He got sick on the morning of the show, they FLEW dragony's singer from germany immediately and he learned the entire set and made it in time to the show. ofc he made some mistakes but it was nuts that he managed to do that
Superb drummer _and_ incredibly quick learner. That's an extremely potent combination, but one not often demanded so I'm glad he was in the right place at the right time.
Huge fucking respect for Frank. Five hours of studying and then playing it all live for the FIRST time while headlining with a band he's never played with. Legend.
Dude steps in on last minute notice, takes five hours without a drum kit to learn and transcribe the live versions of the songs, plays on a different drum kit than what he is used to and absolutely nails it? That is seriously impressive and an absolute statement about him being a real pro at what he does. Also, we fans don't hear every show, every night, we truly don't notice things like that when we are out there having a blast. Live versions are always a bit different to the studio songs after all.
I was at the Brisbane show! 2 things: 1) You couldn't tell Frank was a fill in unless your ears are super tuned to drumming and styles. He NAILED it. As you said, the dude is good! 2) Electric Callboy deserved the main stage 2 years ago at Good Things so it was fucking amazing to see them play on it this year. As a headline on that stage too - so deserved. So much fun. Best set of the day. Bring 'em back soon 😉
So glad you made a video about this. It's such an insane story and I am sad I didn't get to see it live. It would be interesting to hear a little more of the background things that happened after Sum41 dropped out and EC ended up in the headlining role; like what other things you had to do to upgrade the set to a headliner. Overall sick video. Can't wait til this goes live so I can share it with my UK friends who were asking about this.
Believe it or not, it was extremely easy. The festival told us we were now headlining and since Sum 41's production was already rented and there, we could basically use whatever we wanted. The only things we really used that weren't originally in our set were the lighting towers and pyro, but that's it.
@@TankTheTech Pyro is no joke to work into a show though. You're being super humble saying it was no big deal but just introducing pyro in a safe way is a ton of work. Hats off to you and everyone involved in making it work.
@TankTheTech after seeing the show, you would never have known the pyro wasn't part of the original show. I legit shed tears seeing the shows progression over the the last 3 shows they have played here. It's truly a headline worthy act now!
I still maintain that despite their popularity sum 41 does not actually receive the kind of praise they deserve. Deryck and Frank especially are absolute masters at this point. Franks drum fills on some of their recent albums are sick as fuck, theres a lot of small details going on in the background that you might not pick up on at first. Theyre far from just some pop punk 2000s band, theyve done hard rock and alternative sounds, and they also had some fire guitar solos as well. Incredible band. Gonna miss them.
Totally agree with you. I think because of the timing in when they got big and their singles, they got lumped into the pop-punk stereotype even though they're way more than that.
Here to mention as well, they are genuinely such great dudes. I was a stage hand for one of their shows with the offspring and when we all went in for catering they were sitting around and i was sat by myself, they invited me over to their table and were awesome and super friendly
He absolutely killed it. I noticed during techno train something was slightly different (drum wise) Then was like “drummer has his shirt off…” “Is that frank zummo?” Then the band explained what was up.
It never ceases to amaze me how some musicians can do this. I have been playing guitar for 20 plus years, and the idea of something like this scares me. Hats off to those amazing musicians that are able to fill in to keep the train rolling.
That's literally how Zummo got the Sum 41 gig. Amazing dude, amazing drummer, always down to jam, and a fucking workhorse. And he hits those drums so goddamn hard!!!
People don't realise just how unbelievable and important the role of the drummer is to the band. It is so hard to replace that part with a stand-in. Frank is one of the most underrated but incredible drummers in the business, and he showed that throughout the tour events. Also shoutouts to the whole crew for getting making it all happen. True professionals.
I was at the show in sydney and ofc being a drummer I noticed the tiny little things. I leaned over to the singer of my band who I was there with and said "Man Frank can make these minor "mistakes" sound so bloody good and I've never been more jealous" he turned to me and said "And that's why he's up there and you aren't" 🤣 Monster roast but he couldn't be more right, Frank is an absolutely incredible drummer and musician and considering the little to almost no notice he KILLED IT no questions asked.
I’ve played drums for 20+ years and this scenario stresses me out so bad. It sounds like it went as well as it realistically could have gone. I like that you mentioned he didn’t hit all the little things in the first show because that would have been literally impossible. What he did is so impressive it’s insane. And the fans should be so grateful that the show went on. What an experience. Holy shit.
