What is the Patterns Of Evidence Film Series?
Patterns of Evidence is a documentary film series that travels through the Bible, investigating evidence of its historical credibility, the accuracy of its transmission through the centuries, and how it impacts the modern world.
Timothy Mahoney is an award-winning investigative filmmaker, raised as a Christian, who now has the same question that many today are asking: Did the stories recorded in the Bible really happen?
In this film series, he sets off to seek answers by traveling to the locations where biblical events are said to have happened. Along the way, he interviews leading archaeologists and scholars from all over the world who argue all sides of the debate about the credibility of the Bible. The biblical stories are retold, accompanied by dramatic reenactments and special effects.
Patterns of Evidence lets the viewer draw their own conclusions as it takes them on a journey to the ancient world of the Bible. This refreshingly balanced approach is inspiring and intellectually challenging for both skeptics and believers alike, providing profound new evidence that affirms the Bible.
Thinking Man Films is the production company for the Patterns of Evidence film series and television programs. Thinking Man Media is the book publishing, curriculum development, and distribution company for Patterns of Evidence media.
-- Patterns of Evidence Films --
► "The Exodus" - Is the history found in the Bible credible? Is there any physical evidence to support the biblical story of the Exodus? An in-depth investigation by filmmaker Timothy Mahoney searches for answers to these questions amid startling new finds that match the Bible’s account of the Exodus from Egypt.
► "The Moses Controversy" - The film uncovers a new pattern of evidence that some believe link the Israelites to the world’s first alphabet. Was this a divine gift necessary for the Israelites to read the words given to Moses at Mt Sinai?
► "The Red Sea Miracle" - In this investigation Timothy Mahoney examines the journey to the crossing location, looking at two competing views of the Red Sea Miracle. The investigation raises giant questions about the real location for the crossing site and its implications on your view of God. The answers to these questions point to one of two very different realities.
► "The Red Sea Miracle II" - How could thousands of feet of water be parted at the Red Sea? Or was the sea merely parted by the act of wind in nature, through a shallow Egyptian lake? Mahoney investigates these locations to see if any have a pattern of evidence matching the Bible. This cinematic journey leads him to inquire… “Do miracles still happen today?”

Semites where people related to Shem. There were many people groups that were descended from Shem. Noah had three sons. Ham, Shem, and Japeth. So semites were closely related to many other people in the fertile crescent and near East. Abraham was a semite who lived in ur of the Chaldes, The Chaldeans, get it. Abraham's son was Isaac. Isaac's son was Jacob. Israelites came from Jacob, meaning heel catcher, or how we would say sneaky thief, what a thing to name your kid. He stole the birthright of Esau his older brother. Jacob went on to Wrestle with the Lord all night long. Then the Lord touched Jacob on his hip and crippled him and then renamed him Israel which means contends with God. Jacob or Israel went on to have 12 sons one of which was Joseph. Joseph was gifted with dream visions from a very young age

The scholar is incorrect. Semetic people were not Semetic because they spoke a Semetic language. Semetic people were descendants of Shem, the son of Noah. What language they spoke would follow, but it is not the language but the genealogy. The Egyptians and Philistines were descendant from Noah's third son, Ham.

It’s Semitic not Semetic. Yes, they are called Semitic because they were the descendants of Shem, but in historical and archaeology terms, people are assigned to “races” by their language. If you spoke a Semitic language, you were Semitic.

