Interesting documentary!!! For anyone who is interested, folk metal isn't an European-only thing. In 1991 a Mexican band called Mictlan was formed. They mixed death metal with Aztec/Mayan folk. It's not a very well known band, it's very underground I guess, but it was one of the first (or maybe the first!) folk metal bands in Latin America. Currently in Mexico and South America there's a big scene of folk metal with both Native American and modern Latin America sound and themes. Amocualli, Yaotl Mictlan, Miquian, Kalaverahztekah, Camaxtli Yoxippa, Cemican, DelDesierto, etc from Mexico; Ch'aska, Guahaihoque, Tierramystica, Toccata Magna, Arandu Arakuaa, Arraigo, etc from South America. Middle Easten folk metal and Asian folk metal are also a thing. I don't know much about their history but there's a lot of good bands too. Myrath, AlNamrood, Narhajanam, Odious, Orphaned Land, etc from Middle Eastern; Nine Treasures, Bloody Tyrant, Chthonic, Black Kirin, Tengger Cavalry, Tang Dynasty, etc from Asia (Tang Dynasty is also from 1991, that's very curious!!!).
Talks about feeling old discovering folk metal at 16, around the same time as I did, when I was 23. (Crying in oldness). I think it was Tyr that was my first folk metal band, although it could have been Turisas. Great video, you need more views. So glad you delved into bands like Jethro Tull and Rainbow too. You're lucky in Europe in regards to folk metal, not much of it down here in NZ, although across the ditch in Australia a bit of a scene has forming for a few years. Also, is that nude man and the tent a scene from Bottom?
Hope you make a part 2 or a vid recommending other bands! 💜 I feel like it was a combo of 3 bands that got me into the folk/Viking/medieval metal genre. I remember hearing Enslaved’s “Havenless” while in HS like 10yrs ago in some TV documentary which led me to the metal archives site. From there I heard “oppi fjellet” by Storm& “hulde ann de kastelein” by Heidevolk& I just went down the rabbit hole from there. Now bands in the folk metal genre are pretty exclusively what I listen to lol just wish it was more popular so I had ppl to share music with 😂
It's like how 'Tuatha De Danann' sounds somewhat like like 'Two A Day Don-In'. Tuatha Gael would be something like People of/Tribe of Celts. In some countries like Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany using the Celtic languages is a more serious thing related to Pan Celtism than simply using folk elements and fantasy lyrics. I tend to differentiate between folk and fantasy. Eluveitie even got with university linguists and scientists to reconstruct a dead Celtic language. Eluveitie and especially Heilung and Wardruna are doing a completely different more serious thing, Heilung and Wardruna are more of the vein of modern neo folk, that stuff is doing something very new and different
I used to listen to some obscure Ukrainian radio station on the internet that played some pretty eclectic stuff like Hedningarna and Garmarna along with other neo folk bands. I heard Korpiklaani and began my folk metal investigation. Anyone who can have a metal song with a dueling guitar and flute solo (and totally pul it off) is a band I need to know. Folk metal is freakin’ awesome! 🤘🤘🤘
9:18 the title of the song is wrong, that is "Jesús de Chamberí" same title as the album. Pretty nice song... I totally love that whole album, it has a rock/blues sound mixed with folk, but as you said some songs have a little metal.
You know, the comparison to ska is super appropriate: it's tolerated by the larger community if semi-scoffed at, secretly enjoyed by more people than will admit without at least two drinks, and you can dance/jump to it without going home in a body bag. Very apt!
Great video, I fell in love with Folk Metal around 2010, I always liked heavy metal but also liked listening to some soundtracks of video games like Final Fantasy or Chrono Cross which were heavily influenced by celtic music; so when I discovered Folk Metal it was like "THIS IS IT!" and it is to this day my favorite metal sub genre. Hope you make the second part of this video, there are some great bands tha I love and you probably know that deserve some more exposure. PS: There's another spanish folk metal band that is really good called Saurom, you should check it out!
I mean, Eluveitie is pretty serious, they even worked with linguists at universities to revive a dead Celtic language, they more akin to Wardruna and Heilung in terms of not being a quirky fantasy band (except Wardruna and Heilung doesn't use distorted guitars...or guitars)
I knew it! I know Folk Metal, but I didn't know what the genre was. Thanks for the video, it actually gave me a lot of inspiration. I'm about to scour RUclips over a cold beer on my balcony.
Aiaiai not mentioning Eluveitie. Guess you sort of get a pass, since Slania came out in 2008, but still that makes it old enough to drink beer in most of Europe 😂
You are just scratching the surface with this video, you should check the bands "In Extremo", "Folkstone", "Cultus Ferox", "Kalevala", "Tanzwut", "Arkona", "Eluveitie"
Hello man. I'm Rikard Falk from the folk metal band Rådarna and I really like your video and share your love for folk metal. :)

I think arguably Sepultura contributed to South American folk metal with bits of 'Roots' and even Chaos AD as well.

This give me goosebumps. You stared the same way of me, Turisas and Oblivion. Just goosebumps❤
speaking about early folk metal... gary moore's Over The Hill and Far Away (and later covered by Nightwish) was released in 1987
Hope you make a part 2 or a vid recommending other bands! 💜

Really feel like Running Wild should have been mentioned as an early influence, especially the whole pirate thing.

Great video, but you forgot about Tyr, eluveitie, and orphaned land.

Aiaiai not mentioning Eluveitie.
Guess you sort of get a pass, since Slania came out in 2008, but still that makes it old enough to drink beer in most of Europe 😂
