Mobile Pixels Trio Max (x2) Review with a Windows and a Mac Laptop

- This is an amateur review of using 2 Trio Max screens from Mobile Pixels with a smaller screened Windows laptop that has USB-C ports and an 2013 15" Macbook Pro that has USB-A ports. I demonstrate using the kickstand for the screen to be stand alone and also how to use the screen vertically.
I did not show on video but these screens were plug and play on my Samsung Chrome book Pro with no drivers needed to be installed.
There weren't a lot of video reviews at the time so I wanted to make one and tried to answer a lot of the questions I had before purchasing.

This cleared my queries on whether i need to install drivers with a usb c connection! Thank you so much..Needed to know this as i'm buying this for my work laptop and I cant install any external drivers or software on them.

12 metal discs come with each screen so that you can place them on 3 different laptops if needed. You can also detach them but I don't think the adhesive will be as strong anymore so ones that have already been used may not be best to be reused.

Really cool! Would be nice if there is a package that connects 2 extension screens + connection to laptop with just one cable to avoid wire clutter. But that could be asking too much :P

I already use 2 monitors with my laptop, but my laptop have 1 hdmi and I connect second monitor to USB A 3.0 but it works much slower then main monitor and monitor with hdmi.
Do you have same problems with MP Trio Max?
Hello! When I tested the screens with my MacBook Pro and the USB A connections on it, I did notice one of the monitors seemed a little slower and laggier than the second one. I thought maybe it was because I had rotated that particular screen 180 degrees but I am not sure and I did not continue to test since I mainly use these screens with the windows laptop for work. The second screen though I did not notice being any slower.
Thanks for the nice review, Lynette. It would be nice for my music production set up when I travel around. BTW, it seems those two screens need to be supported by the bottom brocket. Can I put all of these on a laptop stand which doesn't have much space on the bottom backside?
Thank you! Having both screens on the back of the laptop is really heavy so it does require some kind of surface in the back to lean on or the screens will slide down from the metal plates, so if there is no space at all in the back of the laptop stand to stop the screens from sliding down, I don't think they will be usable.

@@scentline It rests on the table to protect your laptop hinge. Too much added weight could wear out the laptop prematurely. I do wish they'd add some kind of attachable lip or other reinforcement though so all the weight wasn't on the lid
Thanks for the review. Are the magnets strong enough to hold both the screen while moving around ? Or does it always had to be sitting on the table ? With myself I really would like more mobility.
No, the magnets are not strong enough to hold the weight of the screens without a base underneath like a table. They will start sliding down unfortunately!

The whole appeal of this product to me (as opposed to just getting 2 separate portable displays that only need a single USB type c for power & video that id just put on a table alongside my laptop wherever I go) is that now I can have a 3 monitor setup in the car, subway, while walking, on the couch, randomly on the street. please lmk and thanks for the review!
Hi @@rajasnagpurkar , unfortunately you are correct! The whole set up is too heavy and the magnets not strong enough to hold it up so if you decided to get up and start walking with it, the screens would start to slide off the metal plates if you didn't physically hold them on!
the 12.5" are for 14" laptop? or the 14" mount also on a 14" laptop?

Does it add significant weight to the laptop/make it uncomfortable on your lap for extended periods of work?
They are heavy, and I don't think it would be comfortable on my lap since the screens would most likely be sliding around if you move. The magnets aren't strong enough to hold the screens in place by themselves, which is why it is recommended you set them on a flat sturdy surface.
I might get this for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 for my laptop. Its expensive though

Yes it is a bigger investment! I really like them for my new work from home situation and am happy to have them though!
You mention that your Mac is using the USB-A connections, because USB-C ports are not available. I have an older HP laptop that does not have USB-C ports. However, it does have two USB 3.0 ports which happen to be the USB-A form factor. I have seen some information on Mobile Pixels' website about USB 3.1, but nothing about USB 3.0.
Can you share the type or the generation of your USB-A ports on the Mac? I cannot afford to buy the product at the moment, but it would be handy to know that you got it to work with "older" hardware which might be similar to what I am currently using.

My Mac is a late 2013 model so older as well and from looking at the specs on it, it is also USB 3.0 👍

Quick question thou, the trio max 14" support " pass through charging" ?!! And how big (Physically...) is your window laptop? Because my work laptop is the Lenovo x270 with 12'5 inch screen....but I'm hoping the trio max would fit at the back!!
Yes it supports pass through charging that's how I was able to still charge my laptop with only 2 usb c ports! 🙂 My windows laptop has a 13.3 inch screen and was too small so I don't think the Trio Max would fit in the back of your 12.5 inch screen laptop but I know they sell smaller screens, the regular Trio, if that's important to you!

