  • It's a good idea to replace the water pump, tensioner, and pulleys when you do the timing belt. The timing belt I used was a Mitsuboshi from this kit: amzn.to/2kySfQj
    If you can't afford to do the whole kit, or don't need to, the belt is available much cheaper by itself.

    TIP for installing new timing belt: You want a tight belt between the two cams and the crank and all the slack near the tensioner. Turn the crank ONE TOOTH COUNTER CLOCKWISE from the mark and put on the belt. Then, holding the drivers side cam, TURN THE CRANK CLOCKWISE ONE TOOTH back to the mark. Now you have a tight belt. Feed it into the tensioner and tighten.

    Thank you so much for the video. It helped us a whole lot in the replacement of our timing belt. Now I have a question. I've got a third generation 2001 4runner with a 6 cylinder. She has 218k mile on her and I just replaced the timing belt. Not easy but I got it done. I fired up the car and everything sounds smooth. I drove it about 15 to 20 minutes and the CES light came on. I went to the auto parts store to barrow the computer. The codes read are, in order on print out, P0301 (cylinder 1 Misfire), P0300 (Random Misfire), P0304 (Cylinder 4 Misfire). The car is running very smoothly and no physical detection of a misfire. I removed battery lead and reconnected, code cleared, then reappeared after about 15 minutes of driving. I checked wiring harnesses and general wiring for poor connections or poor ground. All checked out. I disconnected the battery again to clear the code, went for another drive and and CSE went back on after about 15 minutes drive time, I stopped the car to get my mail out of the box (the car is still running very smooth while I'm getting the mail) I got back in and put it in drive and the CES light went off????? I have nor driven it again since the light went off and I parked the car but I'm going to assume it will go on again. I will drive again to confirm. Can you direct me to a resource that may be able to help answer to this elusive issue?

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  5 лет назад +1

      It is possible that the timing belt is a tooth off? Of course there are other possibilities, but the computer uses the crank, cam signal to detect misfires. If it wasn't doing it before, then I might suspect that.

    I am currently doing this to my 90 4Runner. My big problem is stuck bolts. I have never worked on a job with so many stubborn bolts. I now use penetrating oil and hit them with a hammer before I even try turning a bolt. Even so, I have had to torch off two bolts.
    Unfortunately, I have two 5 inch long lag bolts holding the fan bracket in place that resist all my efforts. Because they are lag bolts the threads are far away from the head. They are buried deep in the block. So penetrating oil and torching has no effect. I have rounded the bolt head using a very long extension trying to muscle them off. If I cannot remove the fan bracket I can't get to the timing belt and water pump so this is a real show stopper. I am out of ideas. Any suggestions?
    I have the same problem with the mounting bolt holding the power steering pump.
    EDIT : after trying numerous methods I broke down and went to Harbor Freight and bought a 3/8 drive air impact wrench. Hooray! Took those bolts right off! Boy, was that good to see.
    NOTE: I filed down the bolt heads some so they weren't so rounded before using the impact wrench.

    when you remove the crankshaft bolt, how do you do so without moving the timing marks? Or does that even matter. I really appreciate this video!! helped me more than you believe

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  7 лет назад +2

      TheRegent187 It doesn't matter much, as long as the belt doesn't jump time. if you're using an impact, it doesn't move that much anyway. the belts that are pre-marked make the timing marks on the engine almost irrelevant

I am currently tackling this job solely with the help from this video and some old threads on a forum. all because my water pump went out. zero experience, but this is a great start! You made it look so easy. Where do you live? Arizona?.. Couldn't budge 2 of the fan nuts, so being a manual trans. I opted to remove the radiator and took the fan bracket out with the fan attached (easy). Also being a manual trans. I just put the car in gear and had a friend stand on the brake and removed the crank bolt rather easily. The harmonic balancer would not budge. I spritzed a few drops of PB on it just for fun and tried it again to no avail so drove a few blocks and bought a Puller ($15.00) from napa, and before I could get it set up the balance just slid off. Go figure.. I should have waited a few minutes after spraying with PB and I could have saved a trip to Napa. Lol... My job didn't go as easy as yours seemed to go cause someone was here before and buggered up some of the bolts to the point that they were almost round so I had to work extra hard to remove them. Thanks for the great video...

    Thanks and your Video is Great !

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  6 лет назад +1

      Not much really. I guess at most you could line up all he timing marks, mark the belt on the 2 cams and crank, then clamp the belt to both cams. Then pull the belt, just off the other pulleys. This would just make a little easier and faster getting it back together. You will still need to remove the tensioner if it's hydraulic, in order to press the plunger back in. At least that's the right way to do it. So to sum it up, there unfortunately aren't too many steps you can save, since the timing belt drives the water pump

    Hey James! Great video! I don`t have a impact so I try with the long bar and give start to the engine, but my engine won`t rotate! What could it be?

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  7 лет назад +1

      what do you mean it won't rotate? If you're turning the key to start the engine it should act like it's going to start. Did you disconnect the battery?

