When we think of the best drummers in the world we tend to think of set players in bands, but I would argue DCI is up there, especially a group like the Cadets, it’s insane the discipline, accuracy, fluidity, and control, and those paradiddles holy cow!
Stretch501st as a drummer who has done both, corps style drummers are definitely not the best. Honestly the technique taught in corps style drumming is terrible due to the stiffness of the the arm and driving from the wrist. I think SCV was the last corps to utilize the moeller method. Playing on flats snares also doesn’t make sense since it causes the left wrist to sit unnaturally. At the end of the day, other than teaching, what career path can you take with only knowledge of corps style drumming?
BrandonPryorMusic true... not a lot of money there but that’s the arts for ya, very “specialist” whereas say a percussionist in an orchestra is much more well rounded. Not sure if this is for all drumming but I had a buddy that played snare in DCI and he had to quit after a few years cause he got such bad wrist pain and can’t play anymore
BrandonPryorMusic yeah, but also, there’s tons more hand control, like in the terms of rudiments and stuff. like that the technique of a lot of just kit players doesn’t allow for at certain speeds
@@brandonpryormusic It's a different technique, not a terrible one. They play that way because they have to put out of enough sound to cut through a hornline and get across a football field. I hear the criticism of flat drums a lot. All I can say is plenty of people seem to be drumming pretty exceptionally doing it the wrong way.
When you work with a group long enough you naturally come up with hand signals like that without thinking about it. Usually just little technique things that you can quickly address during a rep. I’m the same way with the high school group I work with.
