just got back from Acura with a quote of 2200 cdn dollars for noise on my 2010 mdx.The issue is "T belt auto tensioner, water pump and both timing belt pulleys. That the idler and tensioner pulleys"...was quoted 1850 for this. My question is, is there a different timing belt pulleys, or the idler and tensioner pulleys are what the technician meant by "both" when they put "that........". I tried asking the Acura advisor but he appears not to understand it himself. Water pump was included, they not sure it will be required but gave me the quote ahead just incase it needed when fixing. Any response will be appreciated. Thanks
TB auto tensioner is a completely different thing from what this video is on. It’s a hydraulic tensioner that puts tension on the timing belt. And idler and tensioner pulleys are different, they are located on the opposite sides of the timing belt. The price they quoted you is about right for the TB job at Acura parts and labour included (and OF COURSE you want to replace the water pump while you are in there as it is labour intense). It’s a standard Honda V6 TB job, basically. You can get the full Aisin (OEM) TB kit for about $250 CAD at Rockauto. Acura will not install non Honda parts even though Aisin is the OEM, but you can get any reputable shop do it for about 600-700 CAD with bringing this kit. And I highly recommend at least resealing your oil pump when the TB is removed. They are prone to start leaking with time (mine did, so I installed a new one).
You left some stuff out, like how to get under the suv and take apart access plastics to get to the belts and how to align the belts can you please explain, and good content as well!🤗
Thanks! Skip to 2:10 for how to get to the belt. There is no plastic to take apart to get there. You don't even need to remove the plastic engine cover. There's also a clear picture on how the belt should be positioned at 6:23. Hope this helps.
Easy enough to diagnose. Spray some water on the belt and see if the squeaking goes away. If it does, most likely just replacing the belt should fix your squeaking. If not, do both.
I changed my timing belt and I notice a noice coming form that drive belt tensioner, isn’t there a plastic piece there? I don’t remember if I had one but all I know is the tensioner makes a slight clangy noise at idle and when the ac is on. Seems exacerbated by the ac probably because the fans kick on shaking the car even more?
Yes, there is a plastic retainer ring that's holding the lower bolt, so it doesn't fall out. I don't see how that would contribute to clanging, though. You probably have a worn out spring in the tensioner or a bearing going bad.
@@AcuraAddicted I’ll have to check, if I recall I did replace the bearing on the top roller. It definitely sounds like it’s from the bottom wheel tho of that tensioner
I want to do this but I’m wondering if I need to make some marks in the belt or the pulleys? I noticed people in other videos make some marks at 90 degrees.
I have a 2009 acura mdx and after click on the link to the parts it says this part won't fit my car? I check on acura parts and is the same exact part number.
Most likely. The easiest way to diagnose is to take the belt off and start the car without it (just make sure to completely remove it from the engine bay). If you don’t hear squeaking anymore, just put on a new belt (you can use this video on how to).
Did anyone reuse the creme colored plastic "nut" that was on the other side of the 14mm bolt? It made it harder to take that bolt out from the assembly. I tried to reuse it on the replacement tensioner, and it didn't thread correctly and made it hard to actually bolt it to the engine
@acuraaddicted hi I’m new in your channel so I would like to ask you a question about the timing belt in the 2nd gen of Acura MDX. Have you changed the timing belt on your vehicle already ? If yes where did you get your timing belt kit ? I need to change mine soon. Thank you so much .
Hello. Yes, changed it twice already (105K miles in 2014 and 180K miles in 2020). The only components you should use are OEM or genuine Aisin kit (got it from Rockauto last time).
Thank you for your respond I know Aisin timing belt kit are great but if I want to go oem there are some genuine Honda timing belt kit on eBay . Have you buy any of them before or you recommend any of the them ?
I don't know what your particular case is, but with time the spring inside definitely looses tension. Also, bearings go bad, which in some cases results in damaging the housing as well.
what brand or type of tensioner did you use to access the upper pulley bolt? Did you use the tensioner from top or under the car? I can't seem to fit the tensioner I got from amazon.
Can you elaborate on your question? I'm not sure I understand. Are you asking about the new tensioner itself? If so, I used OEM. Or are you asking about the tool I used to release the tension to remove the belt? If so, I purchased a basic long handle tool from the local parts store. I list all of the tools and parts I use in my videos, you can take a look at the description for a link as well.
@@AcuraAddicted the special long handle tool I got from Harbor Freight does not have enough space to access the tensioner pulley. You answered another person stating that you did not have to remove anything to access the tensioner pulley.
Hi Bogdan - At about 30 mph, I get what I can only describe as a minor hissing/screech from the passenger side of my 2011 MDX when the car is in gear and driving down the road. It almost sounds like something is lightly touching the brake disc. I do not get the sound when I rev the car in Park or Neutral and I have examined the engine and can't see or hear anything when I have someone put the engine at higher RPM. My mechanic checked it all out and said it's not the discs or bearings -- he thinks it's the tires, which are getting old (about 6 years old) but have good tread left. The sound dissipates when I slow down to about 25 mph and goes away at about 18 mph. You have any idea what is going on? Next step is to go to another shop for another opinion but I thought I'd check with you first. Thanks.
Hi Allen. Yes, tires can definitely be a factor. Typically you want to change your tires after 5-7 years regardless of the thread. The easiest way to verify if it’s tires is to swap them (if you have directional tires, you can only swap them from front to back (left front becomes left rear, etc). If they are not directional, change them to the other side: left front becomes right rear, right front becomes left rear, so a cross pattern. Hear if the sound moved to wherever you moved the problematic tire to.

