- In 1995 at Deer Creek Venue in Indiana, 1,000 fans crashed the gate during the Dead resulting in a cancellation of their second set. Here, Keller Williams expresses himself about the situation.

I played this for my lady years ago and she said she worked the parking lot for the show. I didn't even know what the backstory was, i am not from Indiana. I just thought it was a cool song!
I was there enjoying the clouds in and out of a kaleidoscope when I was tear gassed. But I loved the show I cried that summer to think we'll never see him again.

I wasn't at the last (GD)DeerCreek show..But, I was at the DEBUT of "GateCrashers" in Indianapolis!!! he said he just wrote it..the cool part is how the song has never changed. He's never added lyrics or anything, Almost all live songs change over the years.(not this) it's perfect just the way it is!!

I'm not exactly sure, but might be able to narrow it down for you a bit...
This particular recording is from the album "Stage" which is a compilation of recordings from Keller's 2003 tour. Gate Crashers Suck is featured on disc 2 of the album, "Stage Right", which includes recordings from the East coast performances at various clubs.
Holy crap. I was outside of that Dead show when the fucking SWAT showed up and started spraying all the gate crashers with mace. I second all of Keller's sentiments.
i was in Steamboat with Keller in 96-97, it was cool so see him play all the small places, he paid his dues, he used to play this cover for me every time i asked, Stagefright, it was great.
The Deer Creek festival is my favorite music festival! I saw Fish open up for the Greatful Dead there in 1982!
I hope we get this up at the Mishawaka Amphitheater coming up here on Aug 21-22. All you Colorado kids make sure you don't miss your chance to see Keller solo and with his band, the WMD'S at one of Colorado's best venues. See you in the canyon. Love me some Keller.

I'll never forgive those gatecrashing assholes for costing me a show. Years later I overheard a guy that was employed by me brag that he gatecrashed the show. He never understood why I made his life a living hell. I still love that Jerry pulled out a Dire Wolf with a death threat looming over him. "PLEEEASE DON'T MURDER ME"
I've been to hundreds of shows at Deer Creek (now called Klipsch Music Center, and previously Verizon Wireless Music Center)...it's a great venue but is no Gorge or Red Rocks...I actually was friends with the Deer Creek owners son for years...used to get free tickets to everything.

The Deer Creek gate crashing occurred on July 2nd, 1995. The show on the 3rd was cancelled. If Jerry had lived, The Grateful Dead were to never play at Deer Creek again.

I was at this show also, and it was the only one we could make. Our 74 volkswagen safari van broke down on the way there, and we were over 1/2 way there so we limped it there only to have those .........get the second show cancelled. I was very sad and when they crashed the gate it was scary....
I remember seeing Keller perform a similar song about a gate crashing at the Tweeter Center.
I remember looking back seeing boards fly with a hoard behind them, at first I thought everybody just got miracled in, then reality set in.

Since everyone is being technical about Deer Creek, it’s now, “Ruoff Mortgage Center.” Not a festival. Just a cool outdoor concert venue in Noblesville, IN. He should be kind of glad he wasn’t at that show. One moment you’re watching the show, the next moment you’re being tear gassed. Fun fun!

we drove down for the show only to have to turn around and come home. gate crashers suck. Always loved a show at Deer Creek.

The night before was my last Dead show. Got ripped off of my last Dead show by the gate crashers because we had tickets for both nights.Our party was also pushed thru a VERY small door in the Richmond coliseum in 1984 by some gate crashers pushing from behind.
This would have been my last Dead show. We sat in line for hours, only to learn there was a riot and we couldn't get in. A riot? At a Dead show? Surely not... but it was so. WTF? Thanks, assholes. On a side note, there was a rumor in the neighborhood that I had started the riot. People called me and asked me what I had done. lol That part was funny. Much love to Keller Williams.

On our way home not a word or peep about the second show.
It wasn't till 2016-17 That I heard about the incident. I couldn't believe it. All these years. I had came and went from Deer Creek with only one thought.
Nissans Pavilion is only one hour away from where I live.
And it still takes 12hr. To park and walk inside. I would have never had the gumption to race up a hill and blow it for everyone else.

@jzip71 Oh I am sorry buddy.... I thought it was beyond obvious that I was being facetious. You see, before a change was added to the video, the beggining made mention of a "Deer Creek Festival." I was just playing off that error. I can understand though if you didn't get it, it was fairly complex humor.
the real story is that
in 95 they cut deer creek (nobelsville in.) to 2 shows instead of 3, and mail order was cut to a 3rd of previous years. there had already been problems the whole run leading up to deer creek, (ninjaz o.d.N, the balcony collapse in stl, etc) the band had already started circulating a memo to fam saying "if you don't have tickets don't go to the venues". the fence came down near end of first set 1st night and "the band played on" they did the second set too, nite 2 a nadda

i was at the show in STL after that happened i was only able to make the first night however there was also the tragedy at the farm when the deck collapsed and several people were injured don't recall if anyone died but anytime you have a lot of people together like this there are bound to be injuries and even potential casualties doesnt matter who is playing or where it just happens hell people get trampled to death at walmart when they have holiday sales does that keep them from doin it

I was in the parking lot when this happened. Right on the edge of the lot and the grassy field between the venue. Everyone rushed from behind us, but we were like screw this- and just chilled. We could see everyone after they passed running up. But, I didn't even realize until the next day, what really happened. I'm really glad I didn't gatecrash. Also saw Keller at the Recher in Baltimore- he's awesome.

God that was the craziest shit ever. Happened right over my shoulder. Next day at the campground around the corner everyone is pissed at the show being canceled. Then these dudes show up and all of a sudden our campground is in the middle of an honest to God Acid Test. Made every other drug I've been on seem like tylenol. Most bizarre two days of my life.
Grateful Dead family acid is the best. Sounds like you picked the right place to park. Gotta love the good old days and every other drug is like aspirin compared to dosing LSD.

I was at that show, it did suck, lots of conterfeit tickets were being scalped, sat in the lot after being turned away after getting ripped off by a piece of crap that sold me one of them and listened from there as a bunch of idiots crashed the show...
