  • In this video I take a look at the cheap CH341A eeprom programmer. I show practical uses of it on GM instrument clusters. We also take a look at a commonly done modification to the programmer. The CH341a USB flash programmer can also be used to read or write a motherboard BIOS or any other EEprom supported by the software.

    Impressive you were actually able to read/write to the chip. With the display in the way and on the board I never had any luck. I always remove the chips and use the adapter instead. I also don't like bending the pins on the VFD to get the clips on. Good content!

    You are absolutely correct, to operate this in 5v mode all you do is fit a jumper across the 3.3v and 5v rails on the pin header, effectively bypassing the 3.3v regulator completely. No need to lift any legs , cut tracks or solder anything.

    • @FixedUntilBroken
      @FixedUntilBroken  3 года назад +1

      Yeah when another technician pointed me to his video when saying I should test out that programmer I was confused why he did that before even getting my hands on it. I the. Guessed the ch341 ran at 3.3v with 5v tolerant GPIO but once I got it I knew that wasn't the case. I then also realized my logic in thinking wad faulty since he lifted the 3.3v pin. (While leaving the other 3.3v pin on the board). Idk if that top pin is actually populated on the board or just a blank pad though

    • @stevepollitt
      @stevepollitt 3 года назад +1

      @@FixedUntilBroken You are correct the large pad is still connected to the 3.3v rail so lifting the leg will make absolutely no difference. I've confirmed continuity with a DMM, also with the leg lifted there is still 3.3v on the pad.

      @@FixedUntilBroken
      The ch341a programmer is designed to work at 5V.
      Switching to 3.3V has a flaw: 2 jumpers are needed to do it right not only 1.
      In datasheet of ch341 is specified that output signals levels are at Vcc-0.5V.
      On the other hand, those signals levels defines how inputs / outputs are translated to 0, 1 and undefined binary states. Usually (Vcc / 2 )-/+ 0.5V means undefined state.
      Programming a 3.3v IC with 5v might fail because programmer might send on ouput a 2V-1.5 V signal (0 state) and the 3.3V IC might interpret that like 1 binary state or undefined binary state.
      Only because it's works doesn't mean that is right way to do it.

    • @FixedUntilBroken
      @FixedUntilBroken  3 года назад +2

      @@contacttly6398 I think you are missing what we are doing here. We are working with automotive ICs that are 5 volts and need the tool to work at 5volts. From the box it's set up for 3.3v . I have no need for the ch341 to work at 3.3v. I need 5 volt. Btw if you expect no errors out of $5 I suggest lower expectations or a larger budget.
      I do a appreciate the information we just aren't using at 3.3v
      This board actually has a bigger issue. It really doesn't have anything to stop you from frying the ch341a. I was testing a hand held soic8 pogo pin and slipped with it and the magic smoke came out of my ch341a.

    • @otofoto
      @otofoto 2 года назад

      Interesting that when used 5V jumper it was very hard to read automotive chip in place but switching back to 3V an it reads everytime. So not always 5V is better.

    In the video you are referring to, he is doing the 5v mod because there is a flaw on the CH341 that he has. I had to watch it a couple times to catch what he is saying. Start at 5:35 and he shows that he does not have 5v on pin 1, which he says you need for automotive work. On my CH341, the 5v pin is connected to pin 1, so if I use the jumper, I get 5v on the pin 1.

    Hey, just came across this while watching DrShock's video. I'm looking to program a 93XXX chip that needs 5V apparently, you mention that I can just add a jumper but in the video at one point you said add a jumper between the 3v a d 5V to give it 3V. So is it 5V with the jumper inserted or not inserted ?

    • @FixedUntilBroken
      @FixedUntilBroken  2 года назад +1

      If you Jumper 5v with 3.3v you get 5v. if the jumper is off you get 3.3v at the power pin. Not to confuse you or anything but the data pins are always at 5v due to poor design of this board. its only the supply voltage pin that changes.

I don't want the cheapest chip programmer/reader, when I look at Amazon I see all kinds of listings for what appear to be the exact same kinds of programmers under all kinds of different names. I’m trying to read a chip that looks like a 93c66w. Actually there is two numbers on it: that one and in the second line it is written 9533w if I’m seen right. So while trying to read it with asprogrammer I have a “check settings” error message while trying to read it as 93c66. I read somewhere that you can read them as a 24xxx or 25xxx chip. What can I possible do?

    On the back of the programmer where you can solder chips on for programming if you look close enough there is a diagram of the chip printed on the board. The outer one doesn't really say which is pin 1 but the diagram shows you the direction of the chip and if you look at the pads one is different than the rest, safe to assume that one is pin 1. As for the inner one pin one has a circle next to it.

      Yeah but the main problem is one is going to be the pin out for spi other is I2c. Doesn't say which is which. Just lazy imo to not mark it in the silk screen but yes it would work. I coated mine in conformal coating though because I'm never going to use it.

    Awesome video.
    So, there may be no need disconnecting the 3.3V .
    If for any reason you don't want 3.3V at all, it would be best to raise the regulator input leg (5V input); which is the pin closest to R1 as seen at 21:40. If the regulator has no input, then it cannot give output.

      On second thought, it's not advisable to bridge the input and output of a regulator and power it up. This could damage it and cause short circuit to your board resulting in reading errors.
      You could install a switch to enable you select 3.3V or 5V, depending on the IC you want to program.
      You could also raise/disconnect the input pin of the regulator as I stated above.

    Dear Bro, you are forgetting that you don't need to pull out EEPROM with clip. It's big plus.

      It's also a piece of shit that burnt up because it has no over current protection. And no I didn't forget that I mentioned it a few times

      I don't do tv repairs. I actually hate working on tvs myself. Indo automotive electronics. Probably best to find a forum that people do that kind of work on.

    so your saying all i had to do is use breadboard jumpers on the yellow rail part instead of soldering wires and just use the jumper it came with for 5v wth lol so much easier

      It is fun to do haha. I really need to do a follow-up video on this product. It failed out of the blue and almost burnt up my USB port

    No mod needed for 5v, it's for 3.3v (most used in non-automotive chips). The USB outputs only 5v from factory and has to be modified to obtain 3.3v .

      Incorrect it is not used at 3.3v in these clusters. yes the ST95020WP is capable of being run at 3.3V but no the 03/04 GM clusters run it at 5V and there is other stuff on that line that runs at 5v. instead of putting a load on that 3.3v regulator I would highly recommend running it at 5v like it is run in the cluster. And no No mod is needed for 3.3V IT HAS A 3.3V REGULATOR ON IT.

      this video is about using it in 5v application not 3.3v the point is to show you don't have to cut up the board to use in 5v application. It has nothing to do with 3.3v.
      On top of that I need to do a second video on this thing because it's a piece of crap. It let out the magic smoke the first time I miss clipped it. It really needs some level is protection on the data lines plus when the ch341 let's out the magic smoke it wants to take your whole USB port out.

      @@user-ic8qh9ot8j I do appreciate you pointing that out though. I was aware it was at 5 volts I show that the ch341 is only getting 5v in the video I didn't really think about that when he was saying that I thought he was saying the 3.3v regulator doesn't exist lol. Point is ch341 is crap spend the extra money get a good eeprom reader. Sometimes being cheap doesn't pay off
