    I think the ribbon is such a personal preference thing. I have the ESV Heritage featured in this video and an ESV PSQ with the bigger, thick red ribbons. I have to say that I think I personally prefer the thinner ribbons to thicker ribbons. But I think that just shows a personal preference to what we like and maybe Crossway is just going to stick with that. Great video as always!

    The Heirloom Alpha ESV looks like an amazing Bible, and I'm sure it'd be great to have, but for my money I'd still prefer the Schuyler PSQ ESV for a portable double column premium ESV (e.g. I like the PSQ's red accents; I prefer the Schuyler PSQ Milo typeface to the Alpha Lexicon typeface).

    • @pappywinky4749
      @pappywinky4749 10 месяцев назад

      I personally struggle with lexicon because of how thin the letters are. I have great vision and still, I have a hard time focusing on the font. I use the thinline and I'm planning to switch to a different bible. Wish comfort print wasn't proprietary because its my favorite. Is the PSQ easier to read than the thinline edition?

    Thanks for the review TIm. I'd love to see Crossway move to a 32 or 36GSM paper in their Heirloom bibles (thinking 316 with the LSB and Allan with the Readers). I would sacrifice a tiny bit of thinness for a thicker paper. Crossway layouts are some of the best, but I don't care for the 28GSM paper.

    It may be roughly the same pagination as the Large Print Compact (one of which was the first Bible that I got more than two years ago -- my first Bible in decades), and seemingly the same font size . . . but it looks like the leading (space between lines) MIGHT be just slightly larger on the Alpha. If it's line-matched, that would be new as well (don't think the LPC was). I do find it interesting that the Alpha has maps, but no concordance (LPC has no maps, but DOES have a concordance).
    If you can get away w/out concordance or cross references, this would be a VERY NICE OPTION!! I'm certainly interested . . .

    I'm glad that it is not printed in China. With more and more persecution of Christians there, I find myself looking for Bibles printed in the USA or other countries. I still wish the words of Christ were in red. I'm hoping you have some insight as to why so many of the newer translations don't use that. This one says it has an 8pt font. That is too small for me as I get older I tend to look for the larger print when available. Great review and look forward to your future videos. I just watched your Bibles you don't like video and found out you are from TN. I'm in TN too, so hello neighbors! Sending Christian love and hope to you and your wife. Maranatha!

    I've been waiting for a long time for this Bible to come out, as I have long felt that the ESV Thinline Bibles are too tall and skinny (they just don't feel hearty or "Bible-y" enough in my hands), and the ESV Large Print Compact has a problem with really bad ghosting (although it is a nice size for carrying around). I've been on the search for an ESV that I can carry around in my backpack and use while I'm out and for sharing with friends, and perhaps this could be a good option. I don't understand why this Alpha edition doesn't have a concordance (it adds a lot of usefulness and barely adds any thickness to the Bible), and also why they are sticking with the glossy dedication/family and map pages(I've long had issues with these pages on my other ESV thinlines, where they tend to smudge up and get what looks like ink marks bleeding through when I write on them). I wish, also, that there was something else in terms of red accents with the chapter numbers or book titles, just to give it a more beautiful look. Finally, I wish that Crossway had a non-premium version of this size Bible that could be more affordable (honestly I am not considering the Large Print Compact because I bought several to give away and was appauled by how bad the ghosting is on them). Thanks for a great review, Tim!

    Why does Crossway hate ribbons? Even inexpensive versions of the NKJV come with two ribbon markers that are wider. Hey great video. Thanks. I’ve been looking for my perfect Bible. I’m hoping to find a BIG ESV. I keep looking online and it seems like they’re all personal size or compact. I want a big Bible with big letters and thick paper. Like a Bible for the house that’s made to last and easy to read. Has anybody come across an ESV Bible like that? You can get king James Bible’s like that, but I can’t seem to find an ESV.

    My biggest beef with Crossway's type setting is how they butcher poetic sections with all these single and half words having their own lines. Schuyler does the poetic setting far better

    • @RoastBeefSandwich

      seems rather small potatoes to me, but I acknowledge that once we get to this premium price tier it's all small differences that separate the choices.

      @@RoastBeefSandwich for me personally the type setting/text block is the most important part of a Bible. Considering that a large percentage of Scripture is in the poetic setting I think it makes a substantial difference visually. It's what has prevented me from purchasing any Crossway or Allan ESV premium bible.

    • @RoastBeefSandwich
      @RoastBeefSandwich 10 месяцев назад

      @@souldier2425 I think most style guides recommend continuing a line until the end and then breaking it when you've run out of room (as Crossway does it), not breaking the line whenever you want to create a "solid block" of text so to speak.

      I agree - I find one word widows very annoying and distracting, and there seems to be a lot of them in the poetic sections that this video shows.
      I also agree Schuyler handles single column poetry much better.

    I really like the ESV translation but it really would have been nice if the ESV translators would have put back God’s Holy Name in English, either Yahweh or Jehovah, where it belongs throughout the scriptures much like what the original American Standard or the Rotherham translators did. Peace
