  • This question took me here and a meeting with Caleb Roth of Stain & Seal Experts. It Convinced me of my belief that deck and fence wood should be treated with oil. Never paint with any water-based product. Maintenance is much more difficult and costly when you use a water based paint product.

Great Video. Now that you have me convinced to go with oil-based, can you recommend an oil-based product that has deep penetration or maybe what was being used in the video?

I agree oil is better. How do I know? Treated my deck when I lived in Michigan with olympic oil based stain and It lasted great! Then we moved to Indiana and put it on a cedar fence we had installed and wondered why it wasn't lasting and seemed to kind of looked like paint when it's old and pealed. We hadn't realized that they had outlawed oil based products in Indiana so the stuff wasn't the same. Getting a new fence now and not sure what to use, arrgh

So can you recommend a specific product? The video starts with a professional stating he had issues with a product for over 20 applications that he had to redo --- making sure we don't use that specific product would be helpful. This video is very frustrating without specific information. Great, waste of 6 minutes

Water based is perfectly fine. Oil is just nasty to work with no benefits when your prep is correct.