      Abraham comes to Canaan
      [Gen. 11,32-12,4 and Acts 7,4]
      2036 BC
      confirmation in Gal. 3,17
(from Abraham's coming to Kanaan, until the Exodus from Egypt,
count the 430 years under strange rule:
      2036 - 1606 BC)
Abraham is at this point 75 years old. God's covenant with Abraham becomes now operative.
430 years later (1606 BC) the Law is given to Israel at Mt. Sinai Gal 3,17]
      - Abraham (85 J.) marries Hagar [Genesis 16,3] 2026 BC
Between Abraham's 85th year (where he in unbelief got into the relation with Hagar - siehe Genesis 16,3), and his 99th year (Gen 17,24) are 14 years, where God didn't talk to Abraham.
      - Ismael born [Hagar & Abraham] 2025 BC Abraham is at this time 86 years of age [Gen 16,16]
      - Arpaksad dies [Gen. 11,13] 2023 BC
      - Covenant with Abraham confirmed and made precise 2012 BC namechange, circumcision, promise of Isaac [Gen. 17] (Abraham 99, Ismael [Gen. 17,25] when both circumcised)
      - Isaak born [Gen 21,5] 2011BC
      21rst Generation
      Abraham at this time 100 years;
      Sarah 90 years
      - Ismael with Hagar expulsed [Gen. 21,9-21] 2006 BC
With Ismael's expulsion Isaac as "Seed" and "Heir" accepted.
From this point count the 400 years, in which the "Seed" of Abraham is a stranger. That means, Isaac and his descendants would be sojourning in "strange land" und that his 'Seed' would be brought "into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years" [Gen. 15,13 and Acts 7,6].
      The 400 years count
      from 2006 to 1606 BC,
      i. e. from the point of time where Isaac is designated as only rightful heir, to the year, in which the exodus of Israel from Egypt occured.
Confirming of this statement in Gen. 15,13 and in Apg 7,6 (400 years)

@@napoleonruss1528 Actually, that is a very good point, which helps in the hypothesis.
Not all the Dynasties/ruling families were native Egyptian. In one dating theory, the Hyksos rulers (15th Dynasty) were ruling when Joseph and his brothers come to Egypt. The Hyksos were Semitic from the Levant region, as were Joseph and his brothers. So, you're correct and it's a good point, that they would've seen a Hyksos and not an Israelite in their eyes, much easier than if he were trying to pass as a native Egyptian (which weren't ruling at that time).
Then, when the next dynasty (native Egyptian) took over, that leading pharaoh "did not know Joseph." The 7 years of famine may've contributed to the weakening and fall of the Hyksos rule.
Fearing the possibility of Israel being Semitic sympathizers, if the Hyksos attempt to return, the new family would seek to cut down the Israelites to size.

With all due respect to the speakers. Joseph being “arrogant” is only an individualized opinion. As Proverbs 6:16-19 provides us with a list that Adonai hates (A proud heart being the first of said list). Furthermore, Genesis 39 states in more than one occasion that The LORD was with Joseph.
    Some corrections to be made:
Joseph is not given to Medianite traders by his brothers. Joseph’s brothers place him in a pit, Medianite traders were passing by, saw Joseph in the pit, picked him up and SOLD him to the Ishmeelites.

Sold by Midianites to Potiphar (E version)?
In one version of the disappearance of Joseph story, Reuben convinces his brothers not to kill him but to throw him into a pit. While the brothers sit down to eat, a group of Midianites notice him and remove him from the pit. They then bring Joseph to Egypt and sell him to Potiphar, captain of the guard:
37:36 And the [Midianites][2] sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.[3]
This version is generally identified as being part of the E text.
Sold by Ishmaelites to (Potiphar) an Egyptian Man (J Version)?
In the other version of Joseph’s disappearance, the brothers take Joseph and tear off his tunic. Seeing a band of Ishmaelites passing by, Judah convinces his brothers not to kill Joseph but to sell him to the Ishmaelites. They do so, and the Ishmaelites bring Joseph to Egypt and sell him there to Potiphar, again identified as the captain of the guard, though here he is in addition called “an Egyptian man.”
39:1 Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian man bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.
This version of the sale, and what follows, is generally identified as the J story.
    Potiphar or an Egyptian Man
As already noted by traditional exegetes, the way verse 39:1 refers to the man who purchased Joseph-“Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guards, an Egyptian man”-seems like overkill, especially following 37:36. Particularly odd is the note that he was “an Egyptian man”-would we expect anything else from an officer of Pharaoh and a captain of the guards?

