    I've rarely seen this type of boxing exercise so I may be wrong when I say; your hands are supposed to be up by your chin, punch, then retract the punch back to your chin

      That's only if you're a beginner. Its what they teach you in fundamentals to always keep your hands up.
      There's many different ways to block/evade punches tho. Having hands drop allows more freedom of movement and more unpredictability :)
