This video is excellent, thank you so very much, Kevin! I was looking for precisely this kind of information and your advice is excellent! In case it helps others, here are the notes I took during the video: 1. Pick an easy song: one you know well and that's super easy to sing. 2. Simplify. 3. Learn the notes to the melody. 4. Knock it out: dig into the song, make sure you have all of the elements down. Practice with the recording. Be confident playing the instrument before necessarily singing. 5. Get organized (and use good resources like books or other things where the words and chords line up properly: basically something that someone has spent time on). Make sure you can see your music as you sing and play. 6. Hum over the chord progression. 7. Single strums. Break it down: you know what time it is. Bonus: use a metronome. 8. Go slow. Introduce the words to the song slowly. S-L-O-W. 9. Be willing to fail and laugh at yourself. This is a journey. Are you having fun? 10. Do it every &*#!*^ day! Smile, you're playing ukulele!
Thank you, loving the journey!! Practicing everyday,Check, Music area all set up, check. Smiling and having a good time. check. Got the best Uke Teacher. check
I’ve been playing the ukulele since Feb...I learned everything you just said the hard way! You are spot on! Thank you for confirmation...and helping others have an easier experience. 😊
I appreciate the way you break things into components. I have always used this technique for learning, but I find it is particularly helpful for the uke since it is the first musical instrument I have tried. My first song will be "Cotton Fields" but I am still working on "The Prettiest Uke Song" despite its challenge!
KEVIN!! Give us some more of the classic country songs!! Some of us (especially us gals) often play the tenor ukulele with a low G tuning because it's easier on our small hands and arms (I'm 5ft) but it seems like no one does the classic country songs, or if they do, they're not all that good... I'd sure give a lot to have a tutorial from you on how to play "Fishin' in the Dark" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for starters. Pretty pleeeeeaassse!!?