Hey mate, I was at the Sydney event, ECB were off the chain, really great show, the boys were so humble but they deserved that time slot. It was so hot, so muggy, and yall still brought it. Much love and respect
I’ve learned a set in two rehearsals, but was still massively nervous at the show. But 5 hours with no rehearsal is absolutely insane, I would have shit my pants and cried.
I have never been to a live show - local to international acts - that have been played exactly to the album. one of the things I love is hearing how the groups change things in the heat of the moment. I'd have loved to see this show because it's kind of like a mini-supergroup almost.
Don't get me wrong, it's pretty impressive he was able to do that in only 5 hours but let's be real, electric callboy songs are not particularly difficult for the drums
These kind of more improvised shows are the most memorable. If you tell someone you were at the EC show where the drummer from Sum 41 played, everyone will know which show you mean.
Went to the Brisbane show and had never heard EC prior and was completely impressed and have been obsessed all week listening to their catalogue. The guys absolutely blew Korn off the stage. And then to learn the backstory to Zummo having to fill in made it even more impressive!!! Please come back to Oz!!!! ❤❤❤
When you've been playing drums for so many years, doing something else while playing your drums almost becomes second nature to be honest. But still, Frank is a legend for pulling that off with such a short notice! Mad respect to him!
I was at the first one in Melbourne. The crowd loved it, and we all went off when EC played a bit of Sum 41 in tribute. After that snippet, the vibe was electric. Never seen a crowd react so well. So many people I know said that EC, not Korn was the highlight of the entire day!
I play in a worship band and moved from drums to bass and then to guitar and singing. So I often have the situation of teaching young drummer how to play with a band. You don't need to hit every single note and be a carbon copy of what you hear. Especially if you're kind of a beginner. It's about understanding what's important to the vibe of the song and keeping time. Nobody cares if you playing everything what I'd call flare. But they're gonna notice if you're asking more from yourself than you can offer. Leaving space isn't a bad thing when playing with others. That's something I often have to teach piano players who are generally very used to playing a solo instrument.
Was at the Sydney show, my mates and I were saying no one will ever see frank play for electric callboy again outside of this tour, and he absolutely killed it! Easily the best live act I’ve ever seen
20yrs ago, I saw Lars Fredrickson play guitar with Dropkick Murphys last minute. Nailed it. Even did all the vocal harmonies with Al and Ken. I’ll never forget it.
Saw their set in Brisbane and it was AMAZING, you all definitely pulled it off and the crowd was absolutely nuts ! Thank you for the wonderful experience 😁
This is what musicians do - help out if they can. I'm from a completely different musical world (brass band) but I've played with other bands last minute no rehearsal and other people have done the same for us. People who do this are the best people 👏
It was such a fun night and the set was amazing. Crowd when nuts when EC started playing. Also thank you for taking the time to chat and get a photo with me at The Brightside afterparty is Brisbane. Absolute legend Tank!
Kind of reminds me of a show I saw in 2018 or 19. Trivium was touring the sin and the sentence album with avatar and light the torch. Matt heafy had to fly back to Florida to be there for the birth of his kids and missed the last 3 shows of the tour. Instead of cancelling they got people to fill in for Matt’s guitar and vocals for a one of a kind show. Jared Dines filled in for Matt on guitar while Howard jones and Johannes from avatar did Matt’s vocals for the set. One of the coolest shows I’ve been to where the audience carried the band through their set while Howard and Johannes were learning the lyrics on the fly.
Being at the Brisbane show, and seeing electric callboy for the second time. They absolutely smashed it. Brang the energy, hyped the crowd, and was not sure how Korn we’re going to put on a better show. Callboy could of been the festival headliner for sure!! Great work.
What a great story, it is so nice when the music community come together to help each other out, but this does not surprise me as I know we are all pretty good folk!
I was at the show in Melbourne and I NEVER knew the smaller details were “off” and that show fucking off the chain. My life flashed before my eyes a few times in the pit and I was LIVING for it 🤣😍 Zummo KILLED that and so did the EC boys. I’m still pumped on adrenaline for it and it’s been a week or two. Haha
Crazy situation and I'm in awe at the level of professionalism everybody displayed! Huge W's for everybody involved! Also, congrats on the Nocturnal Awards win!
I saw Callboy at the Brisbane show. They were amazing. Frank absolutely nailed it. My wife had never heard Callboy before and she was an instant fan. As a massive Korn fan, Callboy stole the festival!
You definitely deserved your award for videos like this. I always like how you talk so openly about your touring work and issues like tipping and Ticketmaster's monopoly.
