Rock music was always controversial and got a lot of flack from more right wing conservative people. Especially in the 1950s. However the push back from the right lessened in the 60s and 70s. When the 80s came a new thing came out Mtv that played music videos 24-7. This never existed before. Also in the 80s cable tv came out and now tv programs could be aired nation wide and world wide. The new exposure of mtv and cable television caused more outrage from the right wing people who created something called the PMRC who wanted to censor music. They are the reason music albums have warning labels on them. The pushback from the right brought out more of the rebellious spirit in heavy metal (A style of music that always tried to push the envelope) and many artist felt like it was a war of their freedom of speech against the establishment at that time.
