      Thanks for this, Nemo! Funny thing is the Global God Divide study uncouples religion from spirituality - and only uses spirituality as a measure. Plus nowhere does it give evidence of Wilcox's horrible, over-the-top conclusions. Wilcox is holding up a receipt for a Timex pretending he bought a Rolex.

      Just for the sake of correctness, there WERE Mormons on board the Titanic, and at least one pair of missionaries died in the tragedy. It was an intersectional tragedy.

      That's what they say, but not what they do. This is the theory. In practice, they tell you to stay away from "apostates", even tell their children not to hang out with children of members who are questioning teachings, history or decisions. They teach to look for the "lost sheep", but as soon a sheep is getting "lost" they turn away, don't want to find it, because the lost sheep could be causing trouble in their mind. That's the sad truth. They try to silence them and in some cases they just get excommunicated.

      RusselMNelson's (fake) story, in his own words, states that his plane was going down in flames and he sat in peace knowing his soul wad saved. He said the lady next to him was screaming hysterically. So BW's claim that Believers are the first to reach out when the "train is going off the rails" is proven wrong by the (so called) prophet himself🤣

      ⁠@@spencersessions Have you watched his talk when he tells the plane story? I thought that he was very, very smug when he talked about her. I know he is the prophet, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t judge people from time to time. Like the “lazy learners” comment - I felt that was name calling and grossly unfair. I’m sure he has said many good things, but it’s hard for me to give him a free pass when he is a prophet. A mere man yes, but as a prophet he is judged by a different standard.

      What is the purpose of empathy if there is nothing after this life? A short-term burst of dopamine perhaps? Might as well scroll on and get your fix rather than respond since empathy isn't rooted in eternal meaning.

      Maybe for you it has to be rooted in eternal meaning. Maybe for others they choose a moral way because they don’t want to harm others. If the only thing keeping you from doing terrible things is your religion, that says more about you than the non believers.

      Tapping into our eternal nature being brothers and sisters creates an innate desire to help. As we grow we can choose to be selfish.
      Naturally most 2 year-olds want to
      help another in a time of need. It's innate being children of God.
      What should be conveyed (if Nemo decided to include it) is the true message Brad was intending to convey - but he'd rather make a buck presenting church leaders in a negative light.

      @@spencersessions I hear where you’re coming from. And I’m not demonizing him. Brad is particularly fond of taking otherwise good Christian ideas and warping them to their extreme. Being other-oriented is the underlying principle, which is good. But saving yourself in crisis is NOT selfish. Just as helping others at the expense of your own safety is not virtuous. His particular hermeneutic of “faith” is really prominent amongst the leadership and it’s damaging.

That isn't selfish and I'm sure you'd agree. Having said that Christ invites us to lose ourselves in the service of others. It's a fine line to balance that God has asked of us.
      Yes, religion doesn't have a monopoly on goodness. But goodness stems from something that is beyond earthly.

    I remember when I was in YW back in the day, we were told that it was better for us to die in a rape attack then to lose our virtue. Here Brad seems to be saying again that it is selfish to have the natural instinct to survive. No-one knows how they are going to react in an extreme situation so I'd like to know about these studies BW is summing up.

    Wow! I would demand to see evidence of that outragious claim. Having been in a plane that needed to make an emergency landing, we all stayed relatively calm. We deplaned without fuss and I felt like I was part of a lovely gang. Nobody asked about our religious beliefs.

      All faith centric people believe in doing good. This is simply a way for Nemo to find content, stir up his followers, and gain more traction.

      Completely agree@@harryfve5 . Christian's don't have a monopoly on it, but it provides an excellent foundation to build a society -- if we follow who Christ actually was. People don't know Him well enough and so this next generation deems Him as decisive. Exactly what killed Him in the first place.
      I understand you don't believe in Him, but you have faith enough to believe that we're aren't on this spinning rock for no purpose.

I’m fairly certain that all religions are made up to fit certain cultures politics and science. The Bible is a complete mess.       I equally appreciate your tone, thank you. The bible can seem like a mess because there are so many authors and points of view. Perhaps some of the text doesn't translate to English as it should - nevermind that. Most Christian religions do believe in hellfire/ damnation. LDS church believes in the personal sorrow of what could have been if we were given a chance to do something about it. If we make mistakes we can rely on the forgiver (Christ). I know it sounds odd but I believe justice keeps order - even after we die. Even though this is the case - God I know is more merciful than we can imagine.

    Religion doesn't give a person a moral compass. Religion only labels what the compass points at as "good" or "evil". Unfortunately this label system prevents some from following their conscience, the Holy Ghost, light of Christ, etc.

    I’ve owned a service business for 30 years and I’ve learned to not trust anyone who leads with their affiliation with the Mormon church. I’ve been burned many times by bishops and stake presidents. And customers who advertised their devotion to the church. I don’t believe Brad is referencing any actual studies.

    I’d think in a survival situation, our nervous systems will take over. Fight/flight/freeze is just going to happen. To call that selfish or a consequence of non-belief is odd because it’s what our bodies are designed to do: ensure our survival.

    Yes this was my first response, Show me the studies! This kind of 1980s Mormon apologetics worked when facts weren’t easily available. It doesn’t work now. He’s so completely tone deaf, it’s almost like an SNL parody of Mormonism. This is all part of the “where will you go?” narrative, right? If you leave us, you will have no moral framework for ethical decision making, virtue, kindness, it would be anarchy.

    I live in a small town in south East Idaho. Our volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance has few LDS members. We are mostly serving LDS people but I’m outside of the church now. My parents are in it and literally serve on both of these units and I think we have one guy on the fire department this Mormon.. no I’m a nonbeliever. I am one of the only non-believers of religion. Other people are other face but no we did not have a very high volunteer rate for Mormons in our community in any aspect.

    The book The Plague by Albert Camus makes a super interesting point about this!! The atheist character says basically “when someone has a problem Christians will say ‘I’ll pray for you’ and sit back for God to intervene. But atheists know nobody else is coming, so they will step up and do the work.”
    Now I’m a Christian and I hope that part about Christians isn’t true. But it did definitely give me some insight on how atheists could view Charity and still have really great works in their life. ❤

    This makes me so sick. It’s kind of how I was raised in Mormonism, I think there are similar feelings in Christianity and perhaps other religions as well. Wilcox is trying to make people feel good by belonging to a group that will help others while supposing the rest will not. I loved that he referred to the plane crashing as part of it all, thank you Mr Nelson for that “story”

    Prophet Nelson never helped the supposed scared woman .However, he did condemn her fear and not uplift her .Sounds unhelpful and selfish to me .
    Truth was the story of the spiriling plane diving to the earth was untrue .Truth was after slight turbulence the plane landed at the airport and not in a field as he lied to make it look like he was saved by a miracle .(God protection etc. )