Great! I bought a used vehicle in pristine condition few weeks ago. Few months prior to my purchase, the owner took the car to the dealership and they replaced timing belt, water pump and tensioner/idler. There was no mention of drive/serpentine belt. The car has a bit over 100K miles. In one cooler morning I started the car and heard just tiny bit of squeak for couple of minutes. I thought this sounds like a belt. In warm/hot days, no squeak at all. I wonder why the drive belt wasn't replaced or techs didn't see the need?
Squeaking on cold starts that goes away as the engine warms up is one of the indicators of the belt/tensioner. The easiest way to diagnose it is sprinkle a bit of water before you cold start the car. If the squeak is gone completely, gone faster than usual or is quieter, get your belt replaced, that should solve the issue.
No. There’s no need to remove the tire. If you do, there’s going to be more space to work, but it’s totally doable with the wheel on, just turn the wheels all the way to the right.

Hi Bogdan, great video. Just to clarify, did you replace the pulley tensioner from under the car? It's a little unclear to me from the video angle. I've tried to replace mine from the top and found there to be too little space to get to the mounting bolts. Thanks!
@acuraaddicted hey master bodan how are you today ? I’m sorry for been bothering you but it’s alway good to ask the master when you don’t know something. I have a question about the timing belt replacement I have to do the timing belt very soon and I was thinking about using the aisin timing belt I was googling and I saw a lot of good reviews on it but some people say the timing belt that come in the kit are Yunk. Had you have any good experience with this kit of course if you had used it before and how good can the mitsoboshi timing belt be ? Thank you
Hi Hansell. I recently used the Aisin kit for my latest TB back in 2020. Despite what some say about the Mitsuboshi belt, respectable mechanics agree that it's good quality and even though it might not be on par with OEM, it still is more than enough to last over 100K miles or 7 years in between the changes.
Not sure, haven't checked. But the pulleys are different size, so it's possible that the bearings are different. You can buy pulleys separately (p/ns in description) if you want to try your luck and see if your issue is resolve (hopefully, your tension spring in the tensioner itself is not loose).
Got a real problem need your help broke the bottom belt on alternator the 02 mdx just broke while driving, heard i can raise engine tap out is that correct?
Hi. I have no idea what that means. Can you clarify? There is no such thing as a bottom belt on a first or second gen MDX. It’s just one drive belt that drives all of the accessories. What are you going to tap out and why do you need to raise the engine?
@@AcuraAddicted sorry needed to be clearer the alternator is held on by two bolts one at the top (where the bracket is known for breaking) and the other bolt goes into the head under the timing cover passanger side my broke that holds the botoom of the alternator on tat goes into the head, i have a pic if you hsve an email?
I see. If the bolt that goes into the block broke, you’ll need to extract it. Is it just the head of the bolt? Can you remove the alternator? You should have enough space for bolt extraction.

