I think another reason that I have such a hard time in January is that I get so excited for Christmas and I look forward to it for so long and then it’s over and I feel so sad that it’s over.

This year was the first time I've not gone to my toxic family on Christmas day. It's odd because I should've felt better but instead I felt this odd disconnect, which led to being depressed because my brain was expecting all the stress and toxicity but didn't get it. Family can be hard to navigate especially at the holidays. Hope you're all still fighting

As a person who has also started purposely spending holidays alone, I recommend finding new traditions like watching YOUR favorite movie that nobody else would want to see, or making YOUR favorite meal, etc. The first year is hard, but you have an opportunity to reshape the day however you want! That can be very empowering 💚💙💜

    • @jontnoneya3404
      @jontnoneya3404 11 месяцев назад +1

It can be hard at first because it's like you're in "combat mode" ready for a fight that never will come. The best thing I've found for this is to focus on what you want to do. If you have hobbies, engage in them more fully, if you like movies, pick out a number of them to watch, maybe even do some solo traveling to get you out of your routine.
I grew up in a family where holidays were everything and we were always together no matter how annoyed we were with others. First time not participating in a holiday was stressful and I felt odd. Now, years later, I FRIGGIN LOVE IT!! I can do what I want, when I want with whomever I want. No more of this "OH? You're not coming to another holiday dysfunctional dinner? Well, ok, too bad you're going to miss out!!"

I always feel depressed and anxious from October to December, because I dread the holidays and family dynamics. Then after New Year I am able to get rid of all expectations and feel like my life is more my own without guilt or pressure. Winter Solstice reminds us that from December 22nd onward, each day *literally* gets brighter. Hope everyone hangs in there 💚💙💜

I can relate to this on a low-intensity level. I don't really get depressed after the holidays, but I do kinda feel like I'm deflated once it's all said and done. It's a big month (or more) long buildup of decorating and planning and shopping and traveling into a packed intense few days of high interaction with people I love (and some I'm just ok with) that I don't see often. And then it's all just...over. It's like I was training to run a marathon and the day after my body doesn't want to do anything but veg out. And then there's the added humor of everyone being excited for the new year but knowing that the calendar changing over doesn't actually change anything. I nearly always need a day or two to just recuperate and get back in the swing of things.
I'm so familiar with this feeling I've actually developed a tradition around it. I call it my last Christmas tradition. When the holidays are over the very last thing I do in relation to them is listen to the song "Christmas" by Blues Traveler. (fortunately, it doesn't get a lot of radio play lol). It's a bit of a melancholy song about wanting to get into the spirit of the season but struggling with it and eventually appreciating it for what it was. My experience usually isn't a direct 1:1 with the lyrics, but the buildup and gradual tapering off really mirrors how I feel this time of year and is my signal that Christmas is over and I can think about something else now.

I never feel sad after the holidays are over. Quite the opposite in fact. I"m THRILLED after the holidays are over because now I can once again do what I want to do. No family expectations, no parties where I try to talk to boring people who have nothing to talk about but their work, none of this stupid pressure to "give money to some cause because it's the holidays and we'll spend 99% OR MORE of your donations on employees, sending 1% or less to those you really think you're helping" and more. Yeah I often feel like a Scrooge but honestly, the holidays are annoying to me and I can't wait for them to be OVER!

I've had the post Christmas blues since as far back as I can remember. In my family the festive season starts in October with multiple birthdays and Halloween in the same month, not to forget the weather finally starts to cool off here in the midwest and you can go outside without feeling like you're being suffocated by satan's jock strap. And in November there's more birthdays and of course Turkey day which kicks off to the Christmas season. And with all that going on there's usually a few get togethers for football games and whatnot. And then all too quickly it's over and there's months of not much of anything going on. Now I actually enjoy the winter time with the cold and the snow but there's rarely anything of note going on. And while I appreciate the spring it's really like a week maybe 2 of nice weather then it's months of hot and humid weather and before I go outside I have to slap on a ton of sunscreen and bug spray to keep from being burned to crisp and eaten alive by bugs out here in the country!

    Hi Kati!
I hope you are doing well/better.
I usually get post Christmas blues. I love the anticipation of Christmas more than the actual Christmas day. But for some reason this past Christmas season didn't really feel like Christmas. We had a decently holiday, I decorated my room for Christmas more than ever. I suppose for me, I love the Christmas lights. That may be one of my favorite things about it...so of course come January, it is all taken down and nothing else to look forward to.
To anyone reading this, remember you are a worthy and valued person.
You are worthy and deserving of love and belonging. ❤

I needed to hear this, now it all makes sense. My family members passed in 2014 & 2015 and it just feels empty. I decorate & try to reflect on the current situation in a positive light. "Let Heaven & Nature Sing", All is calm, all is bright, etc.I then visualize the good times & years we had. I've been focusing on the family & friends are now together in heaven and that would make them happy. You have to retrain your brain.

