  • The tiger reserves of India were set up in 1973 and are governed by Project Tiger, which is administrated by the National Tiger Conservation Authority. Until today, 53 protected areas have been designated tiger reserves in India. India is home to 80% of tigers in the world. In 2006, there were around 1,400 tigers which increased to close to 3,000 in 2018.
    We have a total of 53 tiger reserves in India and most of the tigers are in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. As part of the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) program, India had committed to doubling the population of tigers by 2022.