Shem’s line produced the Assyrians, Chaldeans, Elamites, Arameans, Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Arabs, and Hebrews. Shem’s name is the origin of the word Semitic; Shem’s great-grandson Eber was the father of those who were eventually called “Hebrews,” including Abram and the Jews (see Genesis 10 and 11 for more on Shem’s line).
The point is that not only the Jewish people are referred to as Semites.
When a person is an anti-Semite who is he against?
When a group of people say they are the chosen people who are they?
How important should the land be today and important to whom?
The Bible says something to the effect that even the elect would be deceived if it were possible. Deceived how, and about what?

Joseph was sold to traders. Why would they pay full retail price from eager sellers for a young scrawny boy? What use does a trader have with a slave boy who when left unattended could run off from the caravan at will? A likely scenario is that the traders had basic business sense and paid wholesale price with the intent to sell at retail price in order to make a profit. They made a few bucks on a quick flip.

    • @Hermanopepe

*Why would they pay full retail price from eager sellers for a young scrawny boy?*
First of all, the amount the brothers sold him for is given, but not the price that Potiphar bought him for. It's possible that they made a profit even though they paid retail.
Some possible reasons for paying retail: They thought they could make a profit even if they did pay retail. Maybe the brothers sold him for 20 pieces because that was the going rate, _AND_ it's easy to do it that way so each one of them gets 2 pieces of silver.
Even good business men can make bad business decisions.
Lastly, even if they paid retail and were expecting to make a profit, it's possible when/if no one was going to pay them enough for a profit, they may have to decided to cut their losses, and wound up selling at cost. But, I repeat, we -do not know how much- Potiphar paid for him.

Also take into account that the Mideanite/Ishmaelite slave traders were also Joseph’s cousins. Abraham was their grandfather and great grandfather as well. Good chance they all knew each other. Abrahams funeral is even mentioned in the Bible and Ishmael and his family all came to it too. Likely those slave traders along with them. Those must’ve been some uncomfortable family reunions! Everyone preferred their own brand and probably considered Joseph to be a higher caliber slave because of his education and upbringing.

There is considerable evidence that many ancient Hebrews were much fairer than most in modernity realize. Esau and Jacob, genetic twins, were redheads: scripture describes the ruddy Esau, and the statue of the family patriarch Jacob discovered during the excavation of Joseph’s palatial compound in Egypt, depicts Jacob as fair and very redheaded. The ancient Judean Desert mosaic of King David, playing his harp & signed with his name, reveals David as every bit the fair and ruddy man of scripture: a blonde. And the oldest remains of a Hebrew male ever discovered, dated to the first century BC, are of a caucasoid male with naturally red hair.