Sum 41 have been my favorite band of all time for about 15 years now, I’ve gotten lucky in the past couple of years to see them live three times before they’re done and they’re so incredible. This is awesome to see Frank pulled this off for them.
First and foremost, I hope everything with David is alright, and I hope he is doing better. Secondly, I'm glad that the entire situation at least had a great resolution. Kudos to everyone working together and just absolutely nailing the shows. Thirdly, and I'm not just saying this because you're sponsored, but I absolutely LOVE Raycon. I got my first pair of Raycon earbuds like, 4-5 years ago and they lasted until around March 2024. I honestly think they would've lasted longer if I had changed the ear mushrooms to a smaller one so they fit in my ear better (one of them fell out at work, hitting the floor and bouncing a couple times.) This is why you trust your instincts and keep those mushroom covers in a memorable place so you can use the correct ones. The earbud still worked even though it fell (and it wasn't the first time I'd accidentally knocked it out), but it just sounded a little muffled. Either way, I had gotten a pair of the Everyday earbuds and was so excited. My first Raycon earbuds, was my first "expensive" wireless earbuds (and by that I mean not just picking up a random pair from Walmart). They really are worth it. So for those of you who haven't tried out Raycon before, you should definitely head to the link in the description and use Tech's code for a pair! And if you already have a pair... have you ever thought about treating yourself to a 2nd pair? ~wiggles eyebrows~
I've been playing drums for 18 years, the double kicks and fills from ECB aren't difficult for even immediate level players, but being able to play along to a band he barely knew is super impressive.
Must have been sad for Sum41 as well that they weren't able to play. So in that context both them and EC were the obvious dream team to pull this off... Hats of to everyone who made this possible at such short notice. @Tank: sleep well, be safe and see you in the next video 🙂
I'm not a drummer so I am always amazed when they tell me they generally have 100s of songs they can play perfectly from memory. I remember telling one of my friends the story about the snarky puppy drummer who's first shown he learned by ear on the plane ride to the show. His reply was that's only impressive because it's jazz.
I was at the Melbourne leg of Good Things, the boys absolutely KILLLED it and 1000% deserve the co-headliner spot. Was bummed when Sum 41 dropped out but Deryck's health comes first, hope he's doing OK. Frank deserves a LOT of praise. Playing that set without any rehearsal with the rest of the band is wild, let alone absolutely nailing it. Keep up the good work mate 🤘
I was conveniently at the show myself (The Melbourne one), and though I was really bummed that Sum 41 didn’t get to play, I completely understood their reasoning, especially when you consider the history of poor health that Deryck has had (Pneumonia on top of that is brutal). But the announcement of Frank Zummo filling in for Electric Callboy really was a pleasant surprise, I legit couldn’t even tell until they made the announcement. Also to no surprise, Electric Callboy is a must see live, don’t skip them.
Dude I saw you in Australia! Wanted to say hi so bad but you looked super busy and didn't want to disturb you. I was the Brisbane show where Frank and the boys absolutely killed it! They should have been on the main stage from the start. I don't know if you were at their shows in 2022 at Good Things, but they were on the smaller stage then and they could barely fit the crowd in. So cool to see them and the crowd have so much fun. Electric Callboy were hands down the best band of the day
fans of both bands, the festival and musicians as a whole will 100% remember this event for all the right reasons. no one should be mad, disappointed potentially, but mad no! drummers being drummers and touring family helping family. these are the stories we wish to hear more often then blue ridge stories, or drama, this is live music!
I was supposed to go by got sick and couldn’t, but all my friends who went said Electric Callboy were the highlight of the festival. And these were all people who went primarily for other bands.
i was at the Melbourne show at the front/in the mosh. Honestly, you couldn't even tell he was filling in it or trying to read music while playing. Hats off to the man. The funniest part was when nico tried to give him props and he was already off the kit and standing on the opposite side of him haha!
Dude, I was in Melbourne and Frank absolutely killed it! By the time Tekkno Train was in the verse I knew you were in good hands. With how much I listen to EC and have been in the studio / on stage so I *did* notice the parts where Frank didn't pick up on a part or slow down, but he made it work every time and was on a more fitting beat within a couple of bars. Didn't hear about anything about David being sick until the Sleeping with Sirens set right before EC, when someone was talking about it next to me, and word spread FAST around the festival. Was very much a memorable show, 4th time seeing EC in 3 years now. Hoping for another Australian tour soon, EC boys and crew crush it every time
I was at the Melbourne good things and thought it was fantastic how he slid straight in and kept the feeling and drive of the band live. There was some half time drumming he did during the chorus of Mind-reader and I genuinely thought it added to the song. Was very good.
