orbital mission) in October 1968 and the first moon landing was in July 1969, I suspect my AG-7 dates from late '68 or early '69, although I am unsure of when the AG-7 was first sold to the public, and whether the first version sold to the public had the side button (which mine does) , or if it had only the top button like the first AG-7 pens originally used by NASA.
      Edit: I just checked some reviews of new Ag-7 pens and discovered that my AG-7 is significantly different from ones sold today! My AG-7 has machining along the entire case, with vertical grooves on the upper case and half the lower case, while current AG-7 pens only have the lower case horizontal machining.

    I want so much to love this pen. It has a good hand feel, good weight, just plain looks sexy! However the ink is very blobby. I read about this before, with the suggestion that purchasing a new cartridge would not be blobby. Bought a new cartridge, it was blobby too.
    Ordinarily it would be a slight annoyance. However, being left-handed and dragging your finger through the wet blob, smears the page and your hand. Reminiscent of a poor quality Bic pen, they were blobby too. If you’re left handed, I would give this pen I miss. It makes a smeared mess on the page when used by a left handed person.

    I have had three FS bullets for some years now. They write well, I personally prefer this ballpoint brand to others very well- known brands.
    The only downside I've found with the FS cartridges is that several of them often leave on the paper some ink smudges, so you have to be very careful with this problem, in order not to smear part of the text writen if you accidentally touch those smudges.
    In this video I've noticed those smudges in some letters written in the first text.
    Nevertheless, I'm happy owning my FS bullets, they're very nice !!

      Thanks for the feedback! Yes, there were a couple of times where that was a blotch of ink, but it doesn't seem to be happening as much now. I wonder if it's because it was new? Well, I haven't had this issue with all the FS cartridges I've had, but yes with several of them. I've also read recently the reviuws of some people, stating they had had this same problem; one of them even was advised to try out the fine point cartridge, so he would sort this problem out.
      It isn't a big issue to me, because I consider it's a good product, the lines written are fine, I like the smoothness and the very dark tone of these refills, and so on ...

      @@EdTchoi Hey thank you for your reply, I'm new to your channel. So I have a medium and a fine space pen cartage for my brass pen. A little background I've been using fountain pens as everyday pens for about 4 years. While I love them I'm finding more and more that they simply are not a convenient as having an always reliable ballpoint or roller-ball pen. My biggest issue is going places and the paper is so thin that the ink bleeds through. I started carrying my own thicker paper which solved the problem but then I was always carrying paper...so not convenient. I love brass not only for the look it gets when it ages but because of the antimicrobial self cleaning properties. Copper and bronze have this too. I found the wingback pen and decided that would make a great edc as the pen itself will outlast me, age with me and can be passed down. So I customized it with some wording. Being used to the deep flowing ink in a fountain pen I was worried about the ink. I ordered the space pen refills in medium and fine, didn't buy the bold. The medium is thicker then I'm used too but writes pretty smooth. The Fine is more the width I'm used to, but seems to drag a little more then I'm used too. That being said it is great to have a pen I can pull out and know it will just work no matter what. Are they as bold and smooth as a fountain or gel pen? No. Do they write well and serve the purpose they are intended? Yes. I use it for daily activities at work and school. I save my collection of fountain pens as an upgrade for special events or special writings. I'm overall happy.
      As a side note I have one of these bullet space pens and have to say the pen out of the entire space collection probably handles the worst. So if you want to experience the full glory of them, get one of the other models.

    • @EdTchoi
      @EdTchoi  4 года назад

      @@tophercaesar5375 great insight...thanks so much. I still haven't gotten into fountain pens, but I can see myself liking them, but I would agree that getting the right type of paper might be a pain which would not make it ideal as an EDC. On the side note of the bullet space pen, I've been noticing that it blotches once in a while and it's not as smooth as I would like it. I'm having similar issues with my Zebra X-701 which is also another pressurized pen. My theory is that the pressure increases the likelihood of blotching. Thanks again for taking the time and commenting as I appreciate the interaction. Cheers!