Rohr does not understand the story at all. He mixes it all up. Jacob is no prize. He like his father Issac, had to endure seven years of indenture at 5h3 hands of his uncle, so he could marry and when the same was tried to be pulled again, he outsmarts his uncle by offering him all the pure white sheep from his flock. Only to place marks on most of them so they were not pure white. H3 then after marrying produces seven unruly boys. Of which Joseph was the youngest. The older brothers go out carousing with women in town who do not believe the way Jacob desires and several get these women pregnant Joseph on the other hand has not disobeyed Jacob and is given the coat of many colors as he followed Jacob’s rules. This of course makes Joseph’s brothers angry and when Jacob sends them to Egypt to try to buy grain, instead, they push him down the well. They then drag him out and take his coat . They then sell him as slave to the traders and bring the soiled coat back to Jacob telling him that they were robbed and Joseph is dead. Joseph is taken by the traders to Egypt, and is sold to an Egyptian official as a house servant. While Joseph is given some latitude and does well initially, his immaturity gets him into trouble and he is sent for trial.
This being a difficult time in Egypt, with weal Kings and growing power of regional governors. In custody, Joseph uses his wits and starts to interpret the dreams of other prisoners, guards, and even the warden. So as it happens, Joseph is to be brought to none other than the Pharaoh for trial. The Pharaoh, being distressed by the political situation expresses his frustration with his own dreams as he has now heard that Joseph has been interpreting such things.
By this time, Joseph has learned about the changing climate conditions with the savannahs turning to deserts. So when the Pharaoh talks of the seven fat cows and the Seven lean cows, Joseph takes it to mean that while several good years were ahead, that seven bad years were coming also. So thus is what he tells 5he Pharaoh. Since this makes sense to the Pharaoh, instead of having Joseph killed, he punishes him by making him responsible to do what he dan to either prevent or ameliorate the bad times.
In this Joseph has his big idea to increase the grain contributions from the farmers to the Pharaoh, but having the Pharaoh only use and distribute the same amount as always. Thus insuring a surplus. Having done this fie seven years, when the drought did arrive, the Pharaoh’ grain bins were almost overflowing. An$ as the populace became desperate, started to give it to the people that were beginning to starve. And by advertising that this was the response from the Pharaoh to his people, only heightened both the name of the pharaoh and his own position. Since during 5his time, Egypt had gone through several ineffectual Pharaohs and Egypt had split into the Two lands again, this assistance affected only the close by Lower Egypt. In Upper Egypt there was widespread famine and there are reports that some people became canibals, eating their own children.
There is evidence that Egypt did undergo a major climate change in the first intermediate period. Including sediments from Lake Qarun indicating that the lake dried up by about 90% and a layer of Gypsum formed from the aquatic shell life tha only reproduces in shallow pools. There is also evidence from Nile Delta sediments of pollen that indicates several droughts, including one that lasted between 5-10 years. The dating unit for this event is in the 1900’s BCE.
During the long drought, that affected not only Egypt, but the entire middle east as well, Jacob again sent his sins to Egypt to buy grain. This time they actually went and were through the bureaucratic administration were finally granted an interview with the high official. This happened when he was giving a dinner for the regional administrators. Since it had bern over seven years since the brothers had sold Joseph to the traders, they did not recognize that the high official was Joseph. Joseph however recognized his brothers and although he gave them dinner, they were not a part if the main function. That did nit preclude Joseph from taking the time to give his brothers a chance to propose their bargain. Such an audience to outsiders did not go un- noticed by the other administrators , and reports were received by the Pharaoh, regarding this activity. As in all political administrations , there is always a jockeying for a better position of influence. While Joseph had interviewed these outsiders , no deals were struck, so Joseph could not be accused of any impropriety. In Fact, Joseph was holding his brothers out to dry in their desperation to make a deal. That was his revenge.
Joseph discussed the matter with the Pharaoh and informed him these outsiders were in fact his brothers who had sold him into slavery. Since Joseph had proven his worth and merit, the Pharaoh, politically realizing what Joseph was doing, understood, and finally offered that Joseph’s family could emigrate toEgypt and the Pharaoh would give them jobs to tend his flocks as well as their own.
Throughout all this Joseph had spoken to his brothers only in Egyptian that he had learned as a servant. With the knowledge that his family could emigrate, he went back to his brothers and this time, he spoke in their semitic language. Naturally, the brothers became horrified, as they realized that this official understood everything they had spoken among themselves. With his revenge complete, Joseph finally revealed himself when he asks how his father Jacob is. Only then he is told that. After his father was told that Joseph was dead, he went insane and began acting in idd manners such as walking around naked all the time, and only taking his meals if a certain daughter had prepared them.
Heating this, Joseph tells his brothers to go back to Canaan an d bring the family to Egypt and he will help them, but they must confess the truth to Jacob. The brothers do as they were told and expected Jacob’s wrath. Instead, Jacob was overjoyed to hear that Joseph was not dead and instructed his sons to gather up the family but not to tell the uncles.
Thus began the settlement if the Hebrews in Egypt. Where they lived for 435 years, as the royal herds people. This lasted until Circa 1750 when there was an incursion by the Hyksos, a tribe from north of the levant in Circa 1750 BCE. And who due to them bringing in the light ,spoked wheel chariot, horses snd Tin / Bronze weapons, the Egyptians could not repel such superior technology, and the Hyksos set up their own king in the Nile Delta and dud not know of Joseph, so they would grant no favors or influence to the Hebrews and forced servitude upon them.

