- Go beyond the binary. EVERY BODY is Julie Cohen's revelatory investigation of the lives of intersex people. Only in theaters June 30.
EVERY BODY is a revelatory investigation of the lives of intersex people. The film tells the stories of three individuals who have moved from childhoods marked by shame, secrecy, and non-consensual surgeries to thriving adulthoods after each decided to set aside medical advice to keep their bodies a secret and instead came out as their authentic selves. Actor and screenwriter River Gallo (they/them), political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel (she/they), and Ph.D. student Sean Saifa Wall (he/him) are now leaders in a fast-growing global movement advocating for greater understanding of the intersex community and an end to unnecessary surgeries. Woven into the story is a stranger-than-fiction case of medical abuse, featuring exclusive footage from the NBC News archives, which helps explain the modern-day treatment of intersex people.

I am intersex, with AIS. I was born with no uterus or ovaries, no cervix and one kidney. I have one internal teste. When I first found out I was 18 (21 years ago) and the terms intersex and AIS were not taught to me. I didn’t even learn about my XY chromosomes until 3 years ago (age 36) when I took a 23 and Me test and a scientist emailed me to ask if I knew. It was so affirming though and really helped me accept myself in a whole new way. The world needs this documentary. I want to be more apart of this work. I live in the PNW and would love to help this movement somehow; to help teach people more about us! ❤
Yes, I agree. There are many things (including intersex) that should be taught and should be open, not hidden. There's not enough space here to tell you what all those things are. Although I wonder what made people (leaders?) decide it should be a secret or shameful in the first place. And who is it that needs to change??
I keep being struck by the open respect with which you share your story and your hope. You are someone truly precious ❤️
Just saw it this afternoon and it was LIFE CHANGING. I hope everyone goes. I learned so much, cried so much, it was wonderful.

Only two genders
@startrekmaniac1701 but where does xxy go and X (turner syndrome)? And those that their bodies essentially don't process testosterone so they are phynotypically female yet genotypically male? Although, it may not be crazy common, it's very real
Whether people know it or not, we need this movie. All of our understanding on what it means to be human is based on our own small experience and the experiences we see. We need the opportunity to see these experiences.
by why though?
@@thefunnychiptunemanbecause no one EVER talks about intersex conditions. I had never heard the word "intersex" until I was 18, and that's when it all clicked. 18 years I went not knowing I was intersex because my parents didn't disclose with me that I was ambiguous at birth. All those years of self hatred because I went through a male puberty when I thought I was supposed to be female. Feeling so ashamed of my own body, feeling ugly for not looking feminine, turning to self harm, eating disorders and attempting suicide because I didn't know how else to control something that was out of my control.
It's important for people to know that these conditions exist because I'm positive there's others out there that have had the same experience as me. There's kids that don't know why their bodies are changing on them, why they don't look the same as their other classmates, are disgusted and confused. The conversation is always focused on trans people, for once we need to discuss intersex conditions as well

To change our knowledge base we have to be exposed to things that challenge what we understand.

intersex conditions are a SUBSET of a much greater set of conditions caused by a certain set of physiological & genetic phenomena, which we could call "GENDER AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION VARIANTS", of which LGBTA are simply OTHER subsets... all of which constitute the famous percentage of the population which is LGBTIQA2S etc., and which they can never agree on (anywhere from 4% to 10%, based on what I've heard so far).
intersex conditions are identified simply by characteristics of the newborn baby, so you have a huge restrictive criterion right there. Why are genitalia the only thing that can possibly be determined by biological factors? Why do doctors not do the SAME KIND of studies on other LGBTAQ2S conditions? Is it because one group of conditions can be observed from the outside and the others have to be self-declared? Is it because older humans don't deserve the same amount of care and attention as babies? Why are genital variations (or genitalia-genome discrepancy) the only thing doctors are interested in?
Who is preventing those serious studies from taking place?
If we want to claim that we are born this way, why do we not agree to let RESEARCH prove it? It's probably as easy to research as the already well-known causes of intersex conditions.
Everybody agrees that genitalia are not the only GENDER characteristic. But nobody wants to name any of the others.
I've heard the stupid explanation that "Doing research implies that it's a disease". Really? Geneticists have done research on blond hair color, blue eyes, left handedness, and TONS of other non disease human variations.

There is no need for removing testes while still a child. A young adult can make that surgical decision for themselves once their gender becomes apparent to them. If it does, the person can make their own choice about their treatments.