Hello! Thank you for the video. I have a Dell G7, 2021 fairly modern gaming laptop. It does only have one USB C and the rest are USB 3.0. However, no matter what drivers I can find, the second moneitor always blinks black and white (the one not connected to the USB-C). Any idea on what I can try? I have poured 6+ hours into and am about to give up
Did they come with the kick stand or did you have to order it separately? I didn't see that it came with it but I also didn't see a way to buy the kick stand separately on the website or Amazon. Thanks for any insight!
I ordered the Trio Max on kickstarter so the kickstand came as a perk separately. I did see the kickstand on Amazon but marketed towards their other model, Duex, but it works for both!
@@LynetteBarrerapink thanks for the info! There were things I liked about the new models but it looks like you can't hook up two of the monitors like you can with this trio max. Do you know on their new models if you can do that?
Hi! I was just wondering if having the two screens attached weighs heavy on the MacBook hinge whilst the MacBook is not placed on a flat table? As I normally use my laptop on a stand placed on top of my table or on my lap whilst sitting on a chair. Also, do you know if the magnets will affect the MacBook in anyway further down the line? As I wasn't sure of how safe it is to use strong magnets behind the MacBook display xx
Hello! The magnets behind the screens aren't very strong, so they actually slide down if there is no flat surface to stop them like a table, so if you use a stand with not support behind to catch the screens from sliding down, the screens won't stay put unfortunately.

Hi Alexander, I've been using it with my windows laptop that has the usb c/thunderbolt 3 ports almost every day and haven't noticed any slow video response. I would still definitely recommend if you will have a solid surface to be working on.

It says the TRIO Max can be on 15-17.3" laptops and that the regular TRIO is suited for smaller 13-14" screens. I don't think they connect behind tablet like laptops such as the Microsoft Surface. Those require a kickstand for the screen. Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot for the video. When typing on the keyboard, do the screens stay stable without trembling? I get the idea that they could shake a little if you ferociously typing something.
No problem! The screens need a stable hard surface to rest on behind the laptop since they are heavy so they do not shake at all when typing.
@@LynetteBarrerapink so if you use these working from your bed would it work if the laptop is on your lap? Would you keep screens on 24/7?
@@nexusitgroup I don't think they would work well if working from your bed unless you have a large flat surface you can put them on like a tray or something since they are pretty heavy! Maybe with only one screen it would be better but I haven't tried. I do keep my screens on 24/7 and have had no issues so far!

Thank you! The circular metal plates are about 1 3/8" in diameter and the magnets behind the screens are about 3/4" H x 1 5/16" W 👍

They can be used vertically for MacBooks as well. Once you get to the step at 11:58 of the video, when you click on rotation of the display, instead of 180 degrees or standard, you can click on 90 or 270 and that will change it to vertical. 👌
@@LynetteBarrerapink When I do this, there is only "default for display" and "scaled" so there does not appear to be an option to rotate. Can you help?

I just got the trio, I'm using a macbook pro 2013 with macOS Catalina. The screen on the right shows fine but the one on the left side I can't seem to rotate that one. Do you know why?
Mine is a Late 2013 MacBook Pro as well so I'm not sure 🤔. So when you click on display settings like at 11:45 of the video, do the pop ups on each of the screens not come out allowing you to rotate them?

I've only seen a video comparing the Trio and SideTrak. I do not know anything about the Xebec Tri to offer an opinion comparing the 2 but hopefully someone else that sees your comment has and can answer your question!
has anyone had issues with one of the monitors where it just randomly disconnects/reconnects?

No fortunately mine doesn't! Maybe you got a faulty screen?

how fast did you get the product ?
I was a backer before the product was being manufactured so I waited a couple of months but now that they are out, I am not sure what the shipping speed is for someone who orders today. I'm guessing no more than 2 weeks if within the US though.
Does it come w the kickstands?

These screens just broke my laptop. I had to keep adjusting the brackets and I closed the laptop delicately and it still managed to break my MacBook Pro screen. I highly recommend you don’t buy this as it uses magnets and glue, which makes your computer look horrible. Not to mention I now have to pay $800 to replace the screen

I agree! They're not pretty to look at. I'm sure someone could think of a way to neaten them up but I haven't tried myself.

If you search Mobile Pixels you can access their website. I've seen them sell their products on Amazon, Indiegogo, and Touch of Modern and I'm not exactly sure where they are selling the TRIOs at the moment.

Yes! I use them both with the smaller laptop and kickstands every weekday for work and have had no issues.
Would this work on MacBook Air?
I don't see why not since it worked with my old MacBook Pro. Even better if you have a newer MacBook Air with USB C ports 👍. Since the Air line is smaller though, if you want to attach the screens to the laptop with the metal plates, I suggest the smaller Trio and not the Trio Max screens I show in the video since they would be too big.

With shipping, yes, each did come out to almost that price! It was an investment that was worth the price for me now that I'm working from home for who knows how long but you would have to decide for yourself and your situation if it is worth it. I will say I love having the extra screens to work with now! Take care!

worst screens ever i bought a trio screen and i returned it right back, its cheap made it fall off from the laptop the way its made its not good, the magnet in the back it dosnt stick to the laptop, and another thing the screen its very small, it's not worth the price , you can just buy 2 17 inch screen usb and have them on a stand side by side , its way better and more solid and it's 17'' screen and half of the price