    • @antoniobrun1565
      @antoniobrun1565 7 лет назад +2

      Hi James! Thanks for your prompt answer! I`m new in this so as I told you before I turn the key and the crankshaft and won`t rotate. I spin the cranshaft I think 360 or something like it and it work! But the Breaker Bar 3/8" drive x 20" inch long just couldn`t hold the torque and the head snap! Since the bar had warranty I just replace it and try it again, but snap again. So I decide to go for a 1/2" inch and the bolt finally got loose! What could be the reason for the crankshaft didn`t rotate ? I keep working I realize that in your video you didn`t show hoy to change the water pump, but is not a big deal! So thank you for everything!

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  7 лет назад

      If the engine is not turning over with the key, it sounds like you have a starting system problem. This you would have surely noticed before doing the timing belt right? The engine not turning over? I'm just trying to understand if that's what you are saying.

    • @antoniobrun1565
      @antoniobrun1565 7 лет назад +1

      Hi James! I bought the truck 4 weeks ago and so far I did not have any starting problem, I really don`t know what happen! Probably is a problem with the starting system, time will tell! Anyways I have a question for you, I was able to put all parts together but I realize that you adjust the bolt of the crankshaft with the impact. The problem is that I don`t have an impact, I adjusted it as much as I could with one wrench on the crankshaft bolt and the other in one of the bolt of the cam gear, do you think that this would be enough? Should I invert the process for getting loose the bolt from the crankshaft with the bar or I should just go to a mechanic and ask for the impact to tight the bolt? Thank you very much for your answer! The video is great!

    Hi, I need help! Question about my drive belts. I used this video to help replace my drive belts. My alternator belt snapped. Big time squealing noise right before it snapped. I did start the engine with just the A/C & power steering belts. Still had that squealing noise. I also found a circular, beveled aluminum piece, 1" in diameter when the alternator belt broke. I'm not sure what that is? I put brand new Gates belts on. All the belts feel properly tensioned based on the ruler test. However, the squealing noise is still there when starting engine. Is it the alternator? Does that aluminum piece have anything to do with it? Thanks for any help.

    Hey james. I had a question that maybe you would know the answer. Do you know which trucks comes with a water pump oil cooler and which don't ? Because i see they are selling water pumps with and without... I'm pretty sure mine as one. 93 pickup 4x4 stick shift.. thanks man

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  7 лет назад +1

      No, I thought thought all the 3.0s had oil coolers. You know what it looks like right? It is the big round thing with a 24mm bolt in the middle of it, close to the oil filter. It has 2 coolant hoses coming from it.

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  7 лет назад +1

      I only see one listed for 1993 3.0. Oreilly"s CP9291, but if you check Aisin WPT-030 or WPT-032....It looks like one may have a water outlet pipe on the thermostat housing part of the water pump, and one may not. So I guess look down at the thermostat, and see if it has a hose coming off of it. The water pump is covered by the timing cover, except for the thermostat part of it, it's just to the right of the timing cover, by the lower radiator hose. Hope that helps.

    • @alextennis24
      @alextennis24 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks a lot James. Im pretty sure mine as an oil cooler,, but i will double check. Do you think it's possible to install a water pump with an oil cooler even if your old water pump does not have it ?
      By the way,, i was thinking of installing the same kit as you the Aisin TKT014. Any preferences why you're using that brand ? I know it's a direct replacement for toyota part,, but i'd still like your take on it if you don't mind..
      thanks

    • @AppalachianDIY
      @AppalachianDIY  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, the water pump itself should be the same, but with the addition of the small outlet for the heater hose. You would need to plug that outlet though so the coolant wouldn't leak out. Obviously you would try to avoid that route if possible. As far as the Aisin kit goes, I always use those for Honda and Toyota if they are available because they OEM replacements, not cheap parts that Autozone sells. I have seen the most reliability from them. Also the belts seems of higher quality and they are usually marked with the timing mark lines, like the belt I used in this video. It makes installation quicker. In the video I showed lining up the timing marks and the lines of the video just for demonstration purposes. But once you have done this before, you realize that you can almost just use the lines on the belt with the marks on the gears. It makes it quicker, easier, and basically fool proof...all good things.

    • @alextennis24
      @alextennis24 7 лет назад

      Thanks a lot james. Would you know why they call it oil cooler instead of the heater hose outlet?

    Just an FYI, breaking your crankshaft pulley bolt loose with your starter is a BAD idea. You are running the chance of breaking teeth on your flywheel and breaking your starter... I found that out the hard way.

    Working on a Northstar water pump, my wife has a 2nd gen 4runner and it has a knock sensor code, hurray!!!! Cuz guess what? Most of the shit that you removed has to come off anyways to get to the intake manifold

    I'm changing water pump now... Was just trying to make sure I didn't fuck up considering timing chain is integrated with it
    Edit... Looks like the water pump just got a whole lot more complicated...

      yeah, the timing belt needs to come off. A water pump job is also a timing belt job