Usually I can just suck it up and wait for my annual trip home, but due to the pandemic, I haven't been home in over 3 years, and thanks to this new variant, I don't see international travel restrictions being lifted in time for me to make the trip this year either.

Taking time off during Christmas week is a trigger for this. It's a matter of not having enough things to fill my time. I spent the last 3 months prepping for winter, raking and cleaning up leaves, winterizing the house, then family gatherings at Thanksgiving, decorating, shopping, attending parties, cooking, Christmas eve/Day family events........and then suddenly nothing - it all stops. It all screeches to a halt and I'm faced with the reality of putting all the Christmas stuff away and a long winter ahead shadowed by the workload at my job.

  • @rachelle2227

This seasonal blues is not something I experience much, but for me it’s just kind of sad after Christmas, because all the Christmas lights are gone, and there is no fun holiday to look forward to anymore. Then it’s just cold, desolate winter for another three months (I live in Wisconsin, and it’s essentially still winter in March).
To somewhat combat this, my husband and I have gone to the Wisconsin Dells in February or early March, to an indoor waterpark, as something to look forward to near the end of winter. We didn’t go last year because of the pandemic, and in 2020, it was just around the surge of the pandemic, so we didn’t go then either. This year it’s still a pandemic, and our baby is due next month anyway, so we have that to look forward to.

Kati knows the lack of styling and colouring that made her feel drab during lockdown has allowed her hair to grow thicker. She has even applied blusher and a lovely red nail polish.
This lady knows she looks good hence taking the time to achieve the sleek straightness of her hair and extra attention to make up.
I don't know why I've said this considering the worthy subject matter. I guess it's because there will be complimentary comments saying "Kati, your hair looks great!" as if the lady doesn't know.
She feels happier and more content, hence the bloopers at the end, She knows her mistakes won't diminish her, she's beautiful so no one will care.
I wish you would address this subject matter in a video Kati, about how ppl who are perceived to be more physically attractive have the "halo effect" and an easier more enjoyable life than ppl who are considered to be less commercially attractive.
I feel the standards for female beauty as depicted in the media are racistx without ppl realising, white ladies are generally depicted as the love interest in films.
Also these standards are getting ever higher, girls feel they need to look like the airbrushed pictures of their favourite celebrities which means not eating enough. The statistics for eating disorders are rising for teenage boys aswell as girls.
I feel social media has contributed entirely to this as teenagex girls are expected to take perfect selfies ( with the help of filters ) and the pressure put on young women to meet an idealised stereotypical standard of "beauty " is now out of control.
The BBL (Brazilian butt lift) is now the most requested surgical procedure which is highly dangerous. Older teenagers are expected not just to be slimmer than is healthy but to somehow have a full booty and big but pert b**bs .
This body type does not exist. It even defies gravity. It is a construct created by plastic surgery that is pleasing to the male eye.
It makes me angry that other cultures of women are excluded from what is universally considered to be what is commercially beautiful. Women of all ethnicities are stunning but what are young girls of other ethnicities supposed to think of themselves when their image is conspicuous by its absence in the superficial arena of Instagram influencers?
Young girls who fit the mould are praised and those who don't aesthetically fit the required mould are bullied constantly or ignored completely. How are they meant to feel happy and secure in their own skin?
What's social media and media in general telling today's young women? What about their personality, heritage, intelligence, their dreams? I just wonder how far these toxic beauty standards will continue to get more flawless and therefore more removed from what real young women actually look like.
Why aren't young girls allowed to just be thenselves? I would really like to see all video in this the future when you have time please Kati 👍🌷 xx

Its summer right now, and I'm anxious about the winter returning. I've realised that my mental health is generally allways worse in the winter months, and while I used to enjoy cozying up by the fire, I am now dreading the thought of feeling trapped at home.
I was in Florida recently and ideally I would spend some time there every fall and every winter after Christmas ends.
I don't think anything will cure post Christmas seasonal depression, and I think everyone up north goes through it to a degree. Those old churches should have made Christmas a month later

I usually feel down on holidays because I don't have any friends, I'm single, and my family is broken beyond repair. My parents are divorced, most of my immediate family aren't nice people and some of them I haven't even met before nd they all live within a couple miles from me. Most of the time I end up spending holidays alone or just with 1 parent and my siblings. Listening to music definitely helps me forget how lonely it is when you know you used to have people to spend time with

I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm depressed after the holidays because I've been deadnamed and misgendered a lot at my families home and people were a lot like "You do you but don't expect me to change" after me coming out as non-binary. Now where I formerly was still holding it together at work where my chef has been deadnaming me as well, I now dread going back so much. And that all just makes me really sad.

My husband and I live in Germany and the rest of our family and friends are in the US so there was no pressure to get together on the holidays, which was nice. It was depressing though because my husband has multiple chronic illnesses and he felt especially bad (he hasn't been able to leave our apartment in months) so it was more like just another Saturday. Being a caregiver can be a very isolating experience.