What a legend, filling in on such short notice is an incredible task only the best could perform. That reminds me of the time back in 98 when Travis Barker learned the complete Blink-182 set in like 2h too fill in for Scott Raynor who left the Band and later on joined the Band.
Tank, thanks for the update and story! Funnily enough, when you posted the AU Tour Wrap Photo, i did a quick face check (habitual, but ive never really thought about it before this) and had made a mental note about David being absent... But just thought he might be taking the pic Wouldnt have made a second though save for this video Hope hes doing well And fingers crossed that theres some good video and/or bts stuffs from those first few shows! I adore Davids style and would love to hear/see another masterdul take on what hes already established as that EC sound Praying for a speedy recovery!

And if you already have a pair... have you ever thought about treating yourself to a 2nd pair? ~wiggles eyebrows~
Melb show was phenomenal! Loved the touch of ‘Still Waiting’ as we all went bonkers in the best way possible. The energy was huuuge
I was at the Brisbane Good Things and the guys played such an incredible set.
I just love when people help out each other especially in situations like this. Got a bit teary-eyed here. Teamwork ❤
This is what live music is worth it. These one off events are what makes these experiences memorable. If I wanted perfection, I'd just play Spotify
I actually thought the Electric callboy show was the best show of the night. You guys put on an amazing show and I’m grateful I got to experience it
I was conveniently at the show myself (The Melbourne one), and though I was really bummed that Sum 41 didn’t get to play, I completely understood their reasoning, especially when you consider the history of poor health that Deryck has had (Pneumonia on top of that is brutal).
Saw Sum 41 live here in Austin a couple months ago, dude is an animal!
Was at that show. Can confirm it was beyond epic!!!! ❤
Awesome man 🤝
Frank's a G, hope David's feeling better
Watched some videos from the Good Things Festival in Sydney. Frank Zummo... what a mashine... crazy 🔥🔥🔥
As a drummer since 1994, I gotta say he might be my new favorite drummer over this. 👊😎
Hoping for another Australian tour soon, EC boys and crew crush it every time
That’s a crazy story. Much respect to him.
I was at the Melbourne good things and thought it was fantastic how he slid straight in and kept the feeling and drive of the band live. There was some half time drumming he did during the chorus of Mind-reader and I genuinely thought it added to the song. Was very good.
What a farking legend Frank is I missed the Brissy show had to work grrrr stoked yeah had a win....Top shit Cobba keep on killing it......
He should be invited to drumeo. 😂
I was at the Melbourne show and it was amazing as always!!
What a legend, filling in on such short notice is an incredible task only the best could perform.
That reminds me of the time back in 98 when Travis Barker learned the complete Blink-182 set in like 2h too fill in for Scott Raynor who left the Band and later on joined the Band.
Sum 41 have always seemed great all around.
Tank, thanks for the update and story!
Funnily enough, when you posted the AU Tour Wrap Photo, i did a quick face check (habitual, but ive never really thought about it before this) and had made a mental note about David being absent... But just thought he might be taking the pic
Wouldnt have made a second though save for this video
Hope hes doing well
And fingers crossed that theres some good video and/or bts stuffs from those first few shows! I adore Davids style and would love to hear/see another masterdul take on what hes already established as that EC sound
Praying for a speedy recovery!
I saw th headline for this soon after it happened and was so hoping for a video. So amazing!!
So much respect for Zummo and the crew
Hearing about poor David definitely had me going "kurwa" under my breath. Madddd props to Frank for saving the show while David recovers!
I was at the Brisbane festival and electric call boy was so sick love everyone was loving it
THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME LIVE
This is the type of video I expect from the Best Metal Content Creator of 2024
Wow, two of my favorite bands! This is super exciting
What an absolute bloody Legend
Thanks Tank, Sydney show was awesome!
Totally Amezing that he immediately said I wil do this. And that the shows where safed.
It seems you actually survived well this adventure in the savage lands of the mates! 😁
Legitimately one of the best shows I've ever seen. I was at the barrier in Melbourne.
Hope you had fun in Australia, the guys were great as always, sum 41s drummer was awesome
so awesome. Reminds me somehow of Floor from Nightwish when she had to learn their setlist in 48 hours
Wishing better health to David! You rock!