No, mine is not hydraulic. Neither is yours. This is the drive belt tensioner, not the timing belt tensioner. You replace your timing belt tensioner along with the timing belt.
Mdx, pilot and odyssey.
Thank you. How many miles had you put on so far ? I will get my aisin kit from rockauto not Amazon.
@@hanselldisla4643 It's only been a year, I don't really track these anymore, so not much. Good call on Rockauto, that's where I got mine.
question is the upper bearing and lower bearing the same? mine wiggles in the lower
@@AcuraAddicted bolt broke off about 1/4 bolt in th head altantor fell off not much room can't get a drill in at that angle to tap or drill out so may have to lift the engine the motor mont is right there need about an inch or so what are your thoghts on lifting it a few inches and a good extractor?
thank goodness i knew how to do this job without looking it up first. bearing failed/ noisy at around 85,ooo miles on a 2005 MDX :(
My Acura rl sounds like a diesel engine, im thinking its an issue with this same part you are replacing
Could be the TB tensioner, which is much worse.
Have you found out whats the the problem, thanks
I’m finally going to tackle this project this week. Question: I was looking at my MDX today and was wondering if you removed the inside fender plastic? I assume you must have and it just wasn’t shown in the video? Thank you :)
Hi Marty. There is no need to remove any plastic. I haven’t.
Is the belt tensioner hydraulic? My 2010 Acura tax has a hydraulic tensioner and I can't find a video on it anywhere.
No, mine is not hydraulic. Neither is yours. This is the drive belt tensioner, not the timing belt tensioner. You replace your timing belt tensioner along with the timing belt.
Did the tensioner tool hold up for you or break? I see many negative reviews on Amazon about the tool twisting after the first use.
I've had this tool since about 2012 and never had an issue with it. Not sure what Amazon sells, but I got mine at CT.
Thank you!
Great MDX videos. Thanks!!!
You're welcome!
very clear good jab thanks for the vidio
Thank you!
Hey why does the drive belt tensioner cost way less than the serpent belt, it's significantly a big difference in price for my 06 MDX?
I'm not sure what you mean. The tensioner assembly for the 2006 MDX is around USD $200. The serpentine belt is only $40.
Okay I guess I saw something wrong with what I saw then...
@@gioldycarrasco Where were you looking for parts?
Well I just Google how to replace or rebuild power steering pump cause I was hearing some noises and saw that i had some leakage somewhere and I figured it was the pump and so I did manage to take it out and rebuilt it and now the steering on it is hard to turn and they're telling me that I might have to change it now. ...
Junk yards cause I know brand new parts are a little expensive. ..
you are amazing Bogdan.
Thank you!
Хорошая работа.👍
Спасибо!
Nice Video!!😎
Thanks!
Bravo!
Going to try this on my mdx, it got 138k. It make little noise when fans kick on.
Ну, как всегда - круто!
Спасибо!
Thanks!!!

You are welcome!
I think this my problem squeaking top pulley tight steering how much for a belt and pulley job
No idea, sorry. Why don’t you ask your loal mechanic directly?
It looks amazing.
DashLashBoy hee haw
Wey need more videos
Working on it
I have a crush on Bogdan 😍
Saved $1,300.00 😹 the dealer almost got me !!!
Noooo! $1300? How?
That's what all dealership are trying to charge for a timing belt job and belts and rolls and new crank seal I bought the parts myself got a certify acura mechanic to do it for 450 just dont want to mess it up or would do myself 90k now many more miles and joy to come
1300 for a timing belt job at the dealer is pretty good for an Audi. This is what Acura charges. But here we are only talking about serpwntine belt and the tensioner.
👌 👌 👌

I have a question please I just got mine replaced it was quite when I left the shop but now it making more noise .. when I put water on my belt the noise stop would this be miss a line or a bad belt
Likely a bad belt? Did they replace the belt? If not, replace it. If they did, make sure it was the correct one. May be they put aftermarket one which is too tight?
@@AcuraAddicted no
I got it in the shop now they said it because I put 303 condition on it I said lot off people use it so we see the going to put a new belt on thanks for your information
Saved $1,300.00 😹 the dealer almost got me !!!
if you needed the timing belt done, then that's way more involved than the accessory serpentine drive belt & tensioner