No one can know if Abraham even existed - and if so, it's no earlier than 800-1000 B.C. emigrated from Harran. If you are to believe these legends, then he came from Chaldea - but this kingdom only existed since about 700/800 B.C. and was short lived. Perhaps the Bible writers equated Babylon with Chaldea? According to the Bible, Abraham's ancestors were Hittite (Western "Indo-Aryans") on his mother's side and Arameans on his father's side - both refer to an area on the Turkish-Syrian border, today "Kurdistan".
Whether there was a longer exile in Egypt at all is also without clear evidence, if there were only a few Israelites. We can't say anything with certainty because it was only from the 7th century. B.C. there was a first ancient Hebrew written culture, the Torah scrolls from the Dead Sea are the only real evidence around 200 B.C. been written (presumably there were older sources of individual books). So for the dates in the Bible we have a Scripture gap of at least 1500 years, as far as the OT Genesis is concerned even X thousands of years without any evidence!
That's what's called mythology, at least legend - all the peoples of the world have it!

      Jacob Is Named Israel Twice
Jacob is renamed Israel in two different stories. When Jacob returns from living with Laban, he encounters an angel on the way and wrestles with him. In that story, Jacob asks for a blessing before releasing the angel, whom he had just defeated. The angel responds:
Gen 32:28 Said the other, “What is your name?” He replied, “Jacob.” 32:29 Said he, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with beings divine and human, and have prevailed.”
The new name ישראל “Israel” is a combination of the verb ש.ר.ה, “to strive with,” and a designation for God, אל. The passage uniquely describes a person successfully battling God or his messenger, a suitable folk etymology for the origin of Israel’s name.
A little later on, when Jacob arrives in Bethel, he is again named Israel: 35:9 God appeared again to Jacob on his arrival from Paddan-aram, and He blessed him. 35:10 God said to him, “You whose name is Jacob, you shall be called Jacob no more, but Israel shall be your name.” Thus He named him Israel.
The passage here is strange since it makes no reference to the previous renaming, implying that this story is either unaware of or deliberately ignoring the naming tradition preserved at the end of Genesis 32.
      Two Namings - Two Sources
Critical scholars have long argued that each of these name changes derives from different sources. The source of the second renaming, in ch. 35, is easy to identify as Priestly, since it refers to Jacob’s arrival from Paddan-aram, the name used in Priestly texts.[1]
The first renaming of Jacob, in ch. 32, after he wrestles with the angel, likely derives from the E source.[2] This is evident from the use of the word Elohim in the explanation of the name, which is the standard name for God in this source, as opposed to in J, which uses YHWH. The J source, then, does not include a renaming story.
“Your Name Shall No Longer be Jacob,” But It Is!
Both the E and P stories seem clear: Jacob is no longer going to be called Jacob, only Israel. And yet, even after these renaming episodes, the patriarch is still referred to as Jacob in E, J, and P

      @@johnycoho7830 Who Bought Joseph?
The problem of the double sale of Joseph is well-known, as is the source critical solution.[1] In this piece I wish to unravel a problem that occurs later in the story, but to do so, we must begin with the identity of the Egyptian man who bought Joseph
Sold by Midianites to Potiphar (E version)
In one version of the disappearance of Joseph story, Reuben convinces his brothers not to kill him but to throw him into a pit. While the brothers sit down to eat, a group of Midianites notice him and remove him from the pit. They then bring Joseph to Egypt and sell him to Potiphar, captain of the guard:
37:36 And the [Midianites][2] sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.[3]
This version is generally identified as being part of the E text.
Sold by Ishmaelites to (Potiphar) an Egyptian Man (J Version)
