  • The Olympus om-2s program, the grown-up Canon ae-1 program. smoother features, different ergonomics but in my opinion an all-around better shooting experience.

    The OM2sp is my go to camera… the spot meter program makes it perfect for street photography. The zuiko range of lens=perfection especially the F1.4 50, the 55 and the 85mm. All quirky but love em. I just sold a Leica MA since I exclusively use this Oly. Size wise is excellent for my hands. I don’t think the placement of the shutter and F stop on the lens is why people are not into Oly. Canon and Nikon were always leaders in the market shares commercially while the OM 1,2,3 & 4 were professional and reporter cameras due to the size. The OM10,20 etc were the commercial line. Canon and Nikon sold more units but advertised to do so. Oly was a niche and remains as such;)

    A quick search found me that on release a Canon AE-1P was probably $165 in 1981. I couldn't find a release price for the OM-2SP but the OM-2 in 1979 was listed for $515 for a chrome model. Might explain why the camera that handles nicer is less common, bet it sold way way less so theres less in the second hand market to find.

    Really love my OM-2SP! It takes a little to learn it's quirks but once you do it's really fast and accurate in use. One thing to mention is that it does eat batteries if left unused, but one trick I read is to say it into bulb mode when not using it as it does not use batteries at all. Nice video!

      Does this really solve the battery issue with your OM-2SP? Because I heard from others that the camera still draws power in Bulb mode.

    I have had both cameras. Both are great cameras. The Canon is better ergonomically if you have big hands. The Olympus was too small for me. If you have one of them and like it, keep it. They are just tools.

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  6 месяцев назад +1

      For sure, at the end of the day any camera is just a tool. Both are great options it just comes down to personal preference and shooting style.

    The idea of having the shutter speed around the lens mount, was so that you could adjust the aperture or focus or shutter speed all with one hand without having to take your eye away from the viewfinder. Very innovative idea and also made the camera that bit smaller, also the OTF (Off The Film plane) metering was another. I had a black OM2Sp but unfortunately it had a fault, I’d shoot a roll of film and only one or two frames would expose, also I found the film advance felt very rough compared to my brothers OM2n. I tried another OM2Sp so years later and found it felt the same, pity. I would buy an OM2n in black given the choice now, the OM3 would be nice but they’re rare and very expensive.

    • @graham_white

    I'd say the OM-10, OM-20, OM-30, OM-40 are probably closer to a "competitor" to the AE-1P. They are cheaper, more abundant and lighter than the OM-2SP. I still like how solid my OM-2SP feels, but it really is a bit of a brick that makes me wish for a lighter camera.

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  6 месяцев назад

      That’s fair. It has basically the same modes just a more ergonomic setup to the ae-1p which is what makes it similar. Like I said doesn’t mean there aren’t closer options available.

    I have the OM2s my late dad gave me some 20 yrs ago, but that one is sadly broken, something in the rewind mechanism crumbled, and that makes me sad, course that's such a great camera. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to repair it. I've looked for a new one, but here in Europe prices went thru the roof. €250 is a bit too much. If I'd add a 100 more, I could get an OM4Ti !!!
    That's the reason I bought OM40 (OM PC) YESTERDAY. Sure, it's not the same thing. But it had cost me only €50, and it works. That's all that matters.
    And I could never understand that intimidation of the shutter speed ring behind the lens, since all beginners use their cameras on full auto anyway...

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  6 месяцев назад +1

      I would hang onto that until you can get it repaired somewhere. It's worth it especially if it's a family heirloom. the 4ti is a great option for now! haha that's a good point. I agree, not sure why the placement throws people off but oh well I guess. Thanks for sharing!

    Is it the same camera if on the front it reads OM2 spot/program and not OM2S program? also do pretty much all lenses work with a program and auto mode?

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  6 месяцев назад +1

      most all Olympus brand lenses will work. (there may be very early model exceptions but would have to research) Non Olympus brand lenses probably won't allow you use of the auto mode but you can still shoot manual. I believe the only difference between the two cameras is the Spot feature. Meaning you can point center on what you want to expose for, half press, and then recompose your shot to what you want. This allows you to expose for shadows or highlights etc in a scene where there is a lot of contrast and the camera wants to compensate.
